The mystique of a house and the allure of the past brings Ava face to face with a spirit and Spector she can’t resist. Her goal to write a new cookbook but in reality she researches and questions about the man named Jeremiah Brodie who died at sea but whose spirit lives on in the house haunting her every waking moment. Ava tented the house and at first thought it did not welcome her presence but enters she smelled the salt water air from the sea and could feel a welcoming presence but at first she could not identify it. Meeting the real estate agent you get the feeling that her primary goal is getting it rented but Ava has strange experiences and even thinks that someone broke into the house and although the police could not find any real evidence she still had an uneasy feeling. Her cat Hannibal acted odd and things take on many sinister turns as you learn more about Captain Brodie, the house itself , the workers and their secrets as well as the town’s doctor whose taken an interest in Ava but why? Plus a jealous ghost whose aim is to control her at every turn but why does she submit? Things become more eerie as Ava realizes there have been a series or unexplainable deaths and her excessive drinking at times hampers her perception and thinking skills as she is writing her cookbook and meeting her deadlines. But the bodies add up and the ghost of Captain Brodie is always in her mind and the secrets of many of the villagers will shock readers. Charlotte the previous renter left in a hurry without leaving a trace of herself except for a cookbook and a scarf. Why did she leave in such haste and what secrets are hidden beneath the walls of her rented house and what are the people of this town hiding? Ava’s drinking leads you wonder if her thoughts at times are real and the house holds secrets dating back to the 1800’s and the Captain had her captivated at different intervals making her wanting his presence more than not. When Ava presses more about Charlotte we learn that the body pulled out of the bay was hers. There’s a rumor that every woman that ever lived in that house she’s rented died there . Will this make Ava leave and her visit from her publisher Simon leaves him with a nightmare he’ll never forget and leaving hoping she’d complete her work and go back home. As Ava learns more about the deaths and disappearances of several women and a family who felt a presence each one different and the police investigate Charlotte’s death which is a homicide plus suspicion falls on Ned Haskell the carpenter who worked in her house. Suspicion falls in many places and when Mauve the ghost hunter shows her pictures and articles of all of the women who lived and died in this house the link will surprise you but will Ava realize she might be in danger and leave? Ava is determined to investigate more and it leads her to the owner of the house Arthur Sherbrooke and she adds the deaths of Eugenia , Violet, Margaret and Aurora plus teenage Jesse. Writing the cookbook and adding the history of Brodie’s Watch she hopes will he owner will give her some more insight into his Aunt Aurora and her death. But he cares nothing for the house and wants to get rid of it . Plus her estrangement with her sister Lucy and her secret about Nick’s death all play parts in her actions and moods. Plus Mrs . Dickerson who runs the historical museum adding more about the women who lived there but why did they become hermits of sort? Author Tess Gerritsen takes us deep inside the spiritual world of ghosts, demons, supernatural and occult to make Ava question her own sanity and decide what’s real and what’s been super imposed to make her believe what she thinks she sees. Mauve brings her ghost hunting team and things take a more sinister turn and Dr.Gordon tells Ava about something related to the house from his past. Things spiral out of control and a hidden truth comes to light as Ava might be a killer’s next victim. When viewing what Mauve sees when filming the ghost hunting readers that believe in this will be shocked at what she reveals and a killer has been hiding in plain sight and Ava has to face the truth about herself, her guilt and learn forgiveness but will she? An ending so startling and a house that casts its own spell when you visit Tucker Cove would you want to go inside Brodie’s watch and meet the Shape of the Night? Fran Lewis just reviews
