SEE ME: NICHOLAS SPARKS
Family backgrounds and pasts are often part of what sometimes can make or break a relationship. Just how far does honesty go and just how much should someone reveal about their past without causing the person they are telling to be alarmed. Romeo and Juliet were star crossed lovers perhaps Colin and Maria are the same. Colin Hancock is smart, wise and yet constantly in trouble with the law. Arrested numerous times, losing his temper and finding himself as person of interest all too often he never expects that meeting Maria Sanchez would change his life. Maria was born to Mexican immigrants, is a lawyer and works for a prestigious law firm. Colin is a bartender and takes classes in Martial Arts in order to enter MMA fights. Two young people from different worlds can they become one? Even trying to live out his passion for martial arts, and turn his life around might not be that easy or Colin. No matter what he does he often reverts back to his violent or angry ways but meeting Maria just might help him curtail his anger and much more. A simple flat tire in a torrential rainstorm would start off this relationship. Coming from a fight, looking all beaten up, no wonder Maria was hesitant to allow him to help her. But, kind, understanding her concern he managed to help her and then leave. Can this be the start of something good or is this another mistake in her life? Maria’s choice of men in the past has not been great and one case that she worked on that haunts her from her past just might come back in the present. See Me is more than just a romantic novel it is one filled with suspense, mystery and drama as events unfold leading to a conclusion that is explosive and unexpected.
Maria’s sister, Serena is a real spitfire and just wants Maria to be happy so making sure that she and Colin meet under better circumstances she hopes that fate or maybe even chemistry will bring them together. Getting to know each other she finds that he is more than candid about his checkered past and wonders why he is so open and honest with her. Each chapter allows readers to hear both Colin and Maria’s voices as we get to know more about Maria, her job at the law firm and her best friend Jill. Maria works for a prestigious law firm and often gets stuck doing grunt work and research helping the managing partners prepare for their cases. But, within this firm there is one partner who seems shady and often makes advances to some of the paralegals and junior lawyers. Maria being one of them has been able for the most part to ward off Ken’s advances but for how long? As the story continues to unfold and Colin and Maria get to know each other she relates to him about a case that caused the death of a young girl named Cassie. Knowing that her boyfriend was dangerous and knowing that she needed to bring the DA more of a case, as the assistant DA she tried her best but in the long run failed. Tensions build and she and Colin form more of a relationship and we learn that her sister Serena is up for scholarship from her school. But, something would change it all as Colin meets her parents and at first they do not seem receptive even after he is honest and square with her father. Cobo their dog is special but when someone kills him things take a sad and tragic note. Colin is always there to guide and help Maria but when someone start threatening her with notes and evil messages she begins to think of who it might be and why? Someone from her past related to Cassie’s death? Someone else that blames her for his incarceration? Dead roses are left on her car. Thorn-filled roses that are yellow and dead if you check out the cover. Just who and why is not clear but the person is also after her family and one member in particular but why? As things come into focus Colin falls prey to his old methods and finds himself arrested for violence once again. Detective Peter Margolis is keeping a strict eye on him and his every move is monitored but why? Lester Manning seems to be the prime suspect in this case and for some reason believed to have left the notes the author shares on page 299 and the reasons on 300. As Margolis listens to both Maria and Colin he is skeptical and unsure of what they are saying and yet he listens but will he do anything and will he ask for a warrant to stop Lester? Upon looking into the threats more closely another name comes to light in relation to Cassie. But, things become quite heated and evidence points in many different directions as Maria’s apartment is ransacked, her tires are slashed and someone is out to scare her but why? Added in the managing partners have taken a stance about the lawsuits regarding the sexual misconduct and they hope that Maria will go along with their cover-up. Wilmington, North Carolina is the setting and although Colin trains for fights, and tries hard to regain his life and wants to become a teacher, can he find a way to curb his anger?
Evan and Lily are Colin’s best friends and the scenes and interaction are comical and priceless as Lily takes center stage, wants to teach the Salsa to Colin in order to help him impress Maria and learn how to properly treat a lady. Maria’s parents runs great Mexican Restaurant and impressing Colin is their goal when Maria invites him for brunch.
Their relationship takes on many different colors or levels as things spiral out of control when Colin goes off and attacks an officer and tries to make Maria understand. But, the threats become more violent and when Maria talks with Margolis he tends to think she might not have the right suspect but events spiral out of control as they learn more about Lester, his family and dark secrets emerge. Just who is behind the letters and why? It leads back to someone close to the killer and someone that no one suspects. But, Colin is smart and Maria weary about what and who it might be. Investigating on his own, taking risks and chances someone close to the investigation gets hurt and just who you won’t believe. As the answers start to come clear Maria and her entire family are in the crosshairs of this killer but why? Just who is the target and will the police believe Colin when he explains what he was able to learn and find out? Will Maria ever feel safe and will her panic attacks ever subside? At times she seems self-absorbed and only concerned for her own welfare although there are so many people that are in her corner yet she often seems hesitant and unable to make decisions. Colin may be hot headed yet in most instances he is clearheaded, trying to think things through. The ending is filled with twists, turns and unexpected surprises as author Nicholas Sparks takes two people from two different worlds and hopes to blend them into one. See Me: Who is trying to get Maria to see him clearly and why? See Me: You will know how it feels? SEE ME JUST AS I SEE YOU! Do you often not see what is right in front of us? Do you ignore the signs and signals? See Me: An interesting journey into the worlds of two such different people whose lives intertwined as the author leaves room for a sequel.
