THE LAST DI SIONE CLAIMS HIS PRIZE by Maisey Yates
Some alliances are brought about by circumstances beyond your control. Alessandro Di Sione owes his grandfather a huge debt and because of this he is required to go after and retrieve a valuable painting steeped in royal scandal. The painting titled: LOST MISTRESS: MY LOST LOVE, is at the heart of this novel. But, in order to retrieve it and fulfill his grandfather’s wishes he has to enlist the aid of one tenacious, persistent, smart and alluring Princess Gabriella. Meeting her for the first time and dealing with her direct approach to things brings him little consolation yet finding her quite enchanting. Cold, aloof, unfeeling and definitely not a one woman man, Alessandro just might have met his match. Forced to take her along due to the Queen, who he came to see requesting that he be allowed to purchase the painting, he and Gabriella must travel together to Isola D’Oro to find the painting that so many say does not exist but there are those that know better. As she is cast in public as his assistant, dressing down from what she would ordinarily wear as a princess, Gabriella finds herself in front of the rich and affluent ignored, not treated as royalty but the hired help. Drawn to Alessandro despite how hard she tries to ignore his closeness and her attraction to him, torn by the guilt from his past can he strain himself and put on the brakes when dealing with her as he realizes that she is innocent and he should not dare make any sudden or otherwise serious moves on her, het he is convinced his Di Sione blood is tainted. He is tough, ruthless and the same way in business and when dealing with people and relationships in general. Love is out of the question and he keeps them at a distance and using women for his own special folly. Within the novel the author shares the family history behind why Giovanni made this request and the eight items he had to sell when young in order to survive this painting being one that he wants to recapture and own. Since his grandfather is ill he wants to honor his request but when he and Gabriella search for this elusive painting things will spiral out of control.
Queen Lucia is Gabriella’s grandmother and she has lived with her since her parents have no regard for their responsibilities to her. Analytical, practical and able to sort things out logically, she and Alessandro make an interesting pair. She takes things literally and lives a well organized and well constructed life focusing on reading, knowledge and the arts. While Alessandro is cold, heartless at times, unfeeling and bold except when it comes to her.
When Alessandro and Gabriella enters the room with the painting all truths about the painter and the image in the painting comes to light as Gabriella understands why her grandmother did not want anyone to see it since she is the image in the painting and if noted by the public would cause a family scandal. The chemistry between Gabby and Alessandro can heat up a furnace or a boiler and the end result you can imagine. However, one night or day of passion does not cement a relationship as he is not really capable of long term relationships, Lucia, her grandmother gives Giovanni the painting but what will happen next when he receives it? What about the half brother, Nate, that no one knew about until he needed him to save his grandfather’s life? Lies, deceptions and deceits are just part of what is brought out by the author as well as love, faith and loyalty and trust.
Each suffering the scars of what their parents put them through and each one hardened in some respects. As they finally try and join together and Lucia and Bartolo meet for the first time in fifty years what will the end result be when the Lost Mistress and all of the mistresses are finally reunited? But, Alex feels that Gabriella might be harmed by his ways, his business dealings and his sins so pushing her aside might be the best answer as Gabby once again has her heart broken.

Author Maisey Yates allows readers to ask the same questions as Gabby and Alessandro do: What is true love? Can people of different classes and backgrounds find love?
