Beyond the Truth: Bruce Coffin

An officer takes a call and his life will change forever. A robbery at a Laundromat where two teens dressed in different colored hoodies rob the manager at what appears to be gunpoint. Officer Haggerty takes the call and trudged through snow banks and then on foot to catch theses kids. But, things got out of control and one got away while the other appeared to have a gun pointed at him and shots ring out and one robber is dead.

Calls for assistance were answered but response was slow and officers and other units were otherwise engaged. When sergeant John Byron arrives events fall into place as the ME is called the lieutenant is on his way other houses are there and the scene is flooded with people taking statements evidence and scanning for witnesses.

Teamwork is evident and Byron introduces Haggerty to the investigators including Diane his firmer partner and girlfriend. Moving up changed her role and their relationship too.

Pelligrosso, Phillips, Pepin, Nugent and Tran are back again to work the case in a methodical and professional manner alongside Byron. The victim is a high school student and captain of the basketball team and popular.

As the case progresses Byron realizes that witnesses do not always remember events the same way. The manager of the Laundromat and the customer both described the gun in the robber’s hand but not the same make. The mayor has her own private agenda and so does the acting police chief letting readers know politics was involved. Byron ran the investigation but his lieutenant and the higher ups had a hold on certain things but he manages to circumvent them to a point showing he’s relentless in his pursuit of justice.

Procedures are outlined and authors and readers can use what is important and imparted in investigations as a guideline to understanding how police work proceeds in this type of case.

Appearances are deceiving and perceptions clouded as truths about Tommy Plummer come to light and cover ups along with it. As his parents stand talk with the mayor and tears flow what is happening elsewhere will illuminate the truth behind the heist.

The mayor sank the police and the chief of police tried doing some collateral damage but a reporter takes the lead and things turn ugly as order was given by someone to handle the situation and eliminate the cause of Tommy’s death leaked information. Truths are hidden and the basketball team questioned and parents with varied views about Tommy. But where is his gun and where is the second robber and there’s much more to be revealed as Byron and his new partner for now Stevens try moving ahead in different directions with Stevens on the team and Byron with the evidence tech guys and then the autopsy that might reveal something unknown. But Tommy was bad news but his career was paramount and the end result was did his parents even know who he is and were they aware of his involvement with drugs. Procedures are formally outlined in detail and when attorney state investigator Lucinda Phillips questioned Haggerty we learn more about how a criminal investigation is handled and the many components. Author Bruce Coffin uses his years as a detective on the Portland police force to help readers understand the events and how they are processed and handled.

This death caused the protests and threats against the police while Byron and his team tried to sort out the evidence and information about the sneakers worn by the second robber was processed but when haggerty finished with the attorney generals investigator he was spent upset and relived the entire chase as a horrible lucid dream.

Facts about Tommy came from his teammates and drugs were sold but where did he get his supply and who was his contact? Added in why was it covered up and as one student stated who was his guardian angel?

Evidence and information comes to Byron’s attention that a young girls overdose is linked to the case he’s dealing with now. Just where they think the drugs came from and the source at which point Byron is infuriated.

As the case progresses it’s evident that events are being orchestrated to take Haggerty down for promotional purposes and some to gain publicity. Confrontations arise and the second suspect has yet to be found but Nugent the tech genius finds a link that might enlighten Byron to why Plummer had a gun but from whom and where? Someone in the department is corrupt and someone wants to cover-up the truth.

Things escalate and a visit to a prison starts a chain of revenge to take out haggerty. Plans in place and witnessed to follow but the end result brings in mobsters a vendetta and tragic ending. Added in there’s more to the original shooting and which one of the basketball players is the second robber and how will this all finally piece together. Cooperation from different houses and precincts and an old friend who betrayed Byron the ending author Bruce coffin created is electrifying and explosive.

When John goes too far and the acting chief refuses to see his side and the information he has that might clear Haggerty comes to light he’s out of the loop and Diane is asked to replace him but the bad news continues to follow.

Hoping to get a confession from the person he thinks was the second robber he’s foiled by someone in authority.

John’s world is evaporating and shrinking as the evidence is there but will anyone find the answers?

As Diane, Tran and Pelligrosso and Nugent search for answers John goes off on a bender after attending his mother’s funeral. When more evidence evolves and more suspects come to Light lies deceptions betrayals and retribution would be some of the issues that come to light as one troubled teen fights to avenge what he thinks is the death of someone close and when the events of the night Plummer was killed are revealed you won’t believe what happened, what could have prevented it and the cover-ups told all because no one wanted to go so deep to learn the meaning of what’s beyond the truth. John Byron puts it all on the line but almost like a fallen man will he be able to return again or is his career over? What about this relationship with Diane and why would LeRoyer protect him?

The news media all over it and the mayor jumping to her own conclusions plus the acting chief benching John the final face off will change it all.

The shoplifting robbery started it all the drugs in the school and the connection to the Laundromat tryout won’t believe what a web of deceit was created more deadly than that of a black widow spider as author Bruce coffin takes it up a high notch in this true to life thriller. Families are torn apart and lives never to be the same as parents need to be more vigilant and monitor their teens whereabouts friends and not lie to cover up what you will understand as Beyond the Truth.
