Mikel’s mother was busy with her mob and did not get to spend time alone very often. But, on this beautiful day he would not only spend time with her taking a special walk and learning about nature and its beauty but also he would understand why listening to a parent, following instructions is valuable. Walking with his mother they decided to go through the park and would you believe he spotted a Goldfinch. The picture of the bird with black wings and a gold body is breathtaking. I bet you don’t know that the Goldfinch is the state bird of Iowa! I love daisies and I was excited when I was that they found some on their walk.
Some plants are dangerous and you should not touch them and luckily his mom stop him before he touched Poison Ivy. Do you know what would happen if you do? Well you have to read that part for yourself to understand what his mother explained to him. Sometimes children fight and argue when they are told to wear a jacket to be warm. His mom took one for him and guess what he realizes when he gets cold walking in the woods? Choices are fun to make and Mikel chose the path near the river next. This was the exciting part of their walk as he spotted an animal that was dark brown swimming in the river but they did not know what it was. Even his mother had no idea so what would you do if you wanted to learn what this animal was? Where would you go to look? But, first Mikel got so excited he almost fell in the river and his mother gave him another lesson in safety.

They left to go to the library of course but first remember not to run across the street alone there are cars. Mikel was so excited when he got to the library and searched many books and had to figure out what letter the animal started with. If you want to know what the mystery animal was and learn more about it you will have to go along with Mikel and his mom on this exciting walk and see the beautiful flowers, animals and enter the library and uncover the mystery along with him.

Author Ann Morris teaches children to explore nature, enjoy taking time to talk with a parent, learning about animals, flowers, plants and even the importance of safety rules. The pictures are so well illustrated that it brings the story to life and you can see the facial expressions as each mood changes in Mikel and his mother. Mikel loves to learn and wants to explore the world. Curiosity is a great thing and more children need to explore the wonders of books, nature and just taking a walk can be enlightening. A great book for younger readers and teachers to use as a read aloud. The next time you take a walk remember to bring your jacket to be warm and listen for directions and of course open your eyes to the beauty of the world just like Mikel.
