Salvation a small town in the Old West where people are hard working and look out for each other. Salvation defined as deliverance from the power and effects of sin. Preservation or deliverance from destruction, difficulty, or evil = Salvation. When Nathanial Meadows comes to take over the medical practice in this small town little does he know that his life will change forever. Imagine what happens when in the middle of the night someone knocks on his door, enters his clinic and is critically wounded. Examining the patient he finds something stuck in his side: A piece of silver that appears to look as if it is part of a knife. The man in question is named Wolf and his body might look human but in reality he is not. Half human and skinswalker this extraordinary man cam to Salvation to find his bride. But, first needed to heal, rest and explain just why he was there and how he came to Salvation. The author introduces not just vampires within this story but skinwalkers who can transform or change into any animal form. Wolf can only change into a Wolf where as others can change into almost any animal. But, Nathan and Wolf become an unlikely duo to find stop what one man has decided to inflict on the people of Salvation: anything but!
As the story unravels we get to know more about the legend of vampires, the power of their bite and we need Alexandre Russeau who has come to Salvation to not only feed on its population but to buy and own the entire town. With his sister and his new bride he carefully, quietly and silently enters the homes of many of the citizens, feeds on their blood leaving them drawn, tired, and pale and with bite marks. A man so powerful whose eyes and manner are hypnotic that the citizens of this small town fall prey to his guile, his ways and his stare. Powerless against him and stunned you might say they fall prey to his bite, his wishes and find themselves unable to resist his pull.
When Doc Meadows goes on his morning rounds he finds his first patient up and about, no longer tired and lethargic and filled with energy to work. But, upon total reflection he sees on her wrist several scratches, which turn out to be bite marks. When telling Wolf about what he found it sets in motion a chain of events that if not stopped an entire town would succumb to what Russeau has planned. With the help of the Pastor, Wolf’s knowledge of vampires they set about to find Russeau’s manservant and learn just where his coffins are hidden in order to consecrate leaving them unusable.
A man wearing a black suit, pale skin and flanked by a redhead and a dark haired Indian beauty this dangerous vampire and his two women have to be stopped before it’s too late. But, can Wolf and the doctor do this without anyone else falling prey to their bites? Some are enchanted by him and the Mayor seems completely taken in. Hunting their prey and hoping to stop this evil man would take more than just luck and skill. Imagine what would happen if he and his two women succeeded in feeding on the blood of all the people of Salvation. But, the Doctor comes face to face with him more than once as a strange dog enters his path, causes him to freeze, every muscle and bone not able to move and his heart pounding as this dog sends a message that would send chills down his spine and fear in his heart until the next time they meet. What would you do if you came face to face with this creature that can turn into any animal, take many forms and had to defend now only yourself but an entire town?
Wolf Cowrie believes in Vampires and this half-Indian is their own hope to staving off what this Vampire has planned. But, the Doc and the townspeople need to learn the truth about this man, understand the danger and hopefully overcome their doubts in order to destroy the evil that hovers over Salvation. Getting to his manservant, DuPont, Wolf is able to gain access to the coffins and with Doc’s help they begin on their quest to destroy the vampire’s lair and hopefully kill them too.
The author takes readers inside the mind of this evil vampire; we hear his voice, witness his destruction and the threats made against the doctor if he continues in his quest to take him down. But, Wolf manages to take down both women leaving every other woman in town vulnerable. With the help of Pastor Wood, holy water, blessings on their weapons they hope to take him down before he gets his next prey. But, evil wins in some respects as threats are made against someone close to the Doc and now he has to decide just how far he will go and what will he sacrifice to save the town save the woman he cares about, Ms. Sarah and convince everyone that they are in danger. With a Mayor who is bent on allowing this man to take over his town thinking he has the answer to stopping old age, Doc and Wolf need to ban together, enlighten the town and pray for the best. The author’s research is extensive as the Pastor explains that each person needs to put grains of some type in front of their doors blocking the demons plus making sure they have a crucifix close by. As the threat comes closer and the final scenes are enacted what happens will send more than chills down your spine. Graphically depicting how Wolf kills the two women, what happens when a close neighbor of Sarah is killed, the final scenes are not for the feint of heart but will remind you not to get too close to a vampire without your silver bullet, your garlic, your crucifix and of course a rosary.
What happens when Doc comes face to face with the monster? What happens when Wolf faces off with the Vampire Bat?
