The Killer Who Hated Soup
Within this town of Defiance, Oklahoma you will meet some unique, odd and down right country-type characters each one with his/her own goals and who will stop at nothing to get what they want. Bucky Ontario is quite colorful language, actions and all as he leaves Louisiana, takes a bus ride to this small town and thinks that now is the time that he will make his own way, create his own brand in this what he thinks is the next great boom town but is it? There are many people that befriend him but his favorite is Chief of Police Baker and being young on the make he finds himself drawn to a young girl named Kindra who is not too bright, not really that educated but somehow has latched on to him and together they create havoc wherever they go.
Alsop the owner of the car dealership hires Bucky as a salesman when he quits his job at the local convenience store, which angers the owner. But, within this town there are those that have ulterior motives, others agendas and what they hope to accomplish will definitely cost lives. Alsop has an idea for special celebration to commemorate Defiance’s 50th year by taking an expensive car, wrapping it tightly and burying in a time capsule with other memorabilia from their time period. But, there is one problem when they start digging someone buried a bone and for some reason the Caddos Indians that live there and have been peaceful rise up and claim it is a human bone. Planting a phony architect is step one to foil this celebration. Planting a bomb that exploded and then someone killing Chief Baker stopped things cold for a while. But, first let’s learn about Miss Iris and Willie two innocent people whose brake lines were cut and who were murdered but why? Some think it is because someone wanted Willie’s job and would do anything to get it including murder. Some think it might be something else. Meanwhile the Governor, the town council and a man named Johnston want to build a racetrack in another town but the Mayor prefers it in Garfield County. In fighting and more murders come about as Deputy Harmon takes the spotlight and asks to be sworn in as the new Chief of Police.
Bucky is smart and yet impulsive at times as he has a gift for photography and has been asked by the new chief and Aslop to photograph the crime scene. In doing that everyone jumps to different conclusions about who wanted Willie’s job but the spotlight falls on Kansas who also works for the dealership. Buck meanwhile has to sell three cars every week or get sacked and his brilliant idea for the police department puts him over the top. Filled with scenes right out of an Abbot and Costello episode when they try to solve situations on their own as Bucky and Kindra decide to find her grandmother’s ring and the antics they pull to get it back will bring smiles to your face as these two characters brought some humor to this unpredictable town.
But, he and Kindra get into all sorts of trouble when she lends her mother’s wedding ring to Marybeth who is definitely a real character who claims her father beats her and still defends him every step of the way. Running away to someone named VI’s house everyone is accusing everyone of everything. But, who set off the bomb, which killed those two innocent people and when things seem to settle down they explode once more. When Bucky pretends to be an officer of the law and contacts a sergeant from another town things really spiral out of control and will Bucky survive without getting arrested himself?
As you hear the people who want the racetrack decide how they will win the vote, Chief Harmon’s role in the entire plot and then coming to see Marybeth and raping her, how does he wind up with Kansas her father the next two victims?
Bucky is clever and has the potential to become an investigator and putting the pieces together he realizes that something about Kansas being a suspect for the murders of Will and Iris seems off? Further investigation leads him to one clue that might solve it all but there are more murders to deal with first and a good friend whose life will change as a result of what he uncovers.
Mr. Johnston, Doc Little, and the newly appointed Chief Trigger have it all planned as they corner Bucky along with Sheriff Sweeny from Garfield County and what happens will be a complete surprise and turnabout. Who was behind the deaths of Will and Iris? Who decide to take out Kansas too? Who was the father of Marybeth’s child and exactly where is this child buried? What happens when Bucky confronts Kindra and learns some harsh realities about the corruption in the city counsel, the police force and just about anyone you could trust. The ending will shock readers and the final reveal will surprise readers filled with a twist, shock and definitely unexpected ending for Bucky, Kindra and the entire town of Defiance, Oklahoma. Author Bill A. Brier has created a fantastic character in Bucky Ontario and hopefully he will continue to bring him back as his role in the town will continue to be one of respect but just what it is you will have to learn for yourself as well as who the killer was who hated soup.
