Uncorking A Murder: Michael Carlon
Imagine living your life but not really being focused on who you really are or aware of your behaviors at times. What if you pretended to be someone else, took on another personality whenever you are stressed, under pressure or have an episode that would impair your thinking and actions? Mental disorder or psychiatric disorder is a behavioral or mental pattern that can cause significant stress and even hamper or impair personal functioning. Within this complex novel you will meet Sonny Michaels/Derek Krunch, a detective as Krunch and a researcher as Michaels. Both have a psychiatric disorder or mental illness defined by a mental health professional. Moods change, personalities are altered in this case and the result can hamper a person’s freedom and even cause death or grave disabilities in the person’s daily life. When Sonny is stressed out he becomes defensive and takes on the persona of Detective Derek Krunch. When confronted at times he becomes angry and most would say never violent.
Mia Michaels and Lucy Hendricks are best friends but one has another agenda in mind and if Mia bothered to take a long look at her friend and realize her true motives she would not have met the fate that she did at the hand of someone sent to silence her. Sonny works for T2 a company who does medical research and he found the cure for Type 2 Diabetes. But, the head of the company does not want this research or information leaked because the company is going public the next day and it would ruin the IPO and even more his bank account that would increase by millions. Lucy Hendricks called her boss Adrian the man in charge that enlisted the help of Gerry his henchman to silence anyone that stands in the way. Mia’s best friend sent Gerry to stop her when they realized Mia had the flash drive and the research in her hand.
Derek or Sonny claimed he found his wife having relations with someone else. Going to the Bali Hai Hotel and meeting Mary the desk clerk he changes into Captain Derek Krunch a detective on the Pompano Police Force with a dog named Eddie. Pretending to investigate a case at the Clippers Bar and Grill, he as many patrons do talks to the bartender giving up too much information.
Told about a movie set at the bar and free drinks, Derek/Sonny winds up falling over and not remembering anything that happened. Yet, Detective Sam Tucan, of the Pompano Beach PD homicide division to come to the pier to unravel a murder namely his, pages him at least in his own mind. While his wife Mia, unfortunately spills what happened the last time she and Sonny had any interaction to her friend Lucy who sets in motion what happens next and causes someone’s real death. Not able to contact her husband we learn about Adrian Tepes Therapies, (T2) and Sonny’s research. Adrian Tepes if the founder and CEO of T2 and has close ties in more ways than one to Lucy.
Sonny found what he realized was a possible cure for Type II diabetes but the company he did the research for did not want it to go public. His boss was determined to silence him but when Mia found the flash drive, Adrian went into overdrive and made sure that Mia would not divulge what she knew and that Sonny would take the blame for her death. The news anchor talked about the upcoming IPO of Tepes Therapies, a local pharmaceutical company that provided devices to treat diabetes. If this went through then the company’s stock would fall and the money wagon would not go in their direction.
Things went from bad to worse when Sonny showed up pretending to be a cop and next he talked to Lucy who realized that she needed to do something and luring Mia to where Adrian sent Sonny, to the old church might do the trick. But, why kill her best friend? When you learn more about their past and the way Lucy really feels about Mia you will understand the resentment and jealousies.
When part one is completed which took place in 2011 we fast- forward five years to 2016 as the author reintroduces some important players within this novel. We also meet retired detective Rodney Peters who contacts, Farrah Graham and her wife and partner, Melody, to hopefully look into the case of Mia’s death and realize that Sonny has been wrongly accused and imprisoned. This case has been festering inside of him and he feels he’s about to explode and he needs closure for more reasons than just freeing Sonny.
The author shares Sonny’s final moments with Mia as he runs for his life and hopes to save her but it’s too late. Realizing Lucy had something to do with Mia’s kidnapping and might have planned or orchestrated it, he manages to kidnap her, take her along with him to the church but Adrian’s plan to take them both out failed. While hoping his plan worked he played a mental game of chess and concluded that Sonny was taking Lucy to the church as an insurance policy he hoped to collect on.
Uncorking A Murder is the title of Farrah’s podcast and the phone call from Rodney Peters would not only change her life, but that of others but will also enlighten the world to a major cover-up in the pharmaceutical world. Jimmy her intern decided to insist that Farrah call Peters back and nicknamed him Doubts. He is a strong and fun character that proves to be smart, astute and really has incites, doubts about people and situations and might be the link to solving more than just why Mia was killed. So what if he hates to fly!
There are other plays in this cover-up. Senator Stewart Baker was the DA at the time of Mia’s test and Sonny’s trial and he was headed for greater pastures. With Adrian’s help and now representing Florida, this former DA withheld evidence to the defense that never made it to court and the jury was left with little to go by and convicted Sonny.
Farrah and Jimmy fly to meet Peters and what happens next is fast paced as they go through the evidence Peters supplies and realizes that when looking at the timeline of events that there is no way that Sonny could have killed his wife. How they came to figure this out is confidential as the case might still be ongoing.
Detective Sam Tucan was the detective at the murder crime scene. With Peter’s connections and quick thinking they manage to get into Raiford State, Prison to see Sonny but only if Farrah signs off as his new attorney. Thinking about it she is leery yet by the end of their meeting she listens to Sonny, hears every word he relates and realizes that she will look into the case even further realizing he is definitely not guilty.
While Farrah is struggling with how to proceed, Melody is getting antsy back home while going through the footage and tapes that she sends back hoping that what she learns will be the start of season 2 of Uncorking a Murder.
Within Chapter 47 the author allows you to hear Sonny’s voice as he recounts his relationship with Mia, what led to him suspecting Lucy, her friendship with her and how gullible his wife was in believing that she was a true friend. Then he reveals that he was going to present to the team the research he created and found that would cure Type2 Diabetes. But, within the realm of reality think about what would happen to big Pharma companies if a cure were found. Would they lose millions in sales for Diabetes supplies, insulin and other products needed to monitor the illness? Why cure it when that might mean that there is no need for them to produce these products? ? Is it all about money?
Then the investigation goes full blast with questioning the witnesses from five years ago that knew Derek/Sonny and saw him at different times using different personas. No one would believe Sonny at the time. Why did Farrah?
Jimmy has an encounter with Gerry and innocently leaks information that will help him in his quest to eliminate anyone in Adrian’s path or way to get the IPO and the new merger with another company to pass through.
Adrian went to Romania under the guise of business but he had a strange attachment to vampires and what he aspires to and what he has hidden beneath the darkened walls of a closet will create fear in the reader and when Lucy sees it she won’t ever be the same.
Gerry is dangerous and after speaking to Jimmy puts his own plan into action when having to try and take out Farrah. Things spiral out of control when Melody is home alone and is attacked by an assailant at gunpoint. Using her martial arts skills that the authors shared when she attended class, the reader learns how to disarm someone with a gun. Gerry learns never to mess with a woman who is loaded with power. Melody is more than furious and when Farrah refuses to return home but is loyal to finding the real killer of Mia, things in their relationship take a downward turn. But, Farrah is relentless and what happens next and what they see when they finally go to Adrian’s huge estate you won’t believe. As Jimmy puts it all together with his research and realizes the implications of what Sonny discovered and they finally see Adrian and someone else for who they really are will they be able to stop another murder? Will this continue on and will the merger go through?
The ending is filled with unusual revelations, startling twists and turns and someone turns the spotlight on another direction as author Michael Carlon turns up the heat on Adrian and Gerry but which one if either will feel it more. Characters that are sharp, intelligent and keep the reader interested Farrah Graham is completing season 2 but will there be a 3?
This is a story about greed, power, control, deception, deceit, underhandedness, fear, betrayal, loyalty, trust, faith and one man named Rodney Peters who would not give up until justice was done. But, will it be enough to free Sonny and overturn his conviction? The epilogue ties it together but you the reader might want to watch the video as Farrah presents her podcast: Uncorking A Murder!
