Doris McCurry: Hypocrites
One evening would change the life of Dinah Carter forever. Attending an event at City Hall that she meets Anthony Farese the owner of a lucrative construction company. Taken with her even before he hears her voice or says hello, he is determined at all costs to make Dinah his. Dealing with an inattentive husband claiming to be sidetracked and concerned about work and projects that he has in the works, Dinah finds herself not only attracted to Anthony but also flattered by his compliments and attention. Little did Dinah know that from that point on her life would be different, someone would orchestrate her comings and goings and one man would leave her lift and another attempt to control it. Hypocrites: Doris McCurry: After reading this novel you will understand how people who pretend to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs or live by their principles do not really possess these attributes and whose actions belie their stated beliefs. In other words a liar, cheater, an someone who pretends that people approve of them in public but whose private life, opinions or statements fail to fulfill or justify or betray.
Dinah for some reason realizes just from meeting Anthony that there is a connection. When focusing on David, her husband, and trying to capture some of his attention, she falls short even though she looks amazing at this event. Trying to rekindle the fire and explaining her feelings works to a point but for some reason he seems distracted with work and when arriving home fails to come to bed for any kind of romantic evening. Work is first and for some reason there is always a project that supersedes Dinah’s needs.
Dinah and David have a child named Christa who is about to be 2 and she is planning a huge party for her birthday. A simple request to pick up the cake when the bakery failed to have it ready in time would change the dynamics of not only the party but also her life. Deciding that he needed to help out and requesting that he pick up the cake should have been no issue at all but when he fails to turn up for the party something within her and the guests realizes that something is wrong.
With the party in full swing and his partner Greg there too, she begins to wonder just what kept David until two officers arrive stating that he was killed in a car accident. Numb, frightened and having to deal with funeral arrangements she tables everything else, had to identify the body and decide what will happen next. Friends, church members and even his partner brought food but where will she go next and knowing she could not afford the house any longer she and Christa would have to move.
Some friendships are forever while others are false as Dinah learns from the start. Remaining in New York was her goal and living with her friend Mona in her apartment a start. Having David’s partner Greg over every Sunday to walk to the train and church helped her greatly but all of those close friends soon disappeared and Dinah would now have to fend for herself and find a job. Entering the employment agency and looking professional as she is very talented when creating her own look and outfits, the woman who interviewed her ridiculed her and chastised her for her lack of education and skills. How Rude! But, what Dinah did not know was that someone was following her every move, watching her every step of the way and would create a job for her because of his attraction and obsession with Dinah. A chance meeting that is all it was and Anthony seemed transfixed and over the top about someone he really did not know. Anthony is a powerful man and owner of a construction company who allows someone else to front for him as the boss. Dealing with his assistant Danielle, making his wishes known about taking over the renovations for the Klegg dump and hearing how he was able to get his way with the owner allows readers to know just how far this man will go to get what he wants.
Demanding things ready when he states the time and letting readers know that he was not using his real name Joseph Raymond to identify himself, he perpetrates a lie, deception and betrayals to get what he wants and that is Dinah. Learning more about him and watching how he manages to get Dinah hired and having her meet Leo Burdette who would be her boss is totally masterful. But, just how will she feel when she learns the harsh truth about whom he really is and why some feel his just might be dishonest. Introducing him as Anthony Farese who is with the Joseph Raymond Company is the first deceit and more to come as he wants to wine and dine her, take over her life, make sure she never wants for anything but controls her movements and much more. But, Dinah does not realize the impact she has on most men and she is quite talented in many respects as she gets permission to create her own studio creating her own clothing line and business.
Learning the computer programs was not a problem, dealing with Christa not easy and letting him into her life the realities remains to be seen as they both share their family histories. Someone is not thrilled with what Anthony is doing as there is an investigation going on into construction companies that are using inferior materials, mob related workers and other illegal practices. But, Dinah is unaware of his involvement and yet she learns when redecorating his loft and going to his office she finds the work of a detective whose pictures enlighten her to what Anthony has done. How would you feel if before you even really met someone and got to know him or her they knew all about you? What happens when Anthony tries to explain his reasoning and all he wanted to do was help her and take care of her and Christa? Watching her since before David died makes her think he might have had something to do with it or maybe his brother Frank who seemed to dislike her.
The dates are beautifully described, the banter back and forth quite humorous but the end result when distrust, betrayal and lies all come out will not only change Dinah’s feelings for Anthony but prove to him that she is not an easy pushover, that she had moral values, that drinking is not what she is all about and that he lost her trust.
