A venomous Love
Imagine being robbed at gun point that would be traumatic and the result could be fatal. The year is 1890 and the setting is London as fear reigns in the hearts and minds of the public when a dangerous thief, hired by an unscrupulous person looking to eliminate someone in order to profit from the death, sends a lethal adversary as the weapon. The choice of weapon to get his victims to give him what he wants is a cape cobra venomous snake that when biting a person, the end might take time, but the result is death by venomous poison.
We meet several victims as Delilah the snake bears her ugly head and lethal tongue while Kip her handler maneuvers her in such a way the victims give in a run their lives. Reporting the robbery, we meet Detective Ruddy Bloodstone and his partner Archie Holbrook. Interviewing the victims yielded a sketch of the thief and the hope of catching him but not before he strikes again but this time one unintended victim dies. Honor is Underhill was out with her father when this attack occurred. Even with some efforts by the staff of a children’s hospital he could not be saved. Honoria is out of sorts but when you get to know her better you realize she is quite tough in her own way. Brazen, hardheaded and seriously having a mind of her own, when her Uncle Aaron demands she stay with him and his awful wife, the discussion got heated and she thought about hiring or bribing two constables for protection.
Will Bloodstone is Ruddy’s brother and due to an injury discharged from the military and searching for work. Needing something to do and wanting employment, he interviews for the post of guarding Honoria with another man he recommends. This will prove to be a great challenge as someone close to her wants her gone but the person who he is in debt to have his own mode of persuasion.
The medical examiner’s report has yet to be revealed as death by poisoning or heart attack. Yet there is a reporter that wants the exclusive rights to this story when it comes out, but will he honor the agreement with the police?
Going to the zoo they learn they are not missing a snake but are given the names of traffickers that might know something or be involved.
Then they are called once again to question another victim with four bite marks and this incident was at the museum gardens once again and hoping to yield some information, they questioned the museum guards. Extra guards are needed but there is more behind these attacks and Honoria is far from safe.
Tensions rise but when they questioned her again a simple facial change in two places might help catch this man, but will that stop what someone else has planned?
Author Kris Karlsen presents readers with an unusual murder weapon but nonetheless deadly. No antidote to counteract the venom it is a death sentence.
The Cape Cobra also known as the yellow cobra is a modest sized highly poisonous species of snake. It lives in different biomes across Southern Africa including armed savanna , desert and semi-desert regions. The venom is potent and is thick and syrupy and dries into shiny pale flakes not unlike yellow sugar. Back when and where this novel takes place there was no cure but in the present the victim would need antivenom. But death as the author relates can take from an hour to ten hours or more as a result of respiratory failure due to onset of paralysis. Hopefully, the victim will get the antivenom but not those in this novel as Bloodstone and Holbrook will face more obstacles including Scotland Yard taking their case if they do not catch the killer.
There is more as they go to an exclusive club to interview her brother Prentiss who is gambling debts are huge and get bigger even after they are paid off.
A tug of war between Scotland Yard and the police will decide who gets to keep the case and author Kris Karlsen allows Ruddy to share with his girlfriend and readers his nightmares through vivid flashbacks. But after revisiting Honoria he devised a plan that might reveal who is behind the attempts on her life but where is the thief?
Lives are hanging in the balance and Ruddy and Archie are about to face off with a dangerous killer.
The final reveal and final scenes will make you wonder just how far Bloodstone and Holbrook will bend the rules to take down not only the killer but the one behind the attempts on Honoria. Added in the smugness of the prisoner and an ending you will not expect.
The final outcome of the prisoner is in the hands of someone sinister but the final reveal about Honoria leads readers to believe that there’s more of her to come as Will and Curry his partner opened a protection business and hope to provide needed security for people in danger until the suspect is caught but Honoria well you have to read the ending for yourself. She is unorthodox, bold, opinionated and stubborn as the author draws the novel to a close but beware. The title has multiple meanings as a venomous love is what the killer felt for Delilah in an odd way. A brother who hated his sister is venomous and his love poisonous and a love gone bad fits it too. Be careful and cautious you too can become prey to A venomous Love if you are not careful.
