Tattle Tales Presents: MAKE HER SICK: THE 7th ECLIPSE OF EVIE EVERSOUL
As a result of a war that broke out in heaven in 1914 when the only true God instructed the Arch Angel Michael to cast out the fallen ones from amongst “his myriad of angels.” So he obeyed and listened and cast them aside. By the end of the war he had cast out one third of the disobedient angels. But, they all managed to land or wind up in one place and the world was now fated with humans who released bullying giants into the world called: NEPHILIM. But, that was just the start of the troubles to follow as each generation of their male offspring instead of growing more powerful and taller, as giants they grew shorter and less powerful.
But, these bullying Nephilim orchestrated 7 acts of serious disobedience against Jan’s once perfect creation now under the rulership of Soretoe. But, Soretoe was angry and one day while roaming the earth a poor unsuspecting 7th grader named Evie Eversoul, who just wanted to do good deeds and help others came on his radar. Poor, Evie, would never know what hit her when she finally realizes that she has a special gift, to be used for the good of others but would soon learn that all good things come to an end. Evie had a gift that was beyond what “was normal.” She would soon learn the meaning of “Crystal Clear.” But, before that she would have to come to comprehend and understand her special gift, the meaning behind the last and 7th eclipse.
But, first let’s meet Evie who is a typical 7th grader concerned about hair, clothes, boys, makeup and just girls stuff. Very popular and seriously independent Evie lived with her Grandmother or as the story calls her Gran Muffin. With her influence and that of her father, she was definitely quite unique, rare and not your typical teen.
Entering school on the 7th day, wearing size seven clothes, seven shoes Evie decided that she never wanted to change, grow or have any part of her body altered. She loved the number 7. Her sister Simone lived with them but at times you will learn she is quite overbearing, odd, and definitely unstable. Evie loved looking good and before going to school she made sure she was perfectly dressed and made up but would have to sneak out before her sister saw her or anyone else. Evie was smart, resourceful and at times quite cunning.
Evie begins her journey into the realm of the supernatural or unknown when she meets her front Tossy who looks like she just came out of a horror movie. Her face is red, covered with infection, mucous from her nasal passages dripping, coughing, sneezing and looking like a virus or a contagion that no one wanted to go near. But, our dear Evie felt sorry for her poor friend and what is revealed as she tries to help her will turn her life so far upside down she might never stand straight again. Within the second chapter we learn more about her friend, see her affliction first hand within the illustrations on pages 9 and 11 and then understand just what Evie might be able to do to reverse the effects of Tossy’s horrific appearance. But, first she has quite a bit of convincing to do and to find a place to use what the author reveals as her Healing Hands, to cure her friend without anyone knowing it.
Evie does her best to convince her friend that she can cure her or at least make her feel better but what they both don’t know is someone is lurking within the walls of the bathroom and using her recorder taping the events. Someone who is mean, devious, and nasty and loves to blackmail anyone that she can find to do her handiwork and hurt others. Thinking that this is what her father would want and that she explores the underdog she is convinced that Evie has deceived poor Tossy and revenge is just around the corner.
Then things begin to get really strange when Evie gets a new lab partner named Joe Armstrong who seems to have a quality about him that attracts all of the girls and even some of the teachers. They are expecting more boys in the classes and the boys are Nehphim, giant’s offspring of the sons of gods and daughters of men. The name refers to giants who inhabited Canaan at the time of the Israelite conquest of Canaan. Throughout the novel we get to know Joe and often wonder just what his plan is for Evie and the rest of the students. Added in we have to remember Donna Blackburn who is about to spring herself on Evie with her plan to get her to use her powers and skills to make her over and to be her “slave.” But, there is more as Evie and Tossy once again talk in the bathroom, not knowing at this point that they are being overheard and Tossy wanting to tell the world about her she was transformed from the Ugly Duckling to a beauty queen by Evie who makes her promise to keep it to herself. Why does Mr. Wade think Joe is amazing? What rotten thing happens to Evie in class that sends her halo filled with darkness? Who is plotting her demise and why? What does Gran Muffin do to center her anger when needed? What happened to her in second grade that she never forgot?
This is a story of mean girls that pride themselves on hurting others. Donna with her two cohorts Libby her cousin and Charlotte her follower and Tossy and Victoria who become Evie’s fair-weather so-called friends. Things begin to change and friendships and loyalties are tested to the limit as Donna uses her meanness to blackmail Evie into helping her transform and even make two people sick you will never guess how or why!
There’s a concert and Donna has decided to eliminate anyone that stands in her way but she needs Evie to carry out her plan. But, at home Evie is dealing with much more serious issues as her sister is losing her sense of reality and begins attacking Gran Muffin for the loss of her mother and what happened seven years ago. Dealing with her Gran Muffin makes a difficult phone call hoping that this time Simone will recover. While Donna continues with her scheme to get Evie to do her dirty work using her healing hands or wonderful gift. Donna swings back and forth between evil and pretending to be good. Donna hoping that she can get her to remake her too. But, what will Evie do and why give in to her demands? A concert that would allow her to go with the one boy that everyone seems to like: Nicholas but just what happens will astound readers when someone just might want to foil her plans but in a creative way. Donna holds the key to it all with the disk she made of Evie creating her magic with Tossy.
