Air Force One Has Vanished: David H. Brown
What if a world leader approached the President of the United States and requested a favor that would change the direction of his term and office forever? What if this world leader needed the President to bring someone along that might have the answer to a medical problem that would otherwise be fatal? When the President of one country requests the aid of the President of the United why does he agree and what he does will provoke much thought, controversy and discussion as Air Force Once Has Vanished but did it really?
A young child’s life is being held in the balance as he was diagnosed with Progeria an extremely rare genetic disease that causes the person inflicted with it to age rapidly beginning in early childhood. What if a doctor has been doing research and has created a drug made of herbs that might either cure the child or slow down its progression? What does the President do in order to bring this person to this child and just how far will he stretch his power before Congress and both the Senate and House decide on his fate? Progeria is incurable and the end result is atherosclerosis leading to both heart disease and stroke. It is eventually fatal or a death sentence. Life expectancy is a child is 13 years old may be up to 20 years. They look normal when born but at about age two their growth slows down and they have little or no weight gain. There are many other symptoms. When a child is diagnosed with progeria the family is devastated and the end result is death.
The choice that you make about something after thinking about it defines the word decision. Choice is comprised of a mental decision, of judging the pros and cons of the many different options and choosing one or more of them. Air Force One has been reported missing and the chain of events is more powerful and devastating than the most deadly earthquake or tsunami. As the Deputy Press Secretary, the head of congressional relations, the Chief of Staff and many others assemble in the situation room many voices are heard and yet one theme reigns. As the Jared Winston the Chief of Staff announces that the Chief Miami air traffic controller stated that Air Force One has lost contact with them and dropped off of the radar he was warned to leak the news. Secretary of Defense Bosworth is furious and hammers away at Jared not with anything viable but with insults. Others chime and this groups called the Emergency Situation Room Group dubbed by Winston. As you listen to those present from Senators, Congressman or even Admirals each one is concerned to a point about the President and whether he is missing or the plane will eventually be found, but the power plays, the greed, the unfeeling and the jockeying for positions and whose next in line begins. As Jared Winston heads the meeting he yields to Mary Ann McCormack the Head of National Security. But, within this group of Senators and other politicians there are two reporters who are relentless and will stop at nothing short of making deals with anyone they can to the interview that will make their career and scoop the other one. Bouchard is the White House reporter and seems to have an in with many of the politicians and he latches on to something that no one else sees or does. Diana Bana, the Capitol Hill correspondent for TV station WNS calls her House and Senate sources for reaction. Each one playing two ends of the spectrum and will stop at nothing regardless of how, who or what needs to be done to uncover a story that will take readers inside the House, Senate, Oval Office and learn the inner workings of what is supposed to be our government and learn whether or not the American people is their prime concern or just whose next in line.
In most cases the person next in line is the Vice President. There is no Vice President so theoretically the next in line would be Speaker of the House Vance. But, first there are many points to be considered. But, the SecDef has his own agenda in mind and things that he might convince Senator Cummings to throw his hat in the ring even before the President has been officially pronounced missing.
The 25 Amendment Section 4 deals with “declaring the Office of the President vacant.” But, the procedure requires a Vice President. There are many other groups such as the Young Turks that are biting at the bit to jump on the bandwagon and will try and use the disappearance of the President as an excuse, “ to pressure the leadership into making deals with them to gain votes.” With the narrow Progressive majority in the House and a split in the Senate, the group wants to use this to their advantage.
But, a simple document or letter would change everything as a letter from the President named Jared Winston as his running mate or another words he nominated him for Vice President. This alone caused more than just words, comments, opinions and arguments. Author David H. Brown takes readers inside the real world of politics as we hear the voices of the Majority Whip, the reporters, cabinet members and the different styles of reporting of both Bana and Bouchard. But, what is really quite disconcerting is listening to the SecDef, the Senate President pro tempore Cummings and the many speculations on both sides. But, this book has many layers and the disappearance of the plane is just one part. What if the President cannot perform his duties? How can that be determined? But within the many chapters the author hints at what really happens and the final destination of the plane that everything thinks was now somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle. The revelation of Jared Winston’s nomination sent off sparks, flares and created a situation that would backfire in many ways. But, why did the President trust him? What was their connection from the past? There are many groups fighting for power and some are primarily concerned with the midterm elections and dealing with Winston’s nomination was not their primary concern. From the House and Senate, the liberal Mounties and the conservative Starboards and the Young Turks and those already in power, they lose sight of the big picture.
A humanitarian can be defined as someone who promotes human welfare and social reform. But, what if the President of the United States decides to divert Air Force One, bring along a special doctor for humanitarian purposes under the guise of wanting to cement and create a better relationship with another country? What if the reason behind this subterfuge of deceit as some would say was stated as dealing with issues of climate change and global warming but nuclear drones. Within each chapter at the end the author relates a note that the character speaking might have overlooked something or needed to reconsider a particular thought or move. Bouchard is smart and quite connected and he calls in a favor from a friend and learns the true identity of the second doctor and possibly the reason she was on Air Force One. But, within that plane there are reporters that are being held you might say captive. As the plane goes off course and the President alights the reporters are placed in what most would consider a holding room. Lacking passports they were not allowed to wander the airport and when the President and the other leader completed their business the plane was once again diverted to a military base but no one realized the doctor never returned. A manifest of those on the plane and learning more about who left and using his ingenuity and close friend to relate what he could not learn, Bouchard uncovers the hidden truth behind Air Force One’s disappearance.
Diane Bana was not without her own sources and she uncovers something that she reported would set off sparks and much more. Throughout Chapters 20 – 25 the author allows readers inside the many meetings, hearing the thoughts and strategies of the politicians involved and makes you wonder just what they really care about: Power, Greed, Control and the results of infighting. But, Chapter 26 will enlighten readers as you learn the truth behind the disappearance and the reaction of the reporters on board Air Force One. As Press Secretary Umberto takes the heat in more ways than one and one reporter named Gerry Bartlett lashes out with both barrels, the temperature in the plane is not the only thing that rises and one reporter lays out what she thinks and the truth will not set anyone free. When the truth is revealed you would think everyone would be relieved. What happens next is nothing short of mutiny you might say as the House and the Senate come to blows, politicians make deals, a young upstart named Simpson rallies some powerful people in his corner and the lead story is whether to impeach the President.
When the President is questioned and conducts his meeting in the Oval Office he responds to the nomination of Jared Winston, talks about the problems within both parties and Bouchard speculates about the possibility of impeachment. The author takes us through the process and explains it in detail in the novel but not before the President explains his reasons to the American public and citing Al Gore and his dedication to global warming. Added in he discusses the problem of nuclear drones. The remainder of the novel hovers around the many different groups that a vying for control, the result of the midterm elections that changes the complexion and number of seats in both parties, the push for impeachment and the unraveling of the President due to his health.
Never underestimate the power of the press as they all team up and create an article that relates their feelings, their frustrations and feelings. No compassion shown for the truth, no knowledge of the hidden reason why he reached out to this world leader and even though they hoped to connect even more in the future the media was crucifying him along with the House and the Senate.
Different sides and opinions are related and as Diane uncovers one thing Bouchard finds it necessary to counteract with another. With the aid and friendship of Alicia Rhinehart, she manages to you might say stay ahead of Bouchard. But, the health of the President is one issue that haunts him and when he delves into it further and we learn more about the 22nd amendment we understand the need for a Vice President. Just who will his nomination when Jared’s was declined? Why this person and how would it solidify that the Progressives would win the next election? As Diane reports on the disappearance and those involved and why, Bouchard handles the health aspect. An ending that you won’t expect and a serious twist that will surprise readers. Will the President be impeached? Who is really in charge if there is no Vice President? Just how close to the truth is this and why can’t the House and Senate work together for the American people and not just use their positions to gain control? Air Force One Has Vanished: Wait until you learn how and why? President Lincoln Merriwether made his choice and his decision. What would you have done in the same position?
