How will he get to safety? The path to safety was anything but safe when the helicopters arrived which one would take him to safety, and which wanted him dead? Escaping the mountainside death trap[ was only the start as the events that follow will take him to many places, dealing with numerous assassins and foes and leading him to a Russian Oligarch handed Koslov who wanted him gone but why? Trust coms at a high price and the suspect list grows as we learn more about those that work for the agency, those that have his back and others that might be helping the Russians and then eliminated CIA field officers. Jake is required to check in with his boss Ted Graves for a meeting about what he’s been up to and what happened when the plane crashed but instead his deputy Christine is there, and you get a sense of uncertainty when you meet her. As a member of the CIA’s Special Activities Center which is an elite group led by Ted Graves things transpire in this unit that are high profile and different.. Surviving the crash put him on the radar of Russian Oligarch Nicolai Kozlov who wants him dead since targeting a national leader for assassination and Jake needs to be eliminated first. The number of CIA operatives that have been killed are part of operations led by his friend Jeff, Clap, his mentor and Ian Hunter. Someone is working for the other side and now he must convince the others there might be a mole in the organization, there is someone out to get him and the Russian Oligarch has made him his primary target.
We learn about the men whose lives were lost, Jeff talks about 14 months before when the organization had two veteran paramilitary operations s officers in the country between Damascus and Aleppo in the city of Homes. The two guys were deep over case officers as detailed into the situation on the ground and what happens is not unusual. The French DGSE had a source inside Assad’s organization, and the result was they burned people hacked off pieces of their bodies and worse. The two paramilitary officers figure out how ruthless the death wars were two hours after they arrived in Syria. In the end the decision was made not to
Peter Clements is the chief of the station in London and Jake’s first boss. He is his mentor and needs him when things get tense to sort things out remembering that he was once Zack Miller and had to change his appearance and more to survive. But, even more difficult is the fact that he has no memory of the plane crash or what happened. He has amnesia. The crash investigations were carried out by killed investigator in aviation experts. They have assumed a stream deal and to present him from reaching Courchevel which meant they were trying to protest someone or something even more valuable in alpine village. But Jake did not know what? The characters share their missions from the past, why they remain and you understand their loyalty and why Jake has faith in these men.
The dangers come when he does not expect them, and Jake realizes that he is a target, and his safety and life is always in danger. Even living in a barn and coming home to staying in a hotel leads him to realize that he can never let his guard down and needs to assess the situation before entering anywhere.
The author shares the voices of the Russians who want to take out the national leader and we learn about his men, their methods and someone hiding in plain sight that he calls the Shadow. But Misha seems like he can handle it all until he cannot, added in he has three men called The Triplets that at times carry out their mission and others fall over their own feet leaving the oligarch to hopefully find someone to do it all.
Added in we meet Genevieve the woman he fell for before he had to change his appearance and hoping she will understand and resume some type of relationship, but trust is hard for her and they develop a working one since she has access to files, technology and more that can hopefully help him take down the person that is after him and the leader.
Things got even more tense when Jake was falling and had the feeling of weightlessness and he and Genevieve were on speaking terms, but things would not be safe. The Russians exited the terminal in Dallas and rented a ford pickup. Misha and Kozlov’s were envious about Jake learning the information from Shadow their own experience with the CIA military office makes them wary. Things changes, equipment needed and the had a plan, but would they succeed.
The action picks up and spirals into final scenes that will keep the reader spellbound and wondering if Jake will survive.
Jake uncovers something about an agent that he thought was dead shocks him and takes him on a roller coaster ride to find out more.
