Searching for someone for over 30 years has been the main goal of Atlee Pine. Hoping to finally find out what really happened to her twin sister she has been obsessed with nothing else for so long. As an FBI agent Atlee Pine has resources that she hopes will help her find Mercy. But she foils a military operation set up by investigator John Puller, on a high stakes case, she is caught in a web of global conspiracy which will hopefully not take them both down. Uncertainties plagues her as she remembers exactly the time and moment this happened and although her superiors want her to stop the investigation there is something that is driving her forward. A possible breakthrough and the identify of her sister’s kidnapper, Ito Vincenzo comes to light and she is determined along with her assistant Carol Blum to track him down to his last known location, Trenton, New Jersey while colliding with Puller’s case and blowing an arrest during a drug ring investigation involving a military installation. Partnering up with him in a joint effort to uncover a connection between Vincenzo’s family and a plot that strikes at the heart of our democracy around the world. Will she be able to learn the truth about her sister? When she does if she does will she be able to handle it?
Atlee is persistent and will not give up until she finds out what really happened to her sister but since she foiled the drug bust she has in her own mind an obligation to John Puller to find out who is behind the drug ring. Jerome Blake is dead and supposedly killed by a cop but was it really an officer? Jeff Sands is her next lead and she and John find him but before they can hear more about what he was into, even though he was a college student whose family had the money to get him into school and more, he is killed even though John and Pine were protecting him. With Robert a Colonel in the army now on their team and still hoping to find Tony Vincenzo, lives are still at stake, and John is seriously injured in the hospital. With Carol at her side and knowing that her real father Jack Lineberry was on her team to a point will she find her sister, and will she stop this drug ring before more lives are lost?
Atlee tracks down two guys Bill Danforth and Phil Cassidy who managed to have charges lowered using Article 15 even though she realizes that they were partners and working with Tony. Tom Whitaker is their JAG lawyer, and he acts defensive and says when the big guys talk he just listens. CWO John Puller is working with her and they seem to start to understand her motives, their options and they present her with their photos, but will this end what is happening and will she find Tony? Double Jeopardy does not apply between military and civilian prosecutions. The Army cutting a deal with these two has not impact on the FBI going after them she explains. The only difference is that they will spend time in a maximum-security prison. As she explains how John got shot up when Sands was killed.
Evidence comes to light and truths about government involvement and she learned that Ito Vincenzo had gotten into a fight with her own father the next day and then Mercy her sister was taken. All through the investigation about Tony Vincenzo and the drug ring her mind at times reverted to her sister. But Tony was found, someone was behind what he attempted to do and then things spiral out of control Linsey Axilrod posed as an IT person in a high-powered position and Tony was working with her but when Pine confronts them both what happens is a duplicate of the same thing that happens each time she finds a witness to stop the drug ring, undercover more players and then someone pays the price for talking to her. Adam Gorman and Nora Franklin were key players and both in powerful positions and Atlee was going to take them down, but something happens that will shock readers. Confronting Tony and then Lindsay the result is one more person eliminated by the clean up group that Lindsey created. In between she learned that her sister was given to a family by the name of Atkins but that was a temporary stop gap and when we learn the truth chills will run down your spine as what she uncovers and learns will attack her core. Truths, lies, betrayals and the government finally issuing warrants to take down what Gorman and Franklin two powerful people created and kept going. But, when Pine finds out who took her sister, learned more about the family and then goes to the house where she was kept and a VCR tape reveals it all the result leads her to someone close to her, finding out the truth about her parents and then seeing a face from the past but where is she now?
An ending that leaves us wondering if she and Mercy will ever come face to face. The horrors and pain inflicted on her and author David Baldacci once again leaves us in suspense as Atlee Pine cannot reconcile the truth, someone she thought she could trust lied all those years and a simple date brings it out into the open and perhaps the darkness will fade and soon she will be able to see clearly in the DAYLIGHT!
