Enemy of My Enemy: Allan Topol
Creating peace within the world today seems like an insurmountable task and one that is a never going to happen. Every major and even minor power has the desire to be feared, have nuclear power and to destroy their enemies. Throughout history there are countries that are considered allies and others that are a threat to the safety and well being of others. Imagine the diabolical mind of Syrian General named Nadim who has captured an American pilot and decided to use him as a pawn in his sadistic plot. A plan that he has created, orchestrated, coordinated and devised that will make Syria a dangerous nuclear power and bring both America and Israel to their knees as he hopes to get Iran and Turkey to go along with his plot and take out both major powers. But, one man who works undercover for Mossad and uses the guise of a businessman owning wineries in the wine business, Jack Cole has the wherewithal, the stamina, and the connections to stop what this man has put in place. But, no one can do it alone and he enlists the help of the head of Mossad, an agent named Avi and many others in order to take these powers down and free a young American pilot from a powerful family that has been captured. Imagine using him as a bargaining chip or a trade like you trade baseball cards or marbles? Imagine having a father that is tight with the President of the United States yet all the money in the world and threats won’t help him now. But, there are many more pawns in this operation as one man named Nadim has an agenda of his own and has taken to join forces with General Kemal, the director of Turkish Military intelligence. Turkey’s independence from foreign dominance was his goal. But, it was the plan given to Colonel Abdullah, the meeting on the deserted hilltop and shooting down the American plan that started the chain of events. Learning whose son this young man was and that he belonged to Terry McAllister who had close ties to the President of the United States caused him to give the order to take good care of this young man. The Turkish politicians were in on the act and wanted to as the author states: Suck up to the Americans. He wanted our technology to help further his cause. When his brother Sam approaches Jack Cole after so many years to help find Robert McAllister he refuses yet knowing he was going to put it all on the line without letting on he was going to help. Calling the Director of Mossad they refused to help or get involved until something changes it all. Shot down by a rogue Turkish intelligence leader and turned over to Syria for Nadim’s purposes and plan to work the ultimate ruse to finding and creating their own nuclear arsenal. Turning him over to Nadim the Syrian General would give him a bargaining chip to create this arsenal and have Syria become a nuclear power. But, Nadim is also going rogue as he does not tell his own President of his plans and has not gotten the approval or funds needed to pull it off. It gets more involved as a Russian mobster named Suslov, has his own agenda and wants money, power and will do anything to get the upper hand and take out anyone in his way. The weapons will be bought from Suslov and the plan to deliver is quite unique. As Jack and Avi a former Mossah agent team up to get information about the plan and each one has their own method. But, Jack needs the help of Layal Gemayel a Lebanese woman in order to stop what has been started and hopefully won’t get her killed as she has to befriend Nadim, pretend to want his affections and hopefully stop this terrorist plot.
Getting to understand Jack and his relationship with Avi and why he turns his brother down creates great intrigue and then meeting Layla and getting closer will put her in danger as Nadim wants her affections too. Meet Margaret Joyner the Director of the CIA who along with a rogue agent named Michael work together to get the Mossad to join in the fight, work out a plan to stop the sale and transfer of the weapons and convince the President of the United States to take a harder line and stand. Dealing with Terry McCallister and having his wife relate their relationship and just how she and Jack were involved adds more interest to the story. But, President Kendall seems too beholden to Terry because of all of the money he gave for his campaigns and more yet underneath he needs to realize his allegiance and where it’s supposed to be. Layla is a Lebanese banker and is about to risk her life in order to save Israel, the United States and a nuclear holocaust. But, can she without letting on that she and Jack are involved? Add in Irina who is working with Michael Hanley and have a close relationship that could put her in danger if the side she is working for finds out and learns what she is really doing.
Meet Daniel Moreau who is out to take down Jack Cole and thinks he outfoxed him when Jack closes up his offices in Paris sends his secretary away and then hopes to nail him. Witnesses disappearing, getting killed and Moreau was determined to get Jack Cole and redoubling his efforts, threats, strong arming and betrayals are just some of the issues brought to light in this novel. But, Jack cannot do it alone and he enlists the help of a man named Yasef who would pose as someone named Hussein in order to stop more carnage but sometimes lives are sacrificed even though someone hopes to do the right thing. Telling Jack and Avi that Nadim was planning a major operation somehow they had to plant a listening device to hear what he and Suslov had planned once they knew that nuclear arms was the bounty.
Each side planning the takedown of the other. Each side hoping to win. As the plan to move Robert to Syria takes place and then again to another country to be used as a bargaining chip what author Allan Topol has planned will shock readers as the President of Russia snubs the President of the United States, won’t get involved, each side hating someone else as each enemy of the U.S.: Turkey, Iran, Russia and Syria ban together to defeat Israel and the U.S. racing the clock stop the transfer of the weapons, the sale, the death of the young pilot and hopefully safe his life. The ending brings all sides front and center and revenge is just a small part of the game as lives are lost, some are hurt, revenge comes at a high price and Jack Cole and Avi Sassoon and Michael Hanley have to find a way to take down each ENEMY OF MY ENEMY until the sides are neutralized. Will there ever be peace in the world? When you listen to the news and hear what is really going on you wonder if there will ever be a day of no wrath and no threat of terror. Once again author Allan Topol takes us deep inside the minds of so different men who are fighting for justice in their own way yet some on opposite sides thinking that their ideology and thoughts are right. Just what is the real definition of Justice and Peace? Jack Cole is a solid character, strong and definitely someone I want to see in another novel by Allan Topol.
