The 15th Affair: James Patterson
Do you ever really know someone even when you are married to him or her for many years? What happens when everything you thought about someone you care about falls apart because you learn that they have lied to you? Sergeant Lindsay Boxer is about to enter her own form of the Twilight Zone or feel like she is in another realm. Called to the scene of multiple murders at a luxury hotel what she sees would haunt just anyone and what she learns will change her life forever. The subject on the floor of the room is a Chinese Man and the person last seen with him left after completing their lovemaking. Without turning a corner or her head this woman left and did she or someone else shoot the man in the head. Michael Chan is the name of the dead man and just why would anyone want him dead remains to be scene as authors James Patterson and Maxine Paetro set the scenes for a roller coaster ride more dangerous than the cyclone in Coney Island and much more deadly.
Alison Muller was an undercover agent for the CIA and also at one time worked for the FBI but whose side was she really on? Information about her was scant, her whereabouts after leaving the hotel unknown and just what part did she play in the murder of two young people working with the CIA to learn about a Chinese Spy that wanted to defect to the United States? Things spiral out of control, the investigation heats up but not before something else happens to stop it cold. Someone placed a bomb on Flight W888 and killed over four hundred people and another man named Michael Chan. How did Michael Chan get killed twice and why? Lindsay Boxer and Chief Medical Examiner Claire Washburn meet to discuss the case but the bodies are piled up and the identifications take time and the end result you just won’t believe. Lindsay starts to unravel the movements of the woman in the hotel hoping that the videotape shown to her by the head of security will illuminate something. But, just like a Rubik Cube that needs to have all of its colors aligned in the same place and not mixed up or out of order, Lindsay might find the squares in hers disarranged never to be able to form the solid square with the same colors all in one place.
As the case progresses Lindsay comes to the harsh realization that someone close to her has a part in what might have happened. With her partner Rich Conklin and the team assigned to the case they check out the hotel room, watch the video and realize that there is definitely something missing but what? Added in her husband Joe seems to be MIA but why as she comes home to find him not there wakes up he’s there but then disappears and cannot be contacted for quite some time. Red Flags go off and Lindsay wonders just what his connection is to Alison and why their relationship might not just be work related. Questions but no answers and she once again turns to Claire, Cindy and Yuki the women of the Murder Club but this time only Claire and Cindy take center stage. As the evidence begins to come in and body count rises Cindy is determined to write the story at all costs but someone wants Lindsay out of the way and every she gets close or might learn something about the man killed in the hotel she is attacked, bruised, followed and threatened but why?
Lindsay gets caught up in the case and she is fortunate to have Mrs. Rose take care of her daughter Julie while she is working. At times she gets so caught up she forgets where she is and why. Added in she gets injured quite a few times, blindsided and as the clues come to light she realizes that the man she married is not who he appeared to be and that he might not be as honest as she thought. Working with Joe in the past might prove dangerous if he comes back in the present and just what is Alison Muller really up to and why does Lindsay think there is more that she needs to learn as she and her partner interview Shirley Chan about her husband Michael, someone tries to get her to see his “son” in the morgue claiming he is one of the casualties, and then Shirley is killed by a coldblooded killer why? Truths, lies, ultimate betrayals and deceits run high and honesty seems to be tucked away down deep and has yet to come out. When Shirley is killed and then another identification of another Michael Chan is made you won’t believe the link and the reason why Shirley was also not who she claimed to be. With a husband who seemed cold and distant, an arrangement they both adhered to, Khalid Khan, Alison’s husband does not present an open front and his children seem afraid and alone. Why?
While Cindy wants to create and write the story that will set her career on fire, Lindsay needs to temper the flames and hope that she will wait until certain facts come out. Following leads, working with Conklin, going out at all hours of the day proves deadly at times as she is attacked just going to the grocery store, four thugs are after her and the end result leaves her badly injured but not giving up not yet, not ever.
Was Michael Chan a spy? Why was Joe in the CIA before she met him? What kind of operative was he? The ME for Michael Chan claims his body is gone and when found she might let her know the outcome of what killed him? More lies and betrayals!
The FBI on her tail, her husband and father of her child missing or dead. AN airplane goes down from China and Joe knew about it why? The two dead kids were taping Chan and Muller and told to hit the kill switch and they did. Everything went dark and then came back on. Someone killed Chan was it Muller? What role did Joe play in the deaths of Bud, Chrissy, Chan and the housekeeper Maria Silva found dead too? Did Joe take them out and what really caused the downfall of flight WW 888?
When Lindsay does come face to face with the harsh truth and two agents contact her what she learns when she meets them in person will turn her life, her world and her realm or reality upside down forever causing her to have doubts about more than just Joe. A woman caught in her own web of lies and deceptions. Bodies piling up and someone thinking she might be home free. An ending that only James Patterson can create with the knowledge that he’s not done with Lindsay, Joe, their future and much more. What lies behind what Joe is really doing? Will Lindsay ever trust him again? Will her Cube ever become one perfect square of colors? Only the two authors know for sure and they are not quite ready to reveal anymore. Lindsay Boxer: strong, persistent and blindsided. What happens when the fog lifts? Do you ever really know anyone? After reading this novel you might ask that question too.
A novel that will set the reader in motion on a high toxic ride to the end wondering what’s is next for Lindsay. Who Patterson will use to take her down next and if Joe, a solid character and the Murder Club will once again come back in full force and strong.
