MIND ME MILADY

Mind Me Milady: Kenneth and Anne Rothman Hicks

Can anyone go back in time and relive a past life? Can someone be so disoriented and so displaced as to think he/she lived in another time period and not remember events in the past or even in the present? Within this complex novel you will once again meet Jane Larson an attorney located on the Upper East Side. But, what will intrigue readers is that there is a killer out there who they refer to as the Gentleman Rapist who has targeted this lawyer and taunts her with his potential kills daring her to try and find him before the next body turns up. Receiving calls about his conquest and bragging about his kill haunts Jane. Imagine visualizing someone with a wire twisted around her throat and forced to do as he says without any regard for respecting the victim or caring about their potential death. Losing her mother, Martha and having to focus on the cases she left behind and then trying to stop this madman, is just a small tip of a very large iceberg. Added in she has been hired by a naïve, odd, young woman named Susan who at times makes you wonder if she is plugged in a short circuit. Jane has troubles of her own within her life as her boyfriend seems to be stalking and bothering her and Susan presents more conflicts and danger than having her as a client is worth. Added other client Grace is getting a divorce and happens to have hired Susan as an assistant at her school much to everyone’s dismay. Susan has problems remembering blocks of time from her past and dreams and we will witness one about her past life when she was raped. Going through her mother’s legal cases and she learns that it might not be within her legal expertise to represent Susan Clymer who seems to fall prey to what others want her to believe. Living with her aunt when losing her parents, abused and berated by the one person who was supposed to protect and guard her, she is left a huge inheritance when her aunt passes away. Many people want to learn about their parents, their pasts and childhoods when not really a part of it because they are placed in foster homes, adopted or in this case with an aunt as a guardian. But, Susan seems disoriented and confused at times and believes just about anything anyone tells her and puts her faith in the wrong people. Added in Henry Jacobs is the lawyer for Grace’s soon to be ex-husband and a file that she finds holds the key to why he gave her everything she wanted. So, why does Jane feel there is a hidden truth lying beneath the signatures on the agreement and appears uncomfortable with the final outcome?

Jack and Susan seem to bond even though Jane seems skeptical about this alliance. Madame Rosa has an unusual spell or hold over Susan who appears to fall prey to her wishes and at times you want to shake her up and make her realize that her realities or what she believes might be what someone else had placed in her mind.

Grace hired Susan so why did the Rapist target her next? Humiliating and creating sadistic murders while the authors share his voice as he demonstrates his tortures, explains what was done to him by his mother and how he managed to control women. Susan seems to think about her past and is reliving it as Madame Rosa taped her session but why did it appear in the papers and what is her motive? Was she an indentured girl servant? Did a Colonial master own her during the Revolutionary War? Her descriptions are vivid and her account seems plausible but Jane and many others might not believe everything they hear. With her warnings against what is happening and trying to protect Susan, things get worse when they go to a political debate that gets out of hand and Susan starts to flash back and her actions warrant her being removed as once again psychic Madame Rosa tries to take charge but Jane fields her actions and removes Susan who seems disoriented and ill. Grace is gone and others will follow at the Gentleman Rapist escalates his murders and things get more dangerous as we learn his prime target might be Susan. While all of this is happening Jane needs to focus on her own legal practice, find out more about Susan’s inheritance, her school records and in the middle of it all the lawyer that handled her aunt’s estate is found dead.

Flashbacks are the norm with Susan but I wonder if they are real, reliving her past or just lucid dreams. As we once again hear the voice of this rapist we wonder what control he really has over his victims, why he feels they are enamored with him and just how delusional he really is!

He researches his victims, and then cons them into meeting him as he justifies he actions and torture. Susan’s migraines trigger her dreams and before long you begin to wonder what is real and what is imagined. Why did she stare at Riggs and yell out that someone raped her? Was it him? What did she remember?

Jack is a teacher working with Susan and they are dealing with a school project based on the Revolutionary War. Could she be dreaming about how do help handling it? Why is Jack so eager to help out with Susan and why does he and Jane wind up at Madame Rosa for her sessions with Susan? Miles her ex-boyfriend constantly shows up making you wonder what his real motives are concerning Jane. Added in Sofia Torres, Jane’s friend and the detective on this case, seems at times aloof and not really centered or believing in what Susan is saying and her actions at times are not very serious.

An elderly woman sees Susan at the debate, finds a picture and then is the next victim. What did the picture show? Then Grace’s husband’s lies come out and the reason why she would get her settlement. Blackmail, murder, fear, betrayal, hate, revenge, power and greed are at the heart of this novel. But, when Jane realizes who is behind the plot, which wants Susan out of the way it a stem way back and you won’t believe how or why.

Face to face with adversity and learning who was behind the diary that was stolen, what was in it, Grace’s part, who wanted her dead, you won’t believe how everything links together. Jack and Jane face off with someone and then both face the consequences of a powerful family. But, who is the Gentleman Serial Killer? Will Jane be his next victim and will she survive? When push comes to shove and she faces him square on will she adhere to his mantra and MIND ME, MIDLADY or will she fight back? Jane Larsen is someone that you don’t want to take lightly and Jack well let’s hope we get to know more about both of them again.
