Call me Elizabeth Lark

Can your past come back into your present when you realize your only change of escape is to change who you are and pretend to be someone you are not” Would you take the life of someone in your own defense and leave the person for dead to save yourself and your child? Your sister was watching you and decided it was more important to give her attention to her boyfriend. She left you and wandered away leaving you alone and afraid. That night two people disappeared : Charlotte Barkley and Jared Henderson. Guilt plays a huge part in this novel when Elizabeth Lark appears at the home of Myra and Herb Barkley and what transpire will shock these two people to the core. Is this the daughter that went missing so many years ago? Why did she turn up at the Bed and Breakfast they owned ? What happened to the missing daughter and where has she been for over 20 years? Added in there is a necklace that Charlotte the missing sister, now claiming to be Elizabeth was wearing when she disappeared. She claims to be Elizabeth lark and the parents who have been mourning and grieving are hoping that she finally returned. Gwen was supposed to watch her sister, Charlotte but was busy with Jared Henderson. Just what happened to her will not be revealed until 20 years later when a woman named Elizabeth shows up with her five-year-old son, Theo and ethe events that happen will strike more than just a difficult note with Myra, Gwen and the entire family. As Gwen relives the night of her sister’s disappearance, Elizabeth relives for readers her life with Peter or was that his real name? Taking his life was to save her own and her son’s and living in the inn with Myra would bring danger, fear and possibly another death or kidnapping into the life of the Barkley family.

Gwen was a cold child when relating to her mother and Herb was the one person she gravitated to until he decided to leave. Myra was obsessed with her missing daughter and most of the 20 years thought that she saw some girls that could be her, false alarms was Elizabeth her Charlotte? When her security system is hacked, someone slashes her paintings, someone is trying to take her life what is the reasons behind it? A photo of Charlotte is destroyed, another is taken, and someone is working hard behind the scenes to take apart this family but why? The darkness is so dense and the fears high as we get to know more about Elizabeth, who she really is and why she decided to come back to where she lived as a child. Lives are at stake, betrayals and deceptions are at the heart of this novel as one thing is apparent nothing and no one are what they appear to be.

The story continues to unfold with events revealed from the past as this woman not only destroys the closeness and the family but in a sense she might have brought them back together again. When the truth about Elizabeth becomes known because DNA does not lie, Myra must look herself in the mirror, openly tell the truths that have been lying dormant for so long and decide for herself whether to explain, whether to continue to make excuses for her actions or confront her worst fears once and for all.

Each time things get tense and Elizabeth feels the walls closing in her method of survival is to leave and find somewhere else to go. Alice is her link to helping her find a safe place but someone that has been hiding in plain sight knows where she is, has unraveled what Myra has hidden all those years and then before the final curtain falls on this family and destroys them you will not believe what is revealed. Pasts come back to haunt in the present and one night that Gwen spent with her boyfriend will haunt her memories forever. Is she responsible for the disappearance of her sister, Charlotte? Why can’t she bond with her mother and what about her brother? Why is it that this family cannot come together in love and with warmth?
It is about the necklace and how the same person has both halves. Just how did this person get the necklace? Will the truth come out and who is responsible for what happened to Charlotte and what would have happened if this one person had told the truth and come forward before it was too late?
Detective Sarah Marlowe is at the heart of this case trying to put the fragmented pieces together to make this family whole if that is possible. An ending that is shocking, a truth about who is behind the terror attacks on this family and how it is linked to the past you will not believe. When the weapons are drawn and lives are at stake and once again this family is placed in the hands of a kidnapper, will Cora and Savannah, Gwen’s girls suffer at the hand of this person? What about Theo and his need for some mental health specialist to deal with his fears? Author Melissa Colasanti takes us on roller coaster ride that is nonstop from start to finish as we visit the Inn, meet the family and get to know the truth behind one night on the beach.
