Brood X: Michael Phillip Cash
Living in a small town can be fun and cozy but what happens when you are invaded not by Martians, aliens or family but by giant cicadas that are uncontrollable, dangerous, and deadly and have decided to overrun your life and your community? What happens when there is no food, gas shortages, batteries are no longer available, phone service is cut off and your life reverts back to the dark ages before any modern conveniences were available? Meet Seth and Lara, Marni and Dom four friends whose lives have taken a serious downward turn. Seth lost his job and Lara teaches school but is having a child. Marni and Dom are down on their luck since he lost his job and they need a place to stay. Four friends that were close friends until this happened. The newscasters broadcast that there will be a serious infestation of cicadas and many people within their community left for safer ground. But, Seth thinks that this is just a public cry for hype and not until it’s too late does he realize that he, his wife and friends are in serious danger.
Irrational people of animals. Cars that are destroyed. Lives that are lost and one young man that does not believe what he hears. Seth at times seems infantile and his actions are not responsible. Lara is smart and tries to temper his ways but he is a child at times at heart and often does not hear or listen to what is going on in front of him. When the worst happens as he and Dom are outside shooting some hoops, the end result just might be tragic as the bugs literally attacked Dom.
The infestation takes place and the scenes are so vividly described that any faint of heart better not read any further. The cicadas seem to have a mind of their own, taking over cars, yards, houses, streets and forcing the television lines down, no cell phones or any type o help on the way. When Dom receives help finally in the hospital what happens when they all arrive back home is frightening to say the least.
Lara goes into labor and there is no help or hope in sight. What happens when your whole world crumbles and you have nothing to save you but yourself? As Brook X takes over, the police do not believe that this will happen and by the time anything major is done it is too late for so many. What would we do if this really happened? Why is Seth so concerned with filming it all? What happens when four friends go at each other? What is the fate of one?
When Lara wants to leave why won’t Seth go to her parent’s house? Others found their way out but the cicada’s are all over the boroughs, different states and many other places. Enter their world as the story unfolds, the drama begins and two men named Chet and Ralph cannot believe what they are about to witness and the fact that the hospital is so hot and the fact that they would witness an attack of the cicadas. An insect invasion of the largest magnitude wreaking havoc on the lives of many and watch as Ralph, Chet and Jonathan see the events unfold.
In a great neighborhood once filled with cars, trees, and manicured foliage a giant infestation of bugs would ruin more than the landscape. Join Lara, Seth, Dom and Marni as they fight for their lives one minute at a time. As story that will frighten many and make you wonder if this could really happen. Hear the screams. Listen to the neighbors argue and meet Jimmy and his mother who take good care of Lara and provide her with things that she needs, but when the time comes and so goes into labor there is no one there but Seth and Marni to try and get her to the hospital in time. Listen to Dr. Hawkner speak thinking that this brood of cicadas is different. Thinking that they usually do not bite but may mistake a person’s skin for a tree. Read pages 48- 50 and learn more. Ouch!
Martial Law, restrictions on movement, lack of power, Central Emergency Rationing and Seth who refuses to see the light until it is covered with bugs. Batteries, generators, food and other supplies not available, and many who do not believe what they are about to witness first hand, Brood X provides an eye-opening story that teaches lessons in survival, despair, hope, friendship, loyalty and trust. What is their final fate? Will Lara give birth? What happens when cicadas overrun their car? Brood X: take them seriously because they are not going away! Thrown back in time to when there was no TV, phones, electricity or modern conveniences Seth, Dom, Lara and Marni test their strength, love and friendship to survive in a world that will make you cringe.
Author Michael Phillip Cash’s first hand account of a cicada invasion is more than scary it is terrifying. Beware! Stay Alert, Don’t be complacent! You just never know when they will come to your neighborhood!
