Infinite: Brian Freeman

If Rod Serling was alive today he would be in awe of author Brian Freeman and how he created a story worthy of an episode of the Twilight Zone. Dylan Moran is living in a parallel universe but has no idea that he is. Living in another world he will enact events that will haunt him in the present and erased from his mind never knowing what to expect, where or when.

Dylan has anger management issues, and he drinks to excess as we learn through him when he explains his problems when law enforcement gets involved. Dylan met his wife after having an altercation that left him in a poor physical state and Karly, that he just met, took him to the hospital, stayed with him, listened to his problems and then nursed him back to health in her own home. One thing led to another , she worked for Chance reality owned by her mother and was hoping to live up to her standards and become a great seller of reality. But Dylan had issues throughout their marriage, and dealing with his anger, the violence and at times the attack on others would come back and haunt him long after what happens when he and Karly are riding, not speaking, she just explained an affair she had with another man, trying to salvage their marriage but instead he was driving stewing all the way. The car found itself at the end of a cliff or ravine, went over into the raging water and then both went under. He was able to pull himself out and climb up the trunk of a tree but realizing she was still in the water he did go back to pull her out, but the current was too strong, and she was gone. Forgiveness is not one of his virtues and the author takes us back to where and how they met, what happened to his parents and how his father and mother argued and how his father ended both of their lives and Dylan as a child who witnessed it did not try and stop his father from taking his own life.

In the present events reflected from the past come to the present but when the car was sinking, and he looked up into the woods there was a man there that he hoped would help him but that man on the outside was him. How could that be? The author weaves a story so deep, dark and deceptive that no one even the reader knows what to believe. Dylan sees himself more than once even looking outside of his hotel room where he is the manager and needed time to unwind. He is seeing himself but is it really him?
Tia his assistant is handling a major event and she seems to be wanting more than just friendship. Going down to the ballroom he meets the person who is running this event dealing with parallel universes and lives that you lived before and maybe even after. You get an eerie feeling, and the man is there or maybe not until a voice answers him when he asks why you are here: TO KILL!

Dylan falls and plunges into different visions that he has and then she begins to experience sudden changes, visions, sees himself as different people and then thinks he is having a mental issue or breakdown. Dylan runs into a psychiatrist who claims he was undergoing hypnotherapy based on an idea that he created an infinite number of parallel universes with many carbon copies and different of him. His worlds unlock and unleash, and his doppelganger has taken over his world and Dylan must find a way to take these alternate realities and get back the life that belongs to him. Dylan finds himself caught in a catch 22 situation as he thinks that he sees himself and finds himself meeting with an old friend only to learn that the police think he killed him. Added in they come to talk to him, but he escapes and find the psychiatrist who uses special drugs to take him to different places, parallel universes where he meets himself in many different forms, sizes and reminds readers of the deaths of his parents, living with his grandfather who now has some form of dementia and then finds himself in places that he has been with him too.

Deciding to attempt to go to the other parallel worlds sent Dylan on a journey he would never forget and maybe never come back from Finding his grandfather and then learning that he was married to Tai his assistant shocked him as the real Dylan Moran she married was not him. A change of personality, a dangerous situation as four women were murdered, and a detective was determined to pin it on him. Then finding his friend Roscoe alive, telling him the story and hoping to find Karly his encounter with her is chilling, the poems she wrote mirrored what happened to her in a car accident that killed her mother and each time he sank deeper and deeper into another world knowing that his doppelganger was out there, following him and killing anyone in his wake.
When leaving his apartment and trying to reconcile with her and finding himself in more than one parallel world. Tai was his wife, but someone had other plans for her and when he returned to his apartment his doppelganger was there and the harsh reality of what he did comes full circle. Not only that he recounts what happens to their father and that he took aim at the man, killed him when this Dylan could not to avenge his mother’s death. Dylan finds himself living in many worlds and relives experiences that he remembers and yet never feels he really belongs anywhere. Determined to kill his doppelgänger and create a safer place for all the Dylan’s left, what he experiences will leave him in limbo in many respects, finding his friend Roscoe alive living a different life and yet still experiencing the Many Worlds and parallel worlds where he and others were living different lives. But nothing was real and yet in one universe he meets Karly again; finds his family and realizes he is not her Dylan, yet a haunting voice tells him she is still here. Guided by the fact he was sent back to these places when he awakens and finally says the key word to return Infinite: he is where it began in Eve Brier’s office but still what is real, what is an illusion as author Brian Freeman masterfully creates an ending that will take your breath away, enduring the pain, the depth of the event and the outcome of where Dylan winds upon, what world and where. But some ending will find closure but this one will leave you will uncertainties, fears, chills and wondering is the nightmare over? Who is real, what’s reality there are many roads to follow in life as Dylan Moran takes in many roles, works in different walks of life learning that there are limitless possibilities like the universe which is endless or Infinite!

Meeting Karly Chance the author, who wrote Portal a book of somber and tragic poems he immediately connected with her and shared the fact that maybe there was a connection added in he revisits Roscoe and then things get tense, the doppelganger kidnaps him, and will he ever return to any world that he belongs?

The next time you stare at your face in a mirror make sure you know who is looking back at you or just say Infinite!
