A minute to midnight

A minute to midnight

Within her memories of the past Attlee Pine has visions about the night her sister was kidnapped, and she was brutally assaulted. Nightmares plague her even during the day and now as an adult and FBI agent she can’t shake the feeling that something was missed, that her sister ,Mercy is out there and answers and closure is what she will hunt for as the clues mount up but the solutions do not.

Going back to her childhood home, asking to see her old room helps generate visions of what happened but not clearly. Talking to old friends of her parents and learning more about what they were doing that night that might have detracted their attention and hampered them from hearing the movement in her room or the pleas to leave them alone as the were drunk and stoned. Guilt you a point but when Attlee and her assistant, Blum decide to investigate things take on an even more sinister turn as another murder happens in front of her, the detective in charge requests her help and things that are in front of them might not be exactly what they view.

Things take on a deadly turn when another body is discovered draped over a grave of a Union Soldier and Attlee wants to be part of the investigation but this time her bureau is called in and the stakes are higher and someone she has a history with us now in Andersonville. Added in after talking to Myron Pringle she learns about her parents past that was never told to her before and the truth behind her father’s suicide and her mother’s disappearance m. She has no idea where she is but learning more about her and Blum manages to get a picture of her parents plus her and Mercy before she was kidnapped, sends her in many different directions but there are two murders to solve . The girl was a prostitute, and little was found about her: no phone records, no family only what her roommate told her, and both used drugs.

Then the unthinkable happens and they learn more about the second victim that was into making porn films and that links him to Hanna and Beth her roommate who is victim 3. But the author brings us back to the reason she came to Andersonville and that’s her sister’s disappearance and learning more about her father and a man named Barry Vincent said to have had an argument with him before he died with Agnes Ridley. . The plots go back and forth, and Pine seems to have to change gears quickly and then Lauren Graham wants her to talk about her cases for her new novel and sharing information might help her with her sister’s.

Things get more sinister when the next victim is a ten-year-old child dressed in a uniform from the museum. Added in Pine learns more about the night she was attacked, and her sister was taken surmising that she was the loser and her sister the winner could she still be alive and where? What about her mother and why did she break her nightly routine?

With her attractive to FBI agent Laredo coming on strong, Wallis the local cop trying to fit pieces together and then digging into her parent’s pasts that if the first three vials now the fourth, Pine seems to be torn in many directions but will she ever find a direct path to Mercy?

Author David Baldacci keeps the pace moving in many directions as Pine tries to figure out the link between all the murder victims and what this ten-year-old has to do with the others who were porn stars. What about his parents and why haven’t they called the police for a missing child?

Electrifying, tension filled, conflicts and pasts collide as Pine and Blum hope to learn more about what people know about her parents and catch this unique and creative killer before he/ she strikes again.

As the pieces formulated an intricate plot Pine realized that the killer was hiding in plain sight. Motive ten million dollars and the hidden reason centered around the actors in the porn films and one poor drug user that got in the way. Lies, betrayals, greed, murder, retribution, avenging deaths, unanswered questions, a veil, a tux, a museum uniform, a confederate uniform and a plan so intricate that it took Pine a while to break it opened but the ending is shocking as Cy Tanner’s granddaughter’s life hangs by the balance and Pine and Laredo lose a person on their team but the life of this child has to come first before any mourning can take place. But the final scene and the revelation she learns will set her on a quest for more answers and hope to find Mercy

Pine and Laredo team up with Wallis once again as Jenny’s life is at stake as she will be victim number five if she does not piece it together. But, one clue comes to mind and a simple word starts her off in a direction where there is no one watching this killer and the reference is perfect. Characters that are strong, Pine who is relentless and Andersonville, under siege if she does not stop this one person that is so greedy for money and another who wants to eliminate someone close to her. But, when the race is on, the expensive cars taking the road which one will soar? Which one will crash and who will the final winner be or is there one in this case? Serious issues come to light as you read the final few pages and realize that Mercy is still out there, but Pine has a new lead and the race and search will continue until she learns the final fate of her sister.

. As the clock moves and the day is about to end and the re-enactment is winding down the final scene will leave you spellbound, on the edge of your seat and waiting for the final shoe on the other foot to fall. Watch the clock because everything might happen as the clock ticks down and strikes: A minute before midnight
