Can a young preteen outfox her whole family and convince them she wants to learn about her Mexican heritage to get out of being punished for pulling pranks in school and on her brother? Harper convinces her mother, father and grams that going to Mexico to mee4t her family and learn about her heritage is the way to go. So, off they pack, travel and immediately have a confrontation with her Tio and his family sending them to a hotel, but this is where things get odd. Her mother disappears and is nowhere to be found nor is she on the registration form of the hotel. What happened to her? Harper gets a job at the snack bar in the hotel and then she is kidnapped and forced to become a spy. What is going to happen to her? What happens when her father realizes she is missing too>? Finding herself with other young people that are spies in training Harper gets tangled up with Savannah but what is the principal of her school doing there? Why is she called an anti-spy and where is her mother? Who is Willow and what does Savannah know about her mother? Is she really the head of this spy company? Harper gets taken, punched around but there is much more beneath what we have already scene and what is the real purpose of this spy company? Who is George and why is she told not to cross him?
Harper gets caught up in tricky situations and when Savannah tries to reveal hidden truths will she believe her? Why is Willow against her and what are the gadgets that both sides have? Why does she get blindsided so often? What is the real motive behind why she was kidnapped? What about her mother? In fighting, accusations and suspicions all around just what is behind this Spy agency and what is their real motive for kidnapping Harper? The battles between Willow, Harper and Savannah are quite unique and wild as both sides get injured, Willow wants Harper’s help, but she has yet to reveal why. Added in why does she have to pretend to be destroyed and dead?
What does this have to do with her Mami? Who is the real force behind these events? Willow had to make sure her father got Harper’s DNA to track down her mother but the same time she was crossing over to phase two of becoming a spy. Fighting, gadgets they did unusually odd things, two tweens that would use ways to outfox each other and then the final revelation and showdown. Authors Laila Claiborne and Kallie Harris created Harper Ellison in the true spirit of a spunky , clever and smart tween who uses her common sense at times, instinct and compassion plus ability to stretch the truth to hopefully bring down and stop what is happening to her and learn the truth about her mother.
Throughout the novel there are many emotional changes that both Willow and Harper go through. Even though they appear at times to be at odds with each other Willow seems to be following orders from her father and hopes that she can do what is expected of her in order to get Harper to become a spy. What Harper experiences at times is pain, strange and odd feelings and given food that she was not sure was safe at times and rooms that needed to be fumigated and more. Imaginations run wild. Tempers flare, fears come in handy and tenacious, spunky and smart Harper will endear you to her as in some respects so will Willow but where is Savannah?
The ending leaves you wondering what’s next? Taken from her home, thrown into wild and crazy sit, wanting answers, mixed up in the havoc and trying to figure out what’s next, Harper needs to understand the dynamics between Willow and her father and where this will finally go. The final chapters are filled with , pranks, wild jumps you won’t believe from where and situations that the author’s used their imaginations to create as the ending lets us know it’s not over yet and the news is out there in full force to report the final events .
