Danni returns in a different role this time as she has been working as a Marshall for 7 months and things are about to change. She is headstrong in many ways and set in the way she accomplishes her tasks. Graduating from the Marshal’s Academy of America, even though her aunt and uncle preferred another career for her, her boss, the obstinate, often rude and directly ignoring her, Francois, was not exactly thrilled that she was there. As a Weeia we know she is smart and quite capable to do her job but her appearance, not quite that professional, puts many off. Living in a rodent infested apartment at first and now moving to the Latin Quarter things change when she is giving another officer to work with namely, Sebastian a new recruit. However, he provides a different side of things as he is handsome, smart and definitely related to the office manager, Madame Marmotte who shows her distain for Danni every chance she gets. Sent to the Paris office and now having to train another Marshal, things change and so do attitudes when Madame Marmotte begins to just about tolerate her and then Danni and Sebastian have their first case. A wealthy couple known to Sebastien was robbed of a necklace and a painting yet when questioned about the theft they had a nonchalant attitude about it. Even when their things were mysteriously returned, they did not question it or how they were found and or who the villains were. Within this novel Danni will come in contact with a rogue Weeia. This is just one part of the story as Danni reconnects with Iaen, who seems like a tough guy, over the top bad and good like the kind of guy your parents would not want you to associate with yet the chemistry is too strong. Getting to know him, you the reader might wonder if her judgment isn’t clouded and her choice of boyfriend not exactly what she needs yet he comes through for her when she needs information to help her solve her case. Dealing with Sebastien’s sister, getting her style appraised and knowing that she should upgrade her wardrobe at times does not sit well with her although it might be an improvement and help her gain more respect.
the right mix of good and bad to send Danni’s heart aflutter. The two become very close and soon are spending all of their free time together – which may or may not be a wisechoice for DanniThis second book in the Marshals series is a well-written, suspenseful and thrilling read that is a bit darker than the first book in the series. But, as with any crime-fighting story, criminals die and the manner in which they die could be off-putting to some readers. However, the events that unfold are paramount to moving the story forward and bringing it to a satisfying conclusion.
As Danni and Sebastien investigate Derrick Collins who seems to be their art thief, learning from dealers about how he does business and his astute and keen eye telling the differences between excellent from mediocre art, Explaining the powers of a Weeia to this man was interesting as they are Emotional, Mental Material and Temporal each having their own special Henki with many different possibilities. Some are called Maximus, Medius or Lowes. Most Weeia are Lowes. They were looking for someone they thought had a Material Henki but as the investigate more you won’t believe just how powerful this person is and why he/she was able to point them in Dexter’s direction leading them down the wrong path. A Material henki would not have the ability to force humans to do something they did not want to do. It’s as if the person is under a spell and looses control of their senses and being. Mario Mercer, Carmen Santi and Jacques Generais are all dealers who dealt with Collins but did he buy or did he sell was the primary question?
When a Material person touches something as described by one of the dealers they pick up pieces from the past as he was trying to do when touching Sebastien’s desk while being questioned.
When Danni finally puts to pieces together and realizes information from one person does not match what another source says she just might find herself face to face with a killer as we learn of several deaths, several more thefts and the strange reappearance of the necklace and painting. You won’t believe who was behind it and why? Someone close to her created the robbery but with the help of someone else more thefts came about but everything was returned? Would you steal if you were not challenged at work? Would that be a great diversion? Why would this person get away with it?
When Danni finds out the information given to her by someone does not match up she decides to hunt the person down, make sure or thinks she will shake this person up but is blindsided. Having a drink proves almost fatal as she is now under the control of this person and cannot resist what she is told to do including subduing her partner. Will she survive? Will Sebastein be able to get her back to normal? Why did the police come and arrest them both? What happened to the killer? Dead or alive and hiding?
The author created an unusual ending with a serious twist as we get to know more about Sebastein, his background and the fact that he comes from a wealthy family, his relationship to the people whose painting and necklace were returned . Author Elle Boca brings to light issues of trust, friendship, deceit, lies, betrayals, loyalties , judgment, hope and the fact that Danni has to decide whether she can accept herself for who and what she is or is she going to fall prey to the wishes of others? Will she ever dress like other people or more professional? Is Iaen the right guy for her? Just smelling his great cooking and hearing the way he treats her allows readers to hope he is a keeper but what about Sebastien? As Danni receives a phone call from someone higher up at the close of the novel she is warned not to pursue a case and the whereabouts of someone connected to some dangerous and ruthless people and she had better back off but this is Danni and will she? Will she pursue this person in the next installment? Will Sebastien remain as her partner? When the story draws to a close many questions are left unanswered like is the dangerous mindshifter dead? Will this person reappear? Will Danni remain at times too impetuous and headstrong? But, readers probably want to know what she will be into in the next installment of let’s how that there are only good things for those that have: Weeia on My Mind.
