Bulwark: Brit Lunden
Reality is sometimes what we want to believe. Memories haunt us and often create incidents that we are nit quite sure even happened or hoped didn’t. Clay Finnes is about to enter the twilight zone one when you are finished reading his relation of event you won’t be the same. Entering the town of Bulwark will change your perception and make you question your sanity, what is fact and what is plain imagination or is it.
Clay and Jenna are getting divorced over a single misperception. Someone named Dayna; a reporter wanted Jenna to think he wanted her. Denials didn’t work and a bitter divorce was their next act or was it? After all you are just beginning to learn the facts and what’s next will send Clayton a path that will turn his life in many hazardous directions. A car accident in a place that it never should have happened and two victims that will never live to see the truths or lies of what one relates. Taken to a house the wife sees a picture on the mantel of a fireplace and screams, “ that the witch that stole my children. You have to save them.” True or false! Find the Gingerbread house on Linden Street. Is there such a place! The wife dies in the hospital and cliff’s town is plagued with more. His deputy is mauled and killed by wolves. Or was it something else? His wife’s house was broken into and all that was taken were his missing daughter’s things.
Clay is over tired and demands answers thinking his dispatcher Dolly might help him. But, when questioned about Linden Street and the Gingerbread House her reaction is startling and the fear will multiply. Were her children being held captive in the Gingerbread House? Losing Claire and remembering the blinding headaches and how his body ached for his daughter brought back memories. Loss can destroy you at times. Dr. Kent and his wife Jenna worked on the lady, Jane Doe but will they save her? Why does she scream out the witch? You have to find my children! Delusional or real? Owen his deputy is a hard worker and wants to help and asks about the green water that was where the accident took place? Terence is his newest deputy along with Sherri and sending Owen to deal with the wolves and Terrence sent home, Owen clicked off and went in search of the wolves. The trees were in the middle of the path and they looked like arms that were going to envelope you. The house was there and the smell horrific and he realized the person inside was a hoarder. But, nothing like when she opened the door and faced her. Thinking her familiar and not sure if she was known as Bavmorda.
Trout and Bobby Ray are odd and always killing animals. But, when Cliff sees them there is something that triggers his fear and Bobby Ray motioned with his arms as if asking permission to lower his arms but why was there a puddle of blood where the snake and rabbit filled bag had rested? Next we learn that Deputy Owen Bishop was torn apart. Werewolf or something else? His wife’s house broken into and then he winds up with Jenna but is bent on learning the truth behind the Gingerbread House.
The Doc is describing what happened to Owen and the events that follow next will terrify you as he states was it wild dogs or something else? Wolves he says NONSENSE!
There was a rash of these types of deaths before and then he asks about a family named Bavmorda. The reaction you won’t believe and then he goes and finds those two teens again and something leading him to think his daughter is out there. Chapter 12 will enlighten you to a story that Dolly will relate and you will learn facts that you might find hard to believe as she tells the story of the Bavmorda family who settled in the land east of Bulwark in 1764. They were a wealthy aristocratic family but the mother was tried and burned as a witch! His child disappeared and Jenna had a nervous breakdown. Dolly relates that there were many victims of this old witch and she bathed in blood in order to stay young. Every 50 years she returns for one year to replenish her supply. Hansel and Gretel were locked in cages but first were tempted by the outside of the Gingerbread House and started eating pieces of it. Kids, Dolly relates were locked in cages and wanted to eat the icing on the roof of the house, the gumdrops and more. But, what really happened you won’t know until Dolly and Cliff find there way to the house itself. Do people fall under the spell of the witch? Are they vulnerable? What happens when they find the house you won’t believe the shocking events that Dolly relates. Enter at your own risk but know that if she sees you, you too will wind up locked in a cage along with many children, Dolly and what about Cliff? Bobby Ray and Tommy are part of what happens in this house but Cliff uses every ounce of energy to try and release the captives with the help of a young boy named Jason. But, will it be in time or will the witch win once more? This is a story of rejection, revenge, hate, justification in the mind of one person, hope, anger, captivity and one man named Cliff was wanted to find his daughter and learn the harsh truth. Dolly and the witch have a link but what you will have to learn for yourself as they both argue and yell back and forth but which one if either will survive? Some endings are what most people want how fairytales should end and others make you wonder what is real, what is an illusion and what really happened? Bulwark is a strange town and author Brit Lunden created a story that will leave you wondering what is truth, what really happened to Cliff and the others and where is Claire? With a touch of Hansel and Gretel and a sparkled or glimmer of the Wizard of Oz and presenting two different endings you the reader decide what is fact, fiction and what really happened to Cliff, Claire and what might happen next?
Two endings with a touch of Rod Serling, the surprise of Alfred Hitchcock and definitely an ending worthy of the Sci Fi Channel of horror movies. Choose the ending you like or better yet create one of your own and let the author know what you think. Will Bulwark return to normal? Will Cliff and Jenna bond and be a family with Claire? Only the author knows for sure and I have a feeling there is much more in store for this town, Cliff, Jenna and who knows whom else!
