Prescription for Disaster: John Avanzato
Sometimes prescriptions are written for medication to help a patient get over an illness or to prevent one from reoccurring. It can also be an action of establishing a rule, law or direction that a group or person can create in order to have some type of structure. Something that is written or prescribed as a rule, direction or for living a moral life can be deemed a prescription. But, Dr. John Cesari, gastroenterologist, has his own definition of this word, redefines it in every situation he encounter as he give new meaning to the words prescriptions and a whole other definition of disaster.
As a gastro man one of his primary goals is to perform colonoscopies, which I can tell you are no fun but necessary when needed. But, what happens when the patients that are slated for this test have more to hide than what they are required to clean out before the test? Going out for ice cream for his girlfriend proved dangerous as he was mugged walking home. But, not every mugger gets off easy when it comes to Cesari as he learned. Just as things got heated up someone came along and shot the mugger but not before he handed John something. Just what he handed him will set off a chain of events that will take him into the dark world of the mob which he left behind and a diamond smuggling ring that not only stems from Russia but right in his own backyard. The research into where these diamonds originated from is extensive and explaining the differences between real and synthetic diamonds keeps the reader’s interest.
Sergei Morretti aka/Boom Boom is not someone you want to fool around with and when he has his men kidnap John and explain things to him why does he form a partnership with him and how come he sends his men to protect him 24/7? But, what happens when the head of the hospital is crooked and finds his way to the diamonds too and with the help of his favorite hot nurse Gina they manage to frame John for well you have to read it to believe it. Sometimes he does not think with his mind but with you can guess what and when Gina requests that he help her get into the locker of the mugger who was killed what she plants there should have told him to steer clear of her for good. But, tears, wiggles and using her feminine wiles she manages to get him to do a colonoscopy that costs the patient his life and puts John in danger too. When the head gastro does his colonoscopies he does them you might say after hours when no one is around.
Diamonds are what everyone wants and John enlists the help of ex-girlfriend and Assistant DA Cheryl to get what he wants. Of course it might just alienate him from his girl friend Kelly who gets jealous and enraged and rightly so each time he steps out of the door and finds his way into what you might way trouble. Wanting to find his good friend Vito and get him out of the witness protection program is going to cost him plenty if he wants Cheryl’s help. Bodies falling everywhere and leaving no trails behind as John Cesari reenters a world that he left in order to get justice. Russian and Italian mobsters, having to choose sides and hoping to stay alive, John Cesari is not only a great gastro doctor but an enforcer too.
With Kelly at his side most of the time she begins to reflect on the dangers encountered and the sleepless nights she gets worrying about John and what might happen to him next. A colonoscopy that he does and the patient does not make it. The end result might cost him his job as he is betrayed, blackmailed, attacked, beaten and tricked within the span of just a few hours or days. As Gina uses her wiles to trick him into doing the colonoscopy she disappears and leaving John holding the scope by himself. With no one to assist and having to call for help John learns the truth behind what is really going on at St. Matthews and once again finds himself under the gun.
With two guys supposedly protecting him from harm and killing off a patient that is connected to the diamond smuggling, John Cesari is not only a top gastro man but now he just might be wanted for murder. Reggie Griffin is boss is dirty and up to his polyps in messy colonoscopies but getting John to submit to what he wants and return the diamonds he needs before someone else gets them is requires blackmail, betrayals and much more. When Kelly approaches him and wants to know exactly what happened to this patient and what’s next his response just might not be what she wants.
Alrosa diamond mine in Russia is where it all started and the author relates that Russia produces more diamonds than any other country. Imagine producing over 33 million carats. Throughout chapter 46 the reader will learn more about diamonds real and synthetic and the reasons why some can tell the difference and others cannot. So, Cesari googled man=made diamonds and synthetic and we learn more in the next chapter. Set up by Reg Griffin and Gina, John is now under their spell you might say to go along with their plan or lose his license and possibly go to jail for murder. With both Kelly and Cheryl working with him to find the answers he needs to get the diamonds where they belong, getting Vito out of Witness Protection and deciding what his next step will be, can John sort it all out before more bodies fall or will his be next?
With Bobby and Giorgio watching his back, meeting with Boom Boom and hoping to find solution that will make everyone happy author John Avanzato presents an ending that you just won’t believe. Betrayals run high. Murders even higher. The death of the patient avenged. A decision that would change it all as John Cesari uses his skill as a doctor to take that blade out one more time and well you have to read it for yourself to know what happens when he decides to carve something but definitely not a turkey.
