Greed, power, lust and corporate deceptions are at the heart of this powerful novel about an accounting firm whose members and partners had it all and then they did not. When one of the managing partners learns from one of the other members of the team who might be up for a promotion that someone is dipping into the till of the company things start to spiral out of control as the person behind this scheme aims to silence anyone in the way. Duncan Forbes learns about this from Michael Turner and the next thing you know he’s attending Michael’s going away party to another branch of the company in the United States and poor Duncan does not realize that sometimes honesty can be deadly.
The Riverman knows his way around Glasgow’s River Clyde as he understands what lies beneath the waters and goes about his day. The Riverman has pulled many bodies out of the water and today would be no different. Some lives would be saved as they accidentally fell beneath the surface of the water while others would be dragged and lifted out and sent to the morgue to learn the cause of death. Today this man would not hear the voice of the man who was dragged out of the water and the ME Rosie Fergusson and DCI Lorimer would have to get all the answers. As we take it back a few months to when it all began.
Some beginnings have tragic endings, as Duncan Forbes is one of the managing partners of Forbes Macgregor a prestigious accounting firms enters his office and hangs up his coat and thinking back to how it all began and realizing that his firm is now part of The Big Six. Little did he know what a revelation from someone in the company hoping to advance with set off a chain of events that would change it all. Duncan Forbes is one of the managing partners of this firm so why wasn’t he chosen to head the firm his father started? Why Alec Barr and what made him so powerful? Sometimes information that you think will solve a problem won’t and when Duncan reports what Michael Turner told him about someone laundering money and dipping into the till a red flag goes up in someone’s mind and things will have to occur to silence not only Duncan but Michael too.
Michael has been promoted to another division to head it in the United States and his going away party is the catalyst for what is about to happen and we learn about the body the Riverman pulls out of the River Clyde. Getting to know the man that was pulled out and meeting his wife we wonder just what their relationship was as you read a letter from their son in school. The body of Duncan Forbes is pulled out of the water and the investigation implies suicide. But, when the police get a frantic phone call from an anonymous caller they wonder who it might be, why warn them about the death, why apologize and who or what made the caller disconnect.
Catherine Devoy is a member of this firm and she is smart, cunning and presents a different picture about what is going on in this firm. But, Lorimer questions along with DC Cameron everyone in the firm and learns the connection to several bookie companies and the death of Tony Jacobs the head of one. As we learn more about Liz Forbes who has her own busy days but receives several letters placed in blue envelopes hoping she will question her husband’s loyalty to her making the reader wonder why she did no approach him before his death and why she did not place it in the bin and discard them but instead buried them in a hidden music box.
Lorimer is smart and his investigation seems to be moving ahead but not fast enough as more bodies fall. Jennifer Hammond meets with him at the station and her goal is to come on to him since she has had just about everyone in her company. But, Lorimer is wise and uses her for the information he needs but she does not tell him the important piece and that is who made the drastic and frantic phone call. Surveillance tapes from the hotel and the members who attended Michael Turner’s farewell party and someone who would later kidnap Michael making it appear as if he is dead. Someone is smart and was hired to kill him but money, greed and power have taken over but his captive is resourceful and hopefully will find a way to escape and get help.
Maggie Lorimer is an English teacher whose students are quite challenging and one who will stop at nothing to taunt her and create remarks so that she thinks her husband is playing around. Rather than call him out she chooses to deal with this student in a different way but why does she think what he is alluding to might be right? What happens when she finds little notes that make her question William? Why not confront him?
Catherine has other ideas on her mind and when Phillip connects with her you would think she was the most caring and understanding person in the whole world. An accounting firm with secrets and someone deadly behind the murders and kidnapping as Malcolm Adams who is in on whatever they are doing follows Duncan and Jessica yet has little or no time left due to a fatal illness.
Graham West and Malcolm Adams both had a stake in what was going on in this company and one was more deadly than the next. With Alec Barr in their corner both thought they were immune to what was going to happen next as Lorimer and his team would be relentless until they uncovered the true financial deceptions going on in this company. Propositions from other bookmakers, money laundering, Tony Jacobs’s involvement, and his death no surprise and the truth behind it all POWER, GREED AND CONTROL! Fear is another emotion that can overtake some and good money from a business as Duncan sacrificed himself you might say by coming forward with what Michael had told him. Malcolm West obtained the date rape drug and made sure someone close to Duncan would put it in his drink at Michael’s party. That was the easy part. Then someone pushed Duncan over the to the edge of the water and shoved him in only to be found by The Riverman. No more Forbes, no more Michael and hopefully no more Malcolm Adams. But who was the brains behind it all? Who set up the accounts and made the runs to the bookmakers, who created this camouflage and who directed it like a conductor of an orchestra who led with great precision? An international accounting firm with numerous branches and facing financial ruin as someone is hiding it all in plain sight but will anymore bodies be added?
An ending that is bone chilling and delivered with flare, punch and excitement as author Alex Gray penned a novel of deception, corporate fraud, contract killings and paid for executions. Life deals everyone a difficult hand and some want more while others take what they can even if it is at the expense of others. Heartless, uncaring and yet reasoning out his/her choices for creating this mass fraud and deception with serious surprises, twists and one final revelation at the end as Maggie Lorimer learns something about William that will either ease her mind or tear her apart. When going to the River Clyde look out for the one man that you hope save your life in case you fall in and greet him with a smile as you too might need the services of THE RIVERMAN!
