The Shadow

The Shadow

The year is 2087 and the world is no longer the way you would remember it today. However, thinking about the present protests in Cuba and the lack of medical care, food and places to live including many that are unemployed the authors have created a world that just might mirror what might happen in the future. People lack food, there is a world president that is insane and added in a scientist that is experimenting with different poisons to kill off people and animals.
Flashback to 1937 and meet Lamont Cranston and his girlfriend Margo who are out to dinner but will never realize that they are now part of the experiment in the future. A man named Khan made sure they were poisoned but somehow Cranston managed to drive to his warehouse and what happens flashes us forward once more to the future.

As the story opens we meet Maddy sitting in class with a teacher in a world where questions are not welcome, behaviors are monitored and request to leave the room are handled by guards. Behaviors of any kind that are not acceptable are severely punished. Maddy is about to prove what happens when determination and the use of mind control can alter a situation in your favor. As the guard become in her power and she manages to cut out of school she heads for the office of a lawyer named Poole who will send her on the first leg of a series of events that will take bring back the past into the present as 1937 enters 2087and the intrigue and suspense begins. Maddy is of the age of majority in New York meeting all the general obligations, section one, domestic relations, second two public health law and section two-five -Zero-four. Meeting Poole was an experience as she was about to learn just what her inheritance was and how it would change the dynamics of her life.

Meet the two councilwomen that should have been more careful before meeting in the World President’s residence. Maria Fernandez and Aida Almasi as all citizens want food and want to be able to enjoy life but the reasons for their visit was to discuss business but not before serving them what they would soon be their last meal and end their lives.

Meet Maddy as she enters the warehouse where Lamont was last seen and meets Julian Fletcher who will explain how she inherited a body and just who this person was. Frozen, needed to be decelerated and they used the method of freezing his body and brain what happens next will astound readers as the person comes back to life.

Just why did she get custody of Lamont Cranston and just who was he in relation to her? His reaction to the world is unusual and who he is might surprise you. But, at the World President’s Residence we meet Sonor Breece, chief of staff who has in front of him the two councilwomen that are now dead and was  going to use his instruments to learn more about what is inside of them. What exactly is his goal is horrific and what exactly is he going to use the information for? A world that is filled with no hope, caring and despair, and people suppressed and warned that if they deter or break a rule they will be hauled off in a bus by the guards to prison and their lives over. Freedom is precious will these people ever uprise?
Lamont Cranston is his name, and he is from the past. But, when he realizes where he is he wants to know where Margo Lane is and now the fun starts. He is bent on exploring where he is, he looks around and cannot believe the deterioration of the world, the horrific smells and appearances of the people and how terrible they are dressed and looked. Never would he believe what happened to the world, the government and  we  learn that he just might be the character on the radio: THE SHADOW! Lamont there are no kings, queens, prime minsters or anyone else but one man in power. The police are not police they are something else and suspects, strays and violators are round up and the result you won’t believe. Fact checks as Maddy explains the whole story about the warehouse, Fletcher, the lab and Lamont waking up and asking for Margo. The fact that he has been in a coma for 150 years is mindboggling. The fact that he can assimilate in this one amazing.

It’s not just about Lamont and finding Margo and learning about the new world and how to overcome what Khan the world supreme president has done to him and so many others. It’s a cry for freedom, the desperation of people that are oppressed and the fear to fight for the food, medical care and necessities of life they need. We meet Jessica who is strongminded and Maddy’s grandmother who fights for her own safety, has limited food and who Lamont has taken on as his own and what he attempts to do for both her and Maddy places everyone in danger. Added in the humor, slapstick and the hidden powers trying to elude the president and his men as Lamont is caught several times, but author James Patterson and Brian Sitts have found unique and unusual ways for him to deal with his opposition. The story continues with many encounters between Lamont, the guards and how Maddy must focus and deal with helping him find Margo and when they do the revelation is startling and bringing her into the story makes it even more interesting as she too if a force to be dealt with and more.

As they try to find a safe place to live and deal with the opposition the World President and Breece are setting up another occasion to take out more of the population hoping to increase the death toll when they pretend to allow the people to celebrate the one day they are allowed to speak out, have food and enjoy life until the scientist hopes to silence them.

The final scenes are filled with action and suspense that are not quite the same as in other mystery thrillers as Lamont just might be somewhat like or even the Shadow on the radio show able to solve cases the this is more about the freedom of the people, the hope for the future and the answers to why Maddy became his guardian you might say. We get to know Margo and we realize how she and Lamont came to be part of Maddy’s life and her grandmother’s too, but we also learn the fact that the World President may or may not have achieved his goals and they might think they are safe but are they?

Does the Shadow Live? Does he have new talents that allow him to take on the many forces he faces? Khan is dangerous and unleashes firepower that could knock our more than a street or city or more. An ending you won’t expect, and the final scenes filled with explosive action, tensions and characters that are unique to any mystery, unusually cast and two authors that make you realize that if we don’t come together and work as one in this world think about what would happen if we lived in the one they created. To all those countries where people are fighting for freedom and their rights I dedicate this review to you and hope that your voices are strong and will be heard. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? THE SHADOW KNOWS AND POSSIBLY LAMONT CRANSTON !
