Dirty old town: Gabriel Valjan

Brash , brazen, crass at times and unorthodox, Shane Cleary is far from your ordinary PI. Everyone wants him gone from the police want him to permanently disappear yet he’s straightforward, honest and seriously broke. Why not take on a case of blackmail? How can he resist the huge payout? The client is disreputable, and his wife is someone he sees on the sly. Then he’s asked to find a missing person named Roger for a fellow veteran and cop. But this sets off a chain of events that leads him to dangerous territory and having to run for the hills as he’s attacked, threatened and chased down . The time period is the 70’s and the net is not even in the picture. Shane needs to get a job after failing as a Boston cop. During this time period many issues come to light like a close friend of his who is gay , racial tensions and understanding the differences between the difference Irish sects: shanty and lace curtain Irish. Dealing with his father’s suicide and taking on the blackmail case of his ex- girlfriend’s husband who raised her economic station marrying this man but is she happy. After all he’s not faithful nor is she. Life is hard and not always positive. His most loyal being is his dog Delilah and friend and relationships are few.   1. This was the first book I read by this author and will be looking for more of his work since I enjoyed his writing style.
