Retirement means different things to different people. Most take time to travel, others part-time work or just deciding on the future. Dez Aloysuis Limerick is a retired mercenary, amateur musicians taking in the California sun. The hotel he’s relaxing in becomes under attack while hoping to enjoy a music gig. Kidnapping takes planning, precision, and timing as a skilled team of kidnappers attempt to kidnap the Chief Legal Counsel of Triton Expeditors, a major military contractor. Petra Alexandris the target is the daughter of the CEO. The best-laid plans well can go awry just when you think you completed your job, have your target but the unexpected happens. Dez aims at all of them and saves the day. But it’s far from over because now that he’s taken down the team the police take him into custody but not for long. Dez now has her full attention and admiration and hires him to help uncover who has embezzled more than a billion dollars in her company. Here is where the author’s title comes into play as Dez is defined as the gatekeeper which means in simple terms: he opens doors and keeps them open but not in the usual way.
Learning the truth about who staged the kidnapping brings in a special meeting that Dez suggested the location and Constantine her father is not pleased. Admiral Gerald Lighthouse is the man in charge and Petra explains that she has been negotiating the financing for the new Vermeer fast attack helicopters and the difficulties involved. The core of his visit tells the group that the attack was a sanctioned military action. All of the five men involved are current military personnel serving different branches of the US armed forces. It gets more intense and the admiral wants Dez in on it all but he needs to deal with something first and that’s telling what he learned at the meeting with the Admiral to Beth Swanson and her captain. The five that are in the yard racists and white supremacists and are men who might or might not be active duty military and racists and attacked the chief counsel to a company that finances the Pentagon. How will Dez proceed and what about the men in custody and why a bar and inciting trouble? Taking some men down he might need to contact Petra to learn about the missing funds totaling one and one-third billion.
When the author shares with readers what Dez uncovers you won’t believe the rationale behind the attack and the reason for the money missing and what it’s intended for. Can they succeed in California and create their state?
As Dez and Petra talk about how to proceed what will happen when they tell her father and who in the company is involved? Why doesn’t her father believe him plus why kidnap her? But for some reason he trusts Dez but what about Vincent?
Then the CFO is told to come home and the next is the chief technical officer. Then there’s a ranch shooting and the right-wing are there and the far-right media is making a cause celebre out of it. If the military base is compromised and her company is out more than a billion dollars and it the threat is to melt down a nuclear reactor and turn Central California into a no-fly zone. She is thought to have been attacked because she was looking into the funding stream behind what was happening up there. Can she choke off the funds?
Events get more involved and dangerous as the author enlightens us as to the real mission that is being carried out and who is involved but will Dez survive the attacks and get to the person in charge? Attacked and questioned and then saved by someone close to the police captain who told him he goes undercover to dig into hate groups and write up reports that the Justice Department uses to put together indictments. Someone used the Triton computers to hide this 1.3 billion. The next scenes are violent and Dez takes on many men, fires, and patriot media trucks are all around the building’s array of satellite communication dishes. There is more as he takes out the one man he’s been hunting and Petra takes a meeting with the Russian ambassador to the United Nations and we learn about another agenda she has but in the end the meeting could be quite lucrative for her.
Two sides and both with different goals as we hear from those allied with the supremacy and the rationale behind it. We hear from those in charge as Dez has waged his war but someone close to the reason he’s fighting so hard is blindsided. You won’t believe who is responsible for taking the money. You won’t believe why and the relationship with our forefathers. Sides are almost evenly matched and members of both teams are deadly but which comes out the victor?
The entire scheme was in the works for 2 years and the Main Directorate of the General staff of the armed forces of the Russian Federation had been hacking into Triton. They jinked the 2016 election and projected seeds of doubt in 2018 and 2020. The chief technical officer, Colin Frye, and their link to general Tancredi and the scheme will blow your mind. Sloatville is the target and taken over by a criminal, anarchist gang of white supremacists not to forget Patriot Media. Meet Captain Weaver, Oliver Lantree, and operation Scram. Flashing back to the murder of an innocent person and dealing with the guy who ran the Joint Base McKinzie -Clark, the action is non-stop and the violence high. The co-conspirators used Tritons Expediter’s money and influence to fund an armed coup. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Read pages 254-256 to learn the shocking rationale behind it.
Author James Bryne creates an ending so intricate, so high octane, and filled with suspense, betrayals and one Chief Legal counsel you don’t want to underestimate as Dez works his magic with the police and Petra used her intuition, convivial and creates a solution you won’t believe. What happens to the Russian and how will it benefit her company? What about the three that were her secure and technical detail? An ending that will make you want more of Dez, his shenanigans, his brazenness, and humor as he decides what’s next. “One who can open any door, keep it open, and controls who goes through…and who doesn’t.” Meet Dez someone you want on your side: The Gatekeeper.
