Blind spot : Brenda Novak Fear is a powerful weapon when preying on the mind of a helpless person. Courage can store and eliminate the fear is the person is willing to fight for his/her life. Evelyn Talbot at 16 suffered at the hand of Jasper Moore and the incident left remembering it years later in her nightmares. Founder and head psychiatrist at Hanover House where dangerous psychopaths are kept in this remote prison in Alaska, Evelyn thought that she did not have to watch where she was going to fear that anyone was following her until she was wrong. About to have her first child, a girl and engaged to Amarok, an Alaskan State Trooper, out of nowhere and thinking she was safe and at home she is kidnapped in broad daylight and secluded in an old cooler where her only contact is through a slot where the kidnapper puts her food and water. The people of the town of Hilltop, Alaska opposed and still do bringing these psychopaths to their town even though they were supposed securely locked up and could not get out. Despite the NIMBY attitude and the various murders, the facility and those working there were finally accept and Evelyn Talbot at that point met Alaskan Trooper Benjamin Murphy aka: Amarok and then things blossomed for both until now. Then the unthinkable happens and Evelyn is kidnapped, and Amarok faces off with Jasper Moore in prison hoping he can shed some light on where Evelyn might be. Jasper did not escape and although he is behind bars in Hanover House, he gives him the name of the person that might be responsible for her abduction but it does not process with him since this man, Lyman Bishop at this time was in the prison too. Evelyn suffered massive brain trauma and other physical injuries at the hand of Jasper but now she is pregnant and the injuries she received from her teenage abduction might endanger her ever now? The situation is grave as we find Evelyn alone in this old cooler, with nothing but a cot, a blanket and what looks like an outhouse toilet. Things get more tense when we meet her captor, Emmett who could care less at first if she starves and his treatment of her is harsh. Lyman Bishop is the man behind her abduction and wants to make sure that she pays for something from the past and he needs her to sign papers to get custody of his disabled sister and then he has an endless torture in store for her before she dies. Amarok is distraught and he has to inform her parents that she has once again be taken and the reaction is tense, harsh and the end result is they are not sure if he is the right person for her and if he can fully protect her even when and if she is found. He is driven, tired but with the help of so many people in the town, his security officer, Phil he has support and the hope of finding her is higher but meeting Lyman after he escapes, kills the janitor who made his release possible, then and learns that Emmett the man who dealt with Evelyn is also dead, he heads out, confronts her and here is where the tug of war between him and Evelyn begins. She is smart, resourceful and hopefully can find a way to escape before her child is born and before what he plans for her is accomplished. Jasper has his own problems as he becomes the object of another inmate named Roland who seems bent on taking him down due to what he did in the past to Evelyn and killing over 30 women and abusing them in unspeakable ways. The battle lines are drawn, and the tension is high as author Brenda Novak sets the bar high in this high stakes and suspense filled romance, mystery, thriller. Revenge, hate, discord, harmony, hope, retribution and a man’s love for one woman that knows no bounds. Things get even more dangerous when Lyman decides to take his landlord captive because she might suspect him and the feeling, he got places her inside the cooler along with Evelyn who wants the company, but he has other ideas for her. When Edna’s daughter Ada becomes suspicious, a Jasper is attack in the prison and sends word to Amarok to that he might know where she is, will he believe him as he is in the hospital and severely injured? Can Evelyn really rehabilitate these psychopaths? Will she continue if she is ever found? Amarok is working with Detective Lewis of the Minneapolis Police department but manages to break rules, break protocols and the result is a rift between them, and threats are flying high. Evelyn was taken and placed in Lyman’s van after he left Edna for dead. But not everything went according to plan and Evelyn was not going to be powerless and then Ada and Amarok found Edna, but will she live or not? Her injuries were extensive but calling the ambulance and then taking her to the hospital only time would tell. Edna Southwick was strong but what about Evelyn after Lyman takes her to another location, with the help of his dog, Makita and the commands that the dog would adhere to would he be able to save Evelyn before Lyman finished her off and what about the baby? Added in his mother and father seemed to reconcile as somewhat friends, Alistair just wanted to try and be a mother to him even though she chose his brother over him as a child and he was brought up by Hank his father. A story of betrayals, trust, understanding, revenge, hope, survival and one woman named Evelyn Talbot that believed that she could change the patterns of behavior of psychopaths and whose will to survive just might pull her through but will Amarok get there in time? Told through many voices and the scenes at times are graphically depicted the author created a strong character that I am sure will be back for more as we learn whether she is successful in rehabilitating so many that might not ever retain normalcy again. Strong scenes, high tension and an ending that lets you know that there is more in store for Evelyn, Amarok but what will the future hold? Fran Lewis: Just reviews
