Deceptions, lies, cover-ups, deceits and murder fill the pages of this historical/mystery thriller by Brian Gallagher. Throughout the novel the author takes us back in time to WWII and a young writer who seeks to write a best selling novel but at what expense to those he meets doing research along the way. Sean O’Shea wants to write that number one best selling novel and when he comes across information about a horrific 1936 UFO crash in Germany’s Black Forest he sets off a chain of events that will send him to many places where the Nazi’s preformed experiments, secret assassinations of those who dared to investigate this and other UFO crashes and sightings. Once he starts he won’t stop at all costs and as he learns of the deaths of four witnesses that were killed he and the group that is helping him from many places in Europe will become targets of these deadly assailants or agents sent by the most powerful man in the church THE BLACK POPE! This is just the beginning because if he succeeds in learning the secrets, finding the remains of those killed he might suffer at the hand of those that do not want what he might find ever disclosed. As the story unfolds the author brilliantly weaves a story that will take readers inside the mind of the Black Pope and just how far he will go to cover-up the UFO’s, what the Nazi’s hid in Wewelsburg Castle and how far the Vatican will go to hide what no one might ever learn. Sean needs money and finding out about the UFO’s .The settings are many but the cast is brilliant as police departments, police chiefs and clergymen join together along with Sean to uncover the secrets that have been buried beneath the castle. Uncovering information about the aliens, the alien theory and the links to the Catholic church and the Vatican the reader is filled with anticipation and fear for each cast member as you enter the world of the Black Pope, a corrupt chief of police as a downed flying saucer sets the scene for what is about to come. Hitler and Himmler are at the center of the novel as Hitler’s goal is to create a supreme race with allegiance to him and the Nazi party added in the soldiers of the SS find this missing craft and Hitler’s has instructed his scientists to use reverse engineer what they found for the about to learn is not fiction. O’Shea has a team of police chiefs, inspectors and a former priest to assist in the hunt for information. Using a trip to see his daughter at the University of Heidelberg, he sets about creating a meeting with his close friend and ally Alan Rockenback . Ripped out of the headlines and history what you are about to learn will shock readers as the pages turn, the murder victims increase and the team consisting of Alan, Gola the police chief of Freiberg, his brother Max, Alfred, Hans Bauer, Herr Schmitt, and other cousins of Alan join forces and create a chain of events that is so brilliantly constructed that all investigative teams should follow the protocols created by this team. . Sean organizes a many questions about these UFO sightings. The scientists as Wilhelm relates to Sean totally agreed in thinking that Hitler became so powerful by concentrating on domestic issues, but after the UFO crash he wanted to rule the world. Then the second crash put his confidence over the top causing Hitler to want to invade Russia. The Roswell situation was the perfect example of misinformation. Then another crash in New Mexico after Rosewell and you can imagine what the German scientists thought when the aliens survived. Showing Sean a special artifact and hoping that there was a lab to test it would prove interesting when the end results are revealed. Chief Barinski has the ear of the Black Pope and when the harsh realization comes about what he does to someone close to him will he switch sides?
With the aid of LaFlamme and Herr Schmidt and Hans Bauer the team is on the way to unfold what was set into motion many years ago but can they stop it before more murders take place? Information and an artifact that will explain the Robert matter and the evidence in a box that is quite compelling and enlightening the author keeps us in suspense until the facts are revealed. Learning about the retired inspector named Hans Bauer and the retired inspector speculated that the executioner was connected to a government or the church. Father Schmidt or Herr Schmidt added further evidence about the protocols developed to protect the church if certain events occurred. Finding Hans Bauer in Baden Baden was a plus but during the visit when the man with the bad skin learned where he is the confrontation was almost like a Mexican standoff but someone would pay the price but who when Alan and Sean came to speak with him but alert and armed it still did not prevent what happened.
Sean’s plan was to write a novel about the UFO crashes and how the Nazi’s engineered the technology and references would be made to Operation Paperclip and the NASA.
Father Schmidt met with Inspector Max Rockenbach from Freiburg and was told in a phone call first that they were investigating a murder from years ago. Hearing his voice and learning that their fathers told them about the UFO crash and what they knew about it what Schmidt added would put them in another direction and endanger more lives.
Father Battalini was on the other end of the call with the Black Pope and the man in charge of Customer Relations in the Vatican. The Black operations were called the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and within chapter 21 we learn more about it and the Opus Dei. The Black Pope is powerful and he gave the orders to kill and eliminate anyone that dared to try and uncover what was held beneath the Castle.
The research is impeccable and accurate as the author takes us into the minds of those that created the Alien Theory which is held under lock and key and related to a “scripture dealing encounters with extra-terrestrials and their involvement in human life. The writings about this are hidden and the rumor in the inner circle is that the Old Testament was changes from alien involvement to Moses getting the Ten Commandments from God. Without revealing too much and letting on to the Black Pope that I now where the bodies are hidden and how many you the reader will be enlightened when you read pages 135- 136. What part does the castle play and where is the UFO wreckage buried and just how far underground is it? Herr Schmidt was a close ally and friend to Battalini and when he learns about his murder things form a different perspective to him. Investigating the UFO crashes from the 1930’s the one near Freiburg and one in Poland the Nazi’s managed to remove the craft and the bodies to the castle. Four investigators were murdered while doing what this team was doing.
As the Black Pope brings in more reinforcements the stakes are high and the body count will rise on both sides as the violence comes to head with more than one assassin in tow. Author Brian Gallagher creates an ending so powerful, so vividly depicted that you won’t see it coming. Sometimes friendships change and the sides are shifted in another direction and the balance of justice just might tip in another direction but which way will it go? The ending will allow readers to know that someone close to the team will not make the final reveal and someone else just might pay the price at the end of someone you won’t expect. When Sean learns the truth and just might have enough to write that novel or bring it out in the open why is he told never to reveal what he learned or sacrifice himself and his family? Who still has much to hide? Who has much to lose? Characters that are well defined and a plot that will keep you riveted to the printed page until the dramatic ending is revealed? What is next for Sean? Will he finally return home safely to Cat his wife who has been waiting with baited breath for his return? Who will take the role of the Black Pope? Will Sean write the article anyway or will he create a novel equal to that of our author called THE VATICAN PROTOCOL?
