With the evidence piling up at the scene of her kidnapping, the cabin where this man held her and the hope of finding her diminishing he brings in Dr. Kendra Michaels hoping she can use her keen vision, ability to dissect a scene more closely than anyone else and her skills to find Eve. But, will it be in time.
Within this novel we once again meet Margaret our dog whisper and confidant to Jane who was injured in the last novel but discharged herself from the hospital early in order to help find Eve. But, things begin to go awry, her health is diminishing and the end result would be something other than what she expected. Just where is Eve, what are this sick man’s plans for her as we hear her thoughts running through the woods, hoping to find shelter and thinking that this man was close by. Hearing Eve’s thoughts, understanding the danger, the fear, the cold and what she was up against all alone we wonder if her next move will be her last.
Jane has been readmitted to the hospital for an infection and is being her old combative self when Margaret is enlisted to protect and help her. Enlightening her to what Kendra is about to do, hoping that he skills will save Eve, the two women will definitely be adversaries and will Jane be caught in the crossfire? As Eve is fighting for her life, Jane combating an infection we hear Kendra’s thoughts as she searches for clues within a car that had been submerged under water and hopefully will learn more about Doane and his whereabouts. With Venable watching and many others doubtful Kendra once again proves just how astute she is, what happens when things are not crystal clear and that she is more than just a force for Venable and everyone else to reckon with. As Jane finds herself up against the hot and gorgeous Seth Caleb whose thoughts about Jane are quite apparent, explicit and whose presence she claims to not want or welcome. But, when truths come out about the reason why Eve was taken, the rationale behind the kidnapper’s motive, Joe decides that it’s time to take matters into his own hands, insists that Venable tell him the location of the one person that might be able to find Eve even if he does not care or have any feelings one way or another for her. As Kendra makes her way to Doane’s house, Joe goes in another direction and Jane relies a dream that she had about Eve that might help find her location but will it. Just what does the God Cira have to do with this and what is her link to Jane? Cira’s gold left readers in suspense show why relate it now. The tension between Mark Trevor and Jane has always been palpable and her relationship with Eve her most valuable possession. Cira’s gold was the center of one of Iris Johansen’s novels, Countdown, as Kendra might have uncovered something within this submerged car that might lead back to Cira and the gold. Mark Trevor is about to reenter. He is a smuggler, con man and Jane seems to have trouble just being around him and of course Seth Caleb.
The road has become more congested as both Kendra and Margaret wind up in the same place, searching for clues and each one distrusting the other. Kendra distrusting her and thinking she might be a plant and working with Doane has to find reasons to allow her in on what she plans to do. With her astute ability to see things that others cannot and do not what Kendra find when exploring Doane’s house takes her and Margaret in a different direction. While Jane enlists Caleb’s help and then Trevor shows up, she uses her dream about Eve and what she senses might be happening to her to try and find her location. Jane is going in one direction, Kendra in another what about Joe, Venable and Zander. Will Zander risk Eve’s life in order to take out Doane?
Eve comes face to face with some harsh realties and both Kendra and Margaret go up against a killer. As Eve relates information to this person hoping to be freed, Kendra uses her keen skills and senses to get away before it’s too late. How all of this will play out remains to be seen? What about the sketches Jane made of her dream about Eve? Will they find her or will Doane finish what he started? Will Zander protect Eve? Hunting Eve! Just who will get their prey?
Author Iris Johansen takes us inside the minds of three very different killers. One a young boy whose visions and voice haunts Eve as he threatens her from his fiery grave. Another her former captor whose only goal is revenge and making her pay for what she did to Kevin. Finally, Zander what are his motives for going after Doane? As we hear the voices and innermost thoughts of each killer, we learn about their relationship to Eve. Eve is strong, she resilient but how much longer can she run? What happens when someone finds her, ties her up and then she asks for her freedom? At what price will she if ever get it?
With Jane teaming with Caleb in an unusual way to be discharged from the hospital, Trevor is livid at their closeness. But, where is Eve and what will happen if Doane gets her? Will Zander or Quinn get to him first? As Jane is released and both Kendra and Margaret seemed to have teamed up they all head for Mineral County where they hope to find will surprise the reader and what might Kendra learns on the way might shed more light on Doane and his son. Lies, betrayals, deceits, cunning behavior and enhanced senses will allow Kendra to forge ahead along with Margaret but who can be trusted and what will the end result be?
Eve becomes a victim of someone else as one harsh realization is revealed and her hope for freedom comes with a high price. As she runs, hides and hopes that Doane won’t recapture her, Zander finds himself in dire trouble while Jane, Caleb and Trevor hope to unite with Margaret and Kendra. As Kendra finds herself immersed along with Margaret heading in a different direction, what part does the gold found in Doane’s car play? What is the significance of the gold press and what was its purpose?
Eve’s mind goes to what needs to be done. Her thoughts are only of destroying not only Doane but the visions and images of his dead son, whose skull she once again has to reconstruct. But, will Joe find her along with several on Zander’s payroll before something else happens? Just how far will all of these players to Hunt Eve and who will be the victor?
