Rigorous training, hard work and definitely fit for the job as Jed Hunter trains to become a CIA operative and when his training is completed he’s officially inducted into the CIA: so, why do they want him dead? After all of the many hours training, learning the methods of questioning orthodox and non-orthodox, he’s sent out by the man whose job it is to train the recruits, Richter and finds himself alone in New Orleans with a contact to meet and orders to follow but not everyone and everything is what it seems. Entering the bar and hoping to meet his contact a young girl named Steph Mensch intercepts him and warns him of impending danger. His contact is supposed to come up to him and create a canned conversation but in reality the man he meets is not the person slated to work the case with him, he’s sent to take Jed out but why?
Joining the CIA instead of a desk job at the end of his career with the Air Force and enduring the training that would break many others and given a new identity, an alias named by his handler Harold Richter, little does he realize that his salvation would be Steph. A British agent who seems to be on target and following him has her own agenda that she wants him to buy into as there is a huge yacht with Russians hoping to score big money and big drug or arms deals right in our own waters. But, there are many obstacles and many agents who are sent to take out Jed and with the help of Steph he hopes to find out more about this yacht and whose behind wanting him destroyed. Steph seems to know more about the yacht filled with Russians and what they are going to and who is buying it. Things become out of control and with his contact Marty Bloom, Jed hopes to learn more about the ship and why he was supposed to be taken to Fort Lee. When he arrives in the wrong place at the wrong time he places not only himself in danger but Steph too as they demand that he complete a mission and without any question with tracking devices and phones that they supply and will know his every move. But, will he survive? Two agents sent to take him out but he wins but when on this mission will he be able to contact Marty, get the Intel he needs but why does Johnson want him dead and what role does Richter play is he a double agent? His role was to exchange code messages or phrases but the contact at the start of the novel never makes it and Steph becomes his mainstay and that his first cover has been blown forcing him to take out the spy and the assailant in the bar’s restroom.
The Russians want a secret weapon and will spend millions for it while trying to avoid attacks from a private security firm called Blackwater. The climate and weather becomes deadly as Hurricane Karina takes the spotlight.
Steph learns more about the Russian mission and what they are after and what they are about to buy. Things spiral even more out of control as Hurricane Katrina takes center stage and the men from Gladstone decide to go after Walker. Meeting them we have them working with Bloom but the truth behind what Stephanie uncovers is bone chilling. An ending that will keep you knee keep in water, freezing from the rain falling down all over you, guns drawn spies taken down and the final outcome you just won’t believe.
Richter wanted to take Jed down but he had a hidden reason that was personal. Steph became a hostage at the Greystone base and Jed with the help of his friend Luke would hope to rescue her but will it be in time? Lies, deceptions, double agents, hacking and everyone has a price but how high will it be? Why did Richter go after Jed and set him up you the reader will have to decide if he deserves what happens in the end. With the hurricane coming close and about to take hold Jed meets some looters and they learn a lesson they will surely never forget.
Steph comes clean with her agenda and talks about the agent in question that is a Six, asset who they’ve cultivated for close to a decade but is he a triple? Why does she trust this man? Igor Peskov when you meet you will learn just what he was after, if she should have embraced his trust and the final outcome will be decided in a war on war that you won’t ever forget that is begin fought. Marty Bloom comes in front and center with agents Chevz and Oberman who have no choice but to follow his lead and his orders. Just who can be trusted and who works for which agency and why? Peskov is one, Spicer is another and revenge takes the spotlight and lives are lost, a storm rages its fury and author James Phelan allows readers to know just what the Russians had and were after but is it over? The final chapters will enlighten readers and let you know that nuclear war can happen, destruction might if a lone rebel or militant or terrorist comes and does his work or bidding unnoticed. The final conversation between Bloom and Walker will let you know that there is much more to come and where will the next one take Walker? Bloom even brings in the head of M 16 and the interaction is quite compelling. Steph comes to life and helps handle the final round of blows but where will she turn up next and will she ever meet up with Walker again or will he return to Eve and his family? An open ended ending leaving readers wondering what will the agency give Walker next to do and will it be a real mission or will he be set up again as this multiple plot novel comes to a dramatic and climatic close.
