E.N. Nasimi: The World of Lights: The Beginning
Through out time there have been people who are primarily concerned with their own self-worth, importance and power. Within this novel there are three separate stories that will interact into one as we get to understand the meaning of hate, revenge, forgiveness, selflessness and family loyalty.
The story first introduces us to two men that live in the same village but are different in so many ways. Abbas is kind, considerate, often naïve of the evil of others in that he refuses to give in to it and although poor he manages to with a full heart give over so much to help others. Humbaba is his foe and the leader of the village who feels that his superiority reigns, his money is more important, his word and law final. When anyone dares to speak out against his wishes, dares to voice another opinion contrary to his they will wind up either in prison or worse. As Abbas has sheep that he often cares for, uses their meat for the poor villagers or sells them for them to use, Humbaba learned that he had one special sheep and demanded he sell it to him or else. Adam and Ahmad are his sons who are also quite different. Ahmed is schooled in the Muslim ways where Adam finds himself rebelling, drifting off and not concerned with school but other frivolities. Adam is outspoken in some respects where Ahmad more compliant and complacent. But, both are about to undergo a great challenge. As Dr. Jekyll was once a kind and well respected doctor, his alter ego Mr. Hyde was mean, dangerous, a killer and did not hesitate to terrorize others. As Humbaba is evil and will do anything to get even with Abbas, Abbas refuses to be like him and winds up incarcerated for no reason other than this evil man who thrives on his own vanity and revenge. Ahmad had his own difficulties attending school when one day he was kidnapped and bound. Taken for a ride and told that he was going to be asked to join a special unit that he would head a mission to save ten girls that were captured. The major or head of this division wanted him since one of the girls in question was his daughter, Elena. As this was happening Adam found himself studying, working hard and learning about the sun and its properties. Added in at the same time his friend Cain needed his help to get him out of jail drugs. So many people during this time period were only concerned with money, greed, power and disregarded the welfare of others.
However, this story centers around the Earth and the Sun as we come to understand how the leader of the Sunians deals with all of his subjects as he is supposed to be a perfect leader. If not he can be replaced but first the issue of the rebels who do not want to live by the rules set out by the government, those that do not like living with others of different religions, races or class. The fate of the Earth and Sun are at stake as the darkness does not lift and we learn more about Inanna who will be sent to Earth and her encounter with Adam might change it all. She is the agent sent to Earth the object of his interest is inhabited by a group that is far advanced than we are and want to learn more about The Earth. Inanna is sent to Earth to make contact with Adam before the world remains dark forever they must work together but will they survive?
As you learn more about the Sunians, their rules and government and then about Humbaba and his way of ruling his town you begin to understand that the focus of this book and its characters mirrors the way countries fight for power, greed and control today. The issues of political power, social class and many religious themes as the author relates facts about Jihads, Abbas accused of aligning himself with their ideology, his imprisonment and what happens that makes him favored and more popular when he is released. But, why does he still give loans, help people the same ones that did not come to his aid or return what they borrowed from him?
Imagine a world with no sun and total darkness. Imagine a young girl frozen solid coming to Earth, picked up by strangers and hoping that she will survive whatever ordeal she has encountered. But, first backtrack and lets get to know Adam and his co-workers at the Science Institute. Each one absorbed into their own worlds and Adam more like an outcast who is by himself. No one seems to want to befriend him. People in Europe as he explains think everyone needs to remain with those in their class or station and no crossing over. The world does not allow religion although people do need something to hold on it. They are concerned about politics, greed, power and money in whatever order they get it. Adam still like his father wants to help the downtrodden and cannot understand why he is not accepted. As in our world people do not always get along, government services are not always equal and leadership and leaders want total control and will not give an inch although the ruler of the Sunians was hoping to change that but will he before there darkness gets worse?
Adam like everyone else wanted to be admired, revered and accepted but one email might bring that about as he informs his co-workers about a sun blast and the rest allows him to take off on another path that seems to make him popular, more accomplished and now he is no longer the outcast but the sun is waning and things are about to change after this huge explosion. Changes in his own attitude, snubbing people and no longer concerned with Kristina or Milena who loved to gossip. Things would change as Inanna comes into the picture now. As he contemplated his situation someone would now come into his life and change it all. His work was his life and he realizes as others do in our world today that they become consumed with acceptance, the need to be one of the group and yet Adam would always feel isolated and different no matter how hard he tried. Race, prejudice, discrimination, the importance of education, understanding differences and tolerance all come into play as we meet Inanna.
Coming to earth would change Inanna’s perspective on life. Sunians lived at least one thousand years and her visit to the earth now coming sooner than the Director Ninurra would have liked. But, some things cannot be helped and after she deals with those that killed her parents and then comes to Earth she has a job to complete or will be replaced. Adam at this point has become a superstar at the Institute and created a book that everyone has to read and might use as their guide to their own research on the sun. Sunians day and night lasts longer than ours and they also dream their dreams more vividly. They are impervious to many of the emotions that we have and are chosen for this agency because they can complete their tasks and have military training. As the author shares information about the President, his role and why he is angry and what he hopes to accomplish next.
Will Inanna be able to get close to Adam? Why does he appear to be immune to her ways and not fall for what she is trying to do? Is she so emotionless? A secret meeting and a final surprise ending that will take lives of some close to The Director, others ordered to protect Inanna and we realize that this is just the beginning of more to come as author E.N. Nasimi leaves readers wondering what is next and looking forward to Book 2. What will happen is the sun goes out and there is THE WORLD OF LIGHTS GOES DARK? Find out when you read this thought provoking book.
