The Three Beths: Jeff Abbott
Sometimes we see what we hope is true but in reality it might not be. Our eyes can play tricks on us or we want to see a vision but is it really wishful thinking? Within the crowds of people at a food court Mariah Dunning thinks that she sees her missing mother. Staring at her, waving and trying to get the attention of this person that she thinks is Beth Dunning, the end result is that she runs out of the food court, leaving her father to wonder where she is going and then getting into an accident while driving at record speed only to lose the person.
“ My mom would never leave me,” is what Mariah Dunning thought but is that true? Was the person she saw and chased after her mother or was she imagining it? Her mother disappeared without any trace of what happened to her. No body was ever discovered or found any physical evidence or DNA to help clear her father’s name since the police believe he was the reason for her disappearance. Living in the town of Lakehaven, Mariah decides to investigate her mother’s disappearance and learns about Bethany Blevins Curtis and another Beth or Lizbeth. How do they connect is what author Jeff Abbott will help readers learn.
Mariah is tough and is bent on clearing her father’s name but she is also tenacious and hardnosed and will stop at nothing to learn the truth about her mother’s disappearance even if she has to interfere with police procedures. Learning about Beth Curtis she visits her mother Sharon and delves into her daughter’s life learning that Beth and her husband Jake had some problems and she asked for a divorce. But, did he kill her? His computer software company was going public and they would have millions, why would she just disappear? Added in Mariah finds a link to a Webcon that both attend every year, could that be a link?
Reveal is a newscaster that befriends Mariah, and he wants to help delve into the disappearance of both Beths hoping that he will get the job offered to two others and be on top.
Mariah befriends Julie who worked with Beth Curtis and then Andy who is Julie’s boyfriend, hoping to learn more about Beth and even getting him as a client for her own company.
Convinced that Craig killed his wife, Detective Broussard follows him to where he’s searching for anything to lead him to his wife. Trying to goad him into confessing and not looking for the real killer. It seems once they have a suspect why go further.
Bethany’s journals are in her room and Mariah reads about her torment after finding her father’s body learning he committed suicide. Added in we also learn about drugs and alcohol related to Bethany and Sharon claiming they belonged to Lizbeth a friend she met in a writing group. The journal consists of prompts and what she writes about her father allowing Mariah to understand her better.
Mariah is relentless and wants to meet up with Jake, Bethany’s husband to get an idea about what happened to her and maybe the real story.
When Mariah goes to her mother’s company and asks for the emails and other receipts what she learns is a definite link to Bethany Curtis but what’s more is a secret part of her mother that she did not know. Cross examining her father she directly asks about their marriage and what she learns sends her into a frenzy as Mariah cannot seem to handle confrontation, discord or any information that seems to rule out what she thinks is a perfect life. She seems to be taking all f the event personally and not really regarding how they impact anyone else.
Mariah finally meets with Jake and as the discussion goes information comes to light and another possible suspect in Bethany’s disappearance comes to light. Jake resented that both Sharon and Andy were clinging to his wife. He felt that he came second. However, the link to her mother and the emails and whatever his wife asked her mom to keep safe is still not known.
Telling Jake what happened when her mother just disappeared and she and her father fought about whether she was cheating on him. While Jake ‘s wife was accused of embezzling money from her company and Andy defended her but Jake said she drank a lot and thought someone drugged her a bar and what role did Lizbeth play?
Things get even tenser and Jake and Mariah team up but who is threatening her father and what is the significance of the rocks and the notes.
Jake seems distraught about his wife’s disappearance and her father’s suicide as Mariah does not know where her mother is and why she disappeared but theses two Beth’s link for sure.
Author Jeff Abbott keeps the pressure on Craig and turns the heat up do strong that Craig might not ever get back to normal and Mariah is at the support meeting that Reveal is running but what is she hoping to gain? The support meeting turned ugly as Sharon lashed out at both Jake and Mariah and then both of them bonded in a different way. Her father in danger and her mind reeling at times Mariah is irrational and unfocused. Seeing it her way as the author created her and at times she loses sight of reality and forces her will and thoughts on others only sees it through her eyes.
There is someone lurking in the dark that wants to destroy not only Craig and make him leave his home but anyone that dared to come in this person’s light for any reason. Two Beths are still missing and the link is a friendship that no one knew about when they met at WebCon. But, what was on the DVD that had her mother’s name? What was she holding for Bethany Curtis that might change it all if they would learn what it is? Two women left one disappeared and one because she claimed to feel neglected because her husband wanted his company more than her but was that true? Guilt is all over everyone and some would profit from the deaths of the others but there is someone else hiding in the shadows and just what is this person’s agenda and who is attacking Craig? Who is the third Beth?
When Mariah finds her way to understanding what exactly happened to Bethany at work, who set her up for the embezzlement and who was behind what happened to her mother and the other Beth, memories flood back as she faces a hard nosed diabolical killer who orchestrated a plan so sinister, so sick and so deranged that the person actually believed that the justice inflicted was justified. An ending that will make Mariah dig down deep and search her soul for what she learns will change her life and cause her to see herself in another light. What really happened to both Baths? What about the third one? What is the secret that someone wanted buried forever? Author Jeff Abbott takes us deep into the minds of all of his characters who are seriously flawed, delusional to a point and sees the world through their own veiled eyes until the mist is lifted and the harsh truths, lies, betrayals and deceits are revealed and the answer to the question is what happened to THE THREE BETHS?
