THE GAMBLERS: CHRISTOPH FISCHER
Can you ever really create a system that will beat the odds and the house when gambling? Numbers are at the core of this novel as Ben Andrews uses his abilities as an accountant, risk taking and understanding patterns and numbers to create a system that most of us would like to be in on in order to win the lottery. But, he does not win one windfall he wins a little at a time and then accumulated 65 million dollars. The problem is he does not know what to do with his wealth. He has no idea how to save, spend or even use it for good. Alone and feeling that he needs to do something out of his comfort zone he takes a trip and before his plane lands he meets a stewardess named Wendy who for some reason has captivated him in more ways than one. But, Wendy as you will learn and the others that he meets are not privy to the fact that Ben is rich. Trust comes at a high price and you know at times when people think you have money they won’t hesitate to come up with a reason for you to part with some of it allowing them to benefit from your good fortune. Wendy has his attention and he really finds himself wanting to see her again but things do not always turn out the way you plan and their encounters are anything but truly romantic or realistic at first. Emailing each other, trying to stay in contact they form somewhat of a relationship but Ben is really interested in more and his money seems to have taken him over. Things change in New York when he meets a man named Mirco and the reader begins to wonder why Ben trusts this Russian who is quite astute at piker and thinks that he has a system that is unbeatable and part of it is just plain thinking he has luck. When his luck runs out or he doesn’t feel lucky Mirco has other pursuits and in the interim he has decided to mentor Ben, treats him to clothes, spas and makeovers and more in order to create a new Ben that fits the mold of a Gambler. Mirco is a bit of an enigma and you wonder why he has taken to Ben and refuses to let him out of his sight at times making sure that he will always be available for new gambling adventures. Who wouldn’t want to gamble and try out their own system with someone else’s money.
Ben gambles, drinks, goes to bars, back rooms and casinos with Mirco to understand his system, use his number system and hopefully have some fun winning but does he? At times you wonder what is going through his head that is allowing him to continue as he is primarily concerned with finding Wendy who Mirco says he will produce. Wendy is somewhere and he has no idea where as Mirco might try and find her but for some reason Ben seems under his spell and unable to go against anything that he says or does and voicing his opinion in objection never happens. It’s like he is being controlled. Ben uses his head at least and does not divulge to Mirco or anyone else that he is filthy rich.
Playing the odds, poker, roulette, black or red, drinking, women and much more Ben becomes something he is not and hopefully will be able to meet Wendy in Nairobi but finds Mirco waiting for him instead. So, why doesn’t this set off a red flag for Ben and will he find Wendy and if he does will they mesh? What will happen if the meet, wind up together and he relates this to Mirco? What will he do without Ben to manipulate and play his dangerous games?
Ben seemed bent on connecting with Wendy and when she shows up he decides to pursue her and leave his night with Lisa as a distant memory but is everyone who they say they are and just what part does Mirco play? Why is he drawn into his games of chance and what will happen when he tells Wendy just how rich he is and that he can buy and sell just about anything? Why is she apprehensive about splurging and what is her real reason for wanting to be with Ben? Who can be trusted?
Author Christoph Fischer takes readers inside the world of high stakes gambling to find out what happens when you are flying at the top and hopefully the bottom won’t fall out.
