The Society of Necessities
Would you like to live forever? Immortality would be great if it did not come at the risk of others wanting what you have found and endured? Even if those close to you did not live the hundreds or more years as you did, and others close to you would you still covet the prize of long life? Daniel St. Croix is hit by a truck and thought dead until he was not. How could he regain his life when everyone thought and saw that he was gone? Daniel had something that others want and that is the core of this story. His girlfriend Devi, and his mother Vivianne reveal the truth about the man he thought was his grandfather. Finding their way to the estate in Quebec City, the story takes on many colors and the author takes us back in time to learn the truth about his father, Pierre, why he was immortal for so many years and how he meets two important figures in his life.
Pierre has left him his journals which date back centuries and reveal how he is tied to the French Court of Louis XVI. Three things were given to him one a ring made of a specific metal that has the powers to keep him alive forever. But there is a society both in the past and the present called the Society of Necessities whose members will stop at nothing to get what he has found the ring and its powers.
Meet the men after Daniel and that’s to get the ring and take him out. If they don’t the rule is in this society they take you out. When Daniel learns the truth about Pierre his father he goes on a quest to learn about his history, his past and what he finds out astounds him. Daniel must escape first from the hospital and then from these men as they are after him and what his father found years ago.
Learning about his father who was a businessman and a thief which hits home even with Daniel, and we meet Robert and Yvette who become part of Pierre’s life in the past and Daniel’s in the present. People have been fascinated with living longer and in the present it is no different. But Pierre and Yvette and Robert are the key to what happens throughout this novel[fl1] . Imagine a metal that is so powerful that it is used to make rings and as it ages and turned into pendants this metal allows someone wearing it to live a long life. Taking the reader back in time we read his father’s journal and we learn the path to immortality and the fact that he hopes he will follow him and honor his request. Next we learn that he rings, and the metal are linked to Egyptian hieroglyphics and that it would be a fitting engagement to make three rings one for him, the father, one for his fiancé and one for Robert.
The metal if at the core of this novel it is a special metal and when Pierre has it split into three rings the story takes off when we learn about his wife Joelle and what happens to her wondering why he did not put the ring on her hand to bring her back to life. Pierre in more recent years found the power within eh metal comes from which is a low dose of radioactivity and you won’t believe the powers it had or where they say this metal comes from. Both journeys are described in flashbacks from the past to the present as Daniel, Devi his mother, Robert and Yvette retrace Pierre’s steps and find themselves hunted by the same people that hunted him in the past. Each time we meet Blackie and his men they are frustrated and worried what will happen if they fail. Meeting the two people that helped him and Josette his wife that ran a pension and the way he treated them and what he asked of them in the future endears you to Pierre.
In the present Daniel tries to deal with his father’s shortcomings, his life and without Robert in the present he was not often centered and under control He is truly a mentor and good friend. The chapters with the journal history, the people that Pierre meets, what happens when they cross him, and the result will keep readers mesmerized and glued to the printed page from start to finish. Learning about Rameses the god and his part in the history and how Rameses told him that the crystal was rare but form the hearth and imagine that it has healing, and telepathic properties needed to balance the power of the dull gold and even more the person will become immortal. But there is another artifact that comes into play and is vital to what happens to the entire cast of characters and the gold wedding band and its powerful secret. The key to the long dead Egyptian pharaoh, and one more artifact that will tie it all together for him to get what was left for him what is attached to his inheritance. The final scenes are compelling, and you want to learn the truth behind the one thing that Daniel finally received, the gold women together and what the ends and what they are attached to and what they mean. What about Devi will she remain with him and if he is immortal what about her? An ending that will shock readers and a twist and surprise that author Christopher Bowron throws that intertwines the past and the present and you won’t believe the shocking revelation. Some endings bring things to a conclusion but this one makes you wonder what is still in store for Daniel and the rest of the characters and the those in the Society of Necessities. The journal is read, the facts are revealed, and you the reader will want to learn more as Daniel has his ring, the other artifacts are hopefully safe, and the ending leaves you wondering is this over? The Society of Necessities; would you join it knowing what they require and what happens if you fail? Characters that are well defined, a plot that keeps you glued as there are many subplots too and this author has created a unique and powerful novel which asks the question: HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO GET IMMORTALITY AND AT WHAT PRICE?
You want to read this you won’t be disappointed.
