A simple encounter because of speed dating leaves Oliva Le Clair unsettled and wanting to learn the truth about someone she knows is a deadly killer and then asked to help Harlan Rancourt a descendant of the founders of something called the Foundation a secretive paranormal investigative firm. His grandfather and father ran it more like a criminal organization and he at first wanted no part of it. the story begins as the lab exploded and in the prologue the view along with Harlan this father’s body being carried out in a body bag.

Harlan Rancourt was determined to contact Olivia and did so in a clever yet in a sense tension filled way pretending to be someone who might want a date signing up for speed dating. Just his answer to her question alerted her to either he was a possibility or something else. Anti – social making the encounter even more tense and awkward. The goal is to find the Vortex lab and the hidden information dealing with paranormal phenomena. Oliva owns a crystal cameral that saves her life when a sociopath attempts to killer. Is she as some think an oracle? The camera has special powers allowing her to see images that others cannot. A recorder that sends musical sounds often controls her movements, her actions and she and Harlan learn that at times she hears the voice of her grandmother warning her through sayings that might help lead her to her mother’s killer and the answers they are seeking to find the hidden labs. Vortex lab is where the secret paranormal information  is housed and if in the wrong hands can be deadly. Olivia’s bosses insist she works with Harlan to get his legacy back. He promised that he knows who killed her mother and things get tension filled .. The vortex lab and de the dark forces behind it plus her own supernatural powers change in many strengths and directions. She is shocked  by what she learns and even the paranormal visions, the nightmares she has a suing her powers to read the auras around her cannot stop what someone has put in place. Bluestone the government foundation for stating vortex is the evil behind it all.

Bluestone was not the first project designed to investigate paranormal by the Foundation. There were other groups that took a serious interest but what about Vortex?   Nightmares that trigger the past and seeing shadows in the garage. Olivia sees the speed date killer as if he is there with a roll of duct tape and  syringe on the concrete  The camera she has now ca do it and she realizes she is frozen and trapped. A dream or reality? A recorder would change it all. Imagine a hologram that her grandmother, Grace Goodwin used to paint the picture that Harlan found. she created it from a photograph. Did she take it herself? The camera belonged to her grandmother. Victor Argenbright and Lucas Pine are the ones heading the foundation. The old money is a solid clue they said s well the one-time island inhabited by a religious order. The holograms are paramount. Larissa Whittier as in full control of her paranormal talent. She chose the path of revenge and went too far. “ He who walks the oath of revenge should first dig two graves for himself. Victor  and Lucas are still alive. Who is this person? Meet Jake Spoke, Piper 2 after his father Piper one. evil, wicked and his father had begun the maze  of crypts and bombs and he was going to follow suite. Students that he enlisted to work for him, and a man named Barrow had work as a dream to ten years the permanent generation by what was left of the old vortex lab had transformed the cemetery plants in amazing ways. Imagine  paranormal carnival in a garden that emitted luminous with energy. Advanced students were allowed to practice after dark. The author expands  on Spode, his obsession with the paranormal and tells us about the students and their minimal talents. But he wants Olivia who he thinks is the oracle. As  Gwendolyn Swan reminds us of the potential downside when she put the camera into Olivia’s hands.

As the story unfolds before we learn the outcome we find out about Blake Sefton and his role and Sefton and his connection. Olivia touches her keyboard, grabs her phone, and taps the letters. The words spill out: when the time comes you will know how to go through the mirror. A heavy steel door, a vault and she sense she’s with her mother in the darkness. What happens when they explore Sefton’s house? Light flashed in a mirror on the opposite side of the gallery. Chapter 21 enter at your own risk and witness the explosions , the fires and will they get out? The final chapters will keep you glued to not only the printed page but when Spode kidnaps Olivia you see a side of her that is quite different as she handles his questions, deals with what he thinks he’s going to get, and we learn about the secret serum that is needed to keep him and others alive. What is the hypnotic spell of the recorder and why does he place her in her hands and the recorder before things heat up? Sefton wax the key to finding her mother. He kept track of old friends. She learns about his father and Vortex and the serum and the scientific advances. Aurora Winston was the key and did not blow up the Vortex labs just closed them. Chapter 46 is explosive, and you will come to understand the meaning behind the title. Author Jayne Ann Krentz’s research into the paranormal, paranormal phenomena, oracles and how they use their powers and skills keeps readers wanting more as Olivia, and the Swan sisters take us through the many mirrors, the smoke-filled rooms and pathways, as Olivia hears her mother’s voice: dead man walking in a dying garden. Threats, fires, glass breaking and an ending that leaves you wondering what happens to the Swan sisters who disappeared with valuable logbooks. What about Olivia and Harlan and the Foundation? What started out as revenge for Harlan wanting his inheritance, turns into something that will surprise you as the author reveals why Harlan’s father died and why he hid in plain sight for five years. Where are the members of the Foundation headed next? What about the Swan sisters what is their goal? Although this is the final chapter in this series this reviewer would love one more chapter letting us know what might happen next. Told in many voices and filled with characters that are strong, honest and equally matched in many ways enter her world and learn about the talents of each character and how they blended to understand the meaning of Lightning in the mirror.
