Bare It All: Lori Foster
Secrets have a way of coming back. Sometimes they even haunt your waking hour making you cautious, looking over your shoulder and thinking twice before allowing others into your life. When things get out of control and the situation becomes dangerous Alice Appleton finds herself in the middle of what could have been more tragic had she not interfered. Detective Reese Bareden found himself in a tenuous situation causing the death of one suspect, the injury of another and the possible wrath of two good friends. Feeling responsible for what happened and thinking that the end result has yet to be decided, Alice helped take down a brutal human trafficker and senses with ever fiber of her being that there is much more to come. But, the police are all over Reese’s apartment and close it off leaving him in search of somewhere to stay. Enter his precious and my favorite character in the book Cash the most friendly and adorable dog. Thanks to Reese he has a home and to Alice the perfect companion and dog sitter. Locking away her past, keeping her self on permanent alert it takes more than just his physical attraction to her and hers to him for either one to open up.
If Cash were to relate this story he would probably say that these two could hardly keep away from each other. He’s s hot cop and she’s just quite unique in many respects. Their light banter, their respect for each other and their differences in their personalities definitely create a unique mix as the both have to blend with several others within this light hearted romance with a serious undertones of a mystery. Alice wants her past to remain just there in the past. She does not want anyone to know what causes her to have weapons hidden in every room, the fact that she is a great shot, is on high alert and can scan a room and sense any hint of danger. Just why she is so paranoid you might say or so aware I cannot divulge as I promised Alice I would keep her confidence for allowing me in on her secret and into her life. So, what’s my role in all of this. Maybe these two will find their way to be together and I will have one apartment to live in and get away from those two nosy neighbors of his that have their designs on him for you can guess what kind of reasons. When Reese’s apartment is being processed as a crime scene, Alice allows him to become her housemate. Great way to get to know someone and watching her, sensing something is wrong he is on a mission to not only protect her but also take down anyone that would cause her any pain. Added in we meet Rowdy and his sister Pepper who are quite colorful and unique. Logan the detective who was shot and the relationship among these friends started in an unusual way.
Each one trying to read the other and Reese and Rowdy, Pepper’s brother defensive for different reasons when it comes to Alice. Two friends, one woman and the boundary lines drawn as Reese explains to Rowdy his feelings for Alice, but their mode of protection are different. With this sting operation that went sour in his apartment, the end result putting Reese in an uncomfortable light, his goal when staying in her apartment just might be two-fold: to get to know her and to protect her but from what?
Alice’s instincts come into play when she observes an incident in parking lot. Following the car, watching the interaction between the man and the woman, she senses that something is not quite right. Following the car, using her instincts what happens will definitely surprise the reader as she saves someone’s life, puts herself in harms way but has no idea that Rowdy is following her every move. Just how would this play out with Reese and why was he following her? Drug, trafficking, kidnapping and dealers just what made her want to save this woman and what really happened to her? Why did she claim to have been kidnapped and kept for a year? What really happened to her?
With the case wrapped up the dealers and traffickers caught a “ freeload on the victims” and hopefully the end result would be the end of this cartel, Reese feels like he’s being dressed down and the cause of his friend’s injury and then link between their case, Alice and this young woman. Tattoos: What and why? Reassessing her actions, explaining the incident to Rowdy Alice reflects on what she might have done and the end result she just might be in more danger. Getting one culprit did not stop two more from freeing him when she and the girl left. Should she have called for help? Questioned him or phoned Reese or Rowdy?
Situations change, truths come out and others might be in jeopardy but what is the real story behind his neighbors and why are both women so apt to get Reese’s attention and hoping to steal him away from Alice? Why is Cash on the alert when they both appear?
When Alice finally explains her past to Reese his reaction will definitely endear you more to him and hopefully explain what really happened to her and why she decided to help this young woman. The end result of her kidnapping, the true reasons behind it might seem resolved but are all those involved gone or is she still in danger? Author Lori Foster brings to light just how far someone will go to protect others, stop drug dealers, slave traders and kidnappers and at any expense. Loyalty, trust, friendships and love come into play as Alice for the first time just might learn the true meaning of the word and what happens when she finally allows herself to let someone in.
When the truth behind what happened to her comes out and all of the players come into place we learn more about who helped her escape, how he will come into play with stopping what someone has set into motion and what part Reese will play, if any in her life. With the help of Rowdy, who has decided to take on a business venture and possibly more, Logan, Pepper and even Reese’s boss what happens to stop these people will definitely surprise the reader. Can Alice keep it together when she’s placed in danger in order to stop these drug dealers and traffickers for good? What about her relationship with Reese when he learns the truth and he meets the one person who is responsible for her freedom? An ending that will definitely keep the reader glued to the printed page and a novel that I read in less than two hours because I could not put it down. Fast paced, filled with hot scenes, great characters that you hope the author will bring back again, and one man who remains illusive that we hope will come back again in her third Love Undercover Novel titled Getting Rowdy and he sure does. What is next for Alice, Reese, Rowdy, Pepper and the rest only Lori Foster knows and I guess maybe Cash but he’s not talking. Secrets: You never know who’s listening!
