Island Zero: Tess Gerritsen Author
Directed by Josh Gerritsen
Imagine having your freedoms gone and the ability to leave an island. What happens on this remote island will haunt you for days after watching the events and realizing and asking yourself: Can this really happen? On this remote island off the coast of Maine the residents find themselves without any means of transportation, the ferry has not been seen for days and communications have stopped. One by one people begin to disappear as something or someone is controlling the events but who and why? This is a fishing community and they fishing stocks have gone down and eventually disappear. Why? Then something happens, and the ferry does not come, and people stand on the docks waiting and waiting and nothing happens. Food supplies are becoming scare. Attitudes are strained, and one man named Titus seems to have a handle on the situation why? He claims to be a novelist but who exactly is this man and what is he hiding?
Each person on this island has a secret they don’t want to reveal and yet they all want to get off the island why? The doctor is elusive and remains alone as Maggie which is her name, later reveals the heartache she endured losing her daughter. The Marine biologist, Sam saw something four years ago when his wife Rachel died and became fixated on trying to understand what was happening on this remote island. As the tension rises and the ferry does not show up no one is safe from whatever is hiding in the waters and is about to come out.
Titus is a novelist who is writing a book titled Island Zero, but you get the impression he too is hiding something and what is on the computer might not be what he says. Things turn dangerous as Sam’s daughter using her infrared camera allows viewers a first hand look at what is lurking in the dark waters and is about to strike but how and why?
When it finally strikes you won’t believe the devastation is does to the victim or the result of the person’s life as we also see something blue left near every dead body. As the fish in the water disappear, the ferry does not show up and two men Arthur and Henry gear up their boat, choose those that they deem worthy of leaving on it, when the rest of the residents try to communicate with them on their CB radio, the end result is shocking and what happens to them remains a mystery and unknown.
Author Tess Gerritsen and Director Josh Gerritsen created scenes that are so graphic, filled with gore that the viewer will experience what the victims to first hand. As you see the result of what this force or creatures can do you won’t believe that no one is safe from them even when those that are left move locations, find their way to a small attic and or boards up doors and windows thinking they can’t get in!
With Sam’s girlfriend, Lucy hating the island and wanting to leave and the first victims we see that are caught in the clutches of whatever it is, the viewer knows it’s just a matter of time when more deaths will occur. It’s as if the creatures choose who is next and we don’t know why? The doctor in the mean time seems to take control of the situation and the scenes in the diner become more tense and the one in the convenience store where an elderly woman takes control of a man who is hoarding all of the cans of milk, you begin to see the fear in the eyes of the residents, the chaos and the need for survival at any cost.
Everything on the island must eat: is the slogan or mantra and they won’t stop until they destroy and devour everyone and everything in sight. The characters are realistic, the young girl is quite compelling in her role and her attachment to the doctor and why became apparent later. The elderly couple in their 80’s is amazing, and the wife takes control, has a shot gun and spares no one in order to save those that are still alive.
Fear, destruction, tension, uncertainty, companionship, loyalties, trust and blind faith are just some of what is brought on in this movie filled with hope, deception, lies and deceits as all those that are left do not want to be taken as the numbers decrease and the final scenes are played you won’t believe the explosive ending and the fate of the survivors well you decide after you watch this outstanding mind provoking movie.
The residents are tired, emotional, afraid, unsure of the reasons why things are happening, the weather is freezing, the electricity is out, and food is scarce and something or someone is making it happen. Can anyone put a stop to it and can anyone communicate with it? Is there a group behind what is happening and what might still happen?
As Sam and the doctor team up to find out what is happening and goes door to door to see who is alive and who is not what they find is horrific as the bodies are unrecognizable, the blue substance is present and the final result will make you think twice before going on a vacation on a remote island realizing that your only way off is a Ferry that turns up daily but in this case when never happens.
A well casted movie with unbelievably graphically depicted scenes and characters whose emotions are so well portrayed you can feel the fear, the terror and the shock in their expressions until the final scene will leave you wondering: What’ next for the survivors?
