Rites of Passage
Things are not always what they seem and sometimes events happen that are out of your control. Thomas met Mary Harris which is not her real name and became so involved with her he never saw what was really happening until it was too late. Not realizing what she had planned for him and that slowly and methodically she was turning him into a blood thirsty and needy vampiric, Thomas does not want his family to realize his change as he refuses to eat claiming he’s not hungry, looking pale and out of sorts and wanting to go in search of this missing girl that enter his life but was now gone.
Searching was his goal but his sister Kimberly realizes something is wrong and she goes after answers but what she will learn will she accept?
Nolen is her handler and her boss as Jeannie learns something from his actions, words and abuse knowing that no one close to him was safe not her nor his precious daughter whose life he would sacrifice as part of a ritual he created. No one matters to him and when things become violent and his daughter Alecia hears the pain and screams that emit from Jeannine, she become fearful and frightened until they both make the decision to leave but will he find them? Things spiral out of control every time Jeanine thinks she is safe Nolen somehow finds her endangering not only but his daughter too, but his purpose is to kill the poor child and sacrifice her.
While he is hunting them down Thomas as disappeared from home finding himself disoriented and out of place knowing that he needs blood to survive and feed on he befriends an elderly couple where he was staying without their knowledge on part of their property but manages to convince them to not call the police but the precious dog that they owned would follow Thomas and pay the price for friendship.
Every step of the way Thomas realizes that something has changed him and that he needs to find Majken in order to survive. When she turns up at his house and meets Kimberly will they team up to try and find where he is hiding, and will his sister finally realize what happened to him as she covered the cuts on her arms and the blood found there by creating a story that she hoped her mother believed.
Sometimes people are impetus and don’t plan things out as Jeanine once again finds herself at the mercy of Nolan and must move on. Thinking going back to Charlotte was the answer and finding her father, the realization that her home was gone would decide her new destiny. A stranger claiming to run a daycare why trust her with Alecia? While Majken finds Thomas and his road to some type of recovery might begin but what about his parents and what about his sister? What will their reactions be to the truth?
Lives are in danger every time each one of these characters feed on the blood of other whether humans or animals. Does it make it right and yet they must survive? What about this young child isn’t she a victim too?
Acceptance, control, life changes and fears run through each of the minds of all the characters and yet you wonder how this young child had faith in Jeanine and realized she might be her only lifeline. But, why didn’t she question more or get upset that her own father wanted to kill her? What would happen if she came face to face with him? When someone cuts into the body of another person in order to feed on their blood is that supposed to justify their actions? What happens if the person or the animal does not survive is that not murder? Many moral and ethical issues come to mind when you hear and visualize the scenes filled with violence as each vampire executes his/her plan of attack on someone unsuspecting.
When Majken tells Thomas, he must leave his family in order to deal with his transformation and change, it is heartbreaking, but he has no choice. Kimberly, his sister shares their secret and things take on many violent turns as they both must manage to get the blood to survive and the author through Majken explains the various types of changes that each person undergoes when becoming vampyric.
Thomas is found lost and then two worlds unite as Jennie finds him and together, he and Majken along with Jennie become friends or a different kind of family unit. Jennie explains how she became involved with Nolan the part of a blood cult, how he used her to feed and the result of what she has endured plus why she took Alecia far away from him.
Nolen won’t give up, but will he track her down and what will the result be and whose fate or fates are sealed caused by the actions of others. This is a story of survival, fear, power, greed, unholy alliances, unsavory actions and two people caught up in a world that if they had the choice, they would never have wanted to be a part of or enter.
Things take on a dangerous turn when someone phones Kimberly and tells her where Thomas is located but what she needs to learn from this girl is where he is, why he is there, and she will find out he is being held captive, but will he survive what Nolen has planned for him and Jennie? Author Douglas Robinson takes us deep inside the rituals that Jennie had to unwillingly had to undergo that created her unfortunate transformation and the reasons why Thomas was undergoing their painful and possibly fatal changes too. Each transformation and each scene are graphically and vividly depicted, and the emotional upheaval of both Thomas and Jennie are realistically created and horrific to observe if the reader closes his/her eyes and visualizes what they are encountering.
Life takes on a different turn when Jennie and Thomas become captives and Nolen has done something with his own daughter. While Kimberly learns what really happened to her brother and more about the slasher will she find him in time before more than just a change occurs? A young child’s life is at stake as Kimberly hunts down Majken to find her brother but, what will happen if she did? Things take on a deadly turn as Nolen tries to fulfill his own prophesy, but will he wind up killing his own child in the end. An ending that is just the beginning for some and the author allows readers to know that there is much more to come. What will happen to Alecia? How will Kimberly and her family deal with the truth about Thomas? Is it right for people to feed on the blood of others in order to sustain life? There are many moral and ethical issues that come to light within this novel as author Douglas Robinson takes us inside the minds and actions of vampiric as they each one struggle to sustain a life that some did not warrant or ask for but have not choice but to endure. Lives are at stake, friendships are tested, and loyalties are frayed as Kimberly and Marsy hope to find Majken before Thomas is sacrificed but what about Jennie what will her fate be at the hands of someone bent on taking her life?
Characters that are realistic, flawed and yet caring for each other as Thomas fights for his life, Majken hopes to rescue him but when doing so will he survive the RITES OF PASSAGE?
