What do bullies and bees have in common? You are about to find out but first meet Ephan who is an adorable elephant with a serious problem. He lives with his mommy on the island of Moonar and loves to do silly things just like an kid would. He even enjoys teasing his friends and he gets into trouble many times. So, what happens when someone bullies him and does something awful making his day the worst day ever? First of all meet Sid the elephant who is very smart and friends with our Ephan who enjoys being silly. Sid reminds him that this is not the way for an elephant to act. Barney is mean and loves to bully others. Ephan does not like him and he tries to bully Ephan and his friends. Most of the animals living on this island do not like Barney. Billy and Jilly are twin elephants. How cool is that! They are friends with Ephan too.
Ephan loves honey and what better way to enjoy 100’s of pancakes then to put tons of honey on them. Then after breakfast he headed for the beach where things too on a different turn. Carrying his honey with him it took him by surprise when Barney showed up and tugged at it and took it away from him. Poor Ephan! Just thinking about the honey made his mouth water but Barney loves to bully Ephan and his friends and this time he understood the meaning of “Bad+Mean = Barney. While Barney went off to enjoy his honey Ephan sulked around and checked out the scenery. I don’t like Candies they are bad for his tusks. I love tulips and he loves all flowers but he says thanks to bees there is honey for the flowers but as he tells everyone Barney stole his honey. This was the worst day of his life and no matter what his friends tried to do to cheer him up it did not work. Even the sixth legged race did not go over big with him. No matter they did he was still miserable until he decided to take a walk `and on the path he came to a huge beehive. Now we all know that two wrongs do not equal a right and his decision-making skills went out the window when he decided to make a bad choice. Seeing the beehive he decided stop and told his friend Skip that he sees a hive and was going to take some of the honey. Even though he warned him and told him it was not his to take he decided to take it anyway making him just as guilty as Barney. At this point the author brings in several issues beginning with trust, honesty, taking what is not yours and his own brand of poor decision making and not thinking about the sequences of his actions.
Justifying his actions by stating that Bees can make more honey is his way of thinking what he did was not wrong but okay. But, he did not listen when his friends told him it was wrong to steal but he had his honey and wait and see what happens next when the bees return and the Queen Bee goes on her own type of honey warpath. The reaction of the bees is quite compelling as they realized that the honey was stolen and the Queen Bee was going to find out who did it and why? Wait until you see what happens when the bees find out who stole their honey? Ouch ! Will he apologize to the bees? Will he ever be able to show his face again without having them swarm around him and you can guess the rest? Then we learn about how and why bees make honey and their special secret which I promised I would not tell because Ouch! So, what does happen to the honey pot he took? What can we learn about bees and making honey? Wait until you read the stinging ending? Will Barney learn his lesson? Read this informative, colorfully illustrated and heartfelt book about an elephant that we hope learns that taking what is not yours is wrong, friendships are more important, loyalty and understanding that if you make a bad choice you might pay the consequences. Hope author Nahd Poduri brings these fantastic characters back for another adventure and learning lesson. Let’s give this book : FIVE GOLDEN HONEY POTS!
