As Kera learns more about that the government is doing, the leaks in information that are coming out and the reader understands the wide range of technology used to hide sources and informants we understand that she just might be more than just a Good Traitor. Able to disguise herself, use many other identities she manages to hide from the CIA, from anyone after her and yet still in plain sight. As the story unfolds we meet the present Ambassador to China on a flight back to the states that ends up deadly. As the plane is in the air and the Ambassador is ready for it to land someone hacked into the computer system and a virus or bug takes over the plane and it crashes. Everyone dies but one person is not on the plane and it sets off a chain reaction that lands more people in the sight of someone who wants to take out more than the Chinese Ambassador.
Two more people suffer at the hand of this killer as a group of people enters the lobby of a skyscraper on Pine Street two blocks from the New York Stock Exchange. As lawyers and investment bankers tapped their ID cards at a row of security turnstiles, the computers assign to them an elevator car, grouping them in a way that allows the smallest amount of stops for each car. At 9:17 the morning a screen told fourteen people to go into elevator 2B. They road in silence as the stop stopped on the 48th floor with seven people leaving the elevator leaving four men and two woman. But, this time when the elevator stopped the car did not open and the end result it crashed.
Charlie Canyon is the brains behind much of the Gnos is operation an online paper that has unusual sources and articles with information that filters through special channels allowing the computer or Gnos is to decide which information is true an which is false. No one writes the articles but there are many who provide the information. Learning more about him and meeting the man behind Gnos is we learn about its capacity for information, how its being used and why the Chinese want the power, why the government wants to know who is leaking information and their sources and just how Kera Mersal fits in. If you read the chapter titled The Valley Rural Montana the author created the technology that is described, the underground computer lab and the reasons why the government wants it shut down and the truth behind what is really happening, article that links to Chinese spies in US business interests. With the help of her old friend J.D. Jones and a man named Ramon Bolivar, Kera hopes to not only clear her name, find out more about Gnos is and stop what someone has put into place.
How far will you go to protect yourself and your country? Kera learns that she cannot trust anyone as she learns from the start meeting with Lionel Bright the Central Intelligence Agency’s office of Collection Strategies and Analysis. As information is reported about the death of the American Ambassador to China, the evidence points that it just might not be an accident. China’s version of the story is not quite the same as ours and the information received by the United States is not everything that they have.
As Kera tries to clear her name there are others that want to eliminate her. Resourceful, smart and thinking she is able to hide in plain sight little does she know that is not the case. Contacting Angela Vasser was dangerous for both of them as Angela was arrested for the murder of the Ambassador but evidence comes to light that she was not on the plane, thinking somehow she wanted more from her job and later released. But, the danger follows her as someone shoots at the in a crowded area, street lights seem to be disoriented on their own and not changing the right way, Angela is now a victim in more ways than one.
The story about China is at the heart of the novel and the murder. All of the victims are linked to Gnos is and were used as sources from Rafa. When the story was broken by a journalist named Grampton he was explaining to the anchor person he he got access to a trove file of Angela Vasser’s personal files from a source he would not divulge. Emails, videos, photos of Vasser time with Ben Welk a man she was interested in, text messages, credit card transactions and emails and more that practically x-rayed her life and her every move, even medications and other personal and private information was revealed. He claimed she made herself a public figure and she leaked national security secrets? But, was this a set up or did she use her position to betray her country?
With Lionel Bright looking to bring her in and being accused of leaking secret documents about our government Kera decided to go to China and join the other side coming to the ranch of Ren Hanchao and hoping that he would trust her enough to take her in. She became a person almost without a country or ally even though she was not guilty. Joining the People’s Republic of China was the first step the rest would be tests of loyalty that she had to pass. A team called The Mirage Team was put together by bright in order to find out where the leaks were coming from.
In Paris a woman leaves her ninth floor after dressing for dinner. She pressed the button to call for the elevator to meet a man she saw when he was in town. Alone in the elevator after entering and pressing the call button for her destination something happens as it reaches the 20th floor, the doors remain closed and the elevator falls.
The program is called Termite and it deals with how information is being leaked out and security documents are falling into the wrong hands and released on Gnos is as stories. Three sources have been killed and more to come if who is behind it is not stopped. As the light shines on Vasser and they finally arrest her and question her what information comes to light and will she ever be cleared. With someone close to her killed and other member of Gnos is taken out too just who is safe and who is the next target? With news agencies tracking her and Bright deciding on how to proceed, it was decided that they needed to bring her in at all costs.
The story ends on an unusual note as the reader wonders just where Kera will wind up and if Gnos is will be shut down. An ending quite explosive and one young girl who has been branded THE GOOD TRAITOR: BUT IS SHE?
