The Lawless Land

The lawless land

The time period is during medieval times and the Pestilence has killed many as well as taking its toll on the the land and environment. Imagine villages depleted if people and resources and nothing left but corpses and crows reminding you of the devastation and deaths. Most keep to themselves but Gerald  Fox is on a mission to regain his ancestral home that was taken and robbed from him and his family. Hoping to come face to face with the one man that can help him and hopes to petition him to help him. But nothing goes the way he planned when a woman is seen on a horse after her wagon is destroyed, her servants killed and Gerald comes to her aid . A strange alliance cones about as we learn why she escaped from home, the man who she was supposed to marry and learning how unscrupulous and dangerous he is. Knowing Lord Tonbridge the man in question is dangerous and ruthless we also learn what he hopes to achieve by marrying Lady Isabel.

We hear many voices throughout as we meet The Lord and his evil son Bastion who wants nothing more than to help find Lady Isabel but how and what his agenda is and what we learn about him manes you wonder why his own father should not trust him.

A second plot reveals that that many who have turned to the church have paid dearly for positions of power to a powerful Cardinal vying to be the next Pope so why might he get voted down and how will he take aim at any opposition?

Gerald travels to many places and faces obstacles just to escape Lord Tonbridge and his men. Determined to find Lady Isabel he threatens people, learn information from the Sheriff about a husband and wife that came through and the manuscript that she has that holds the key to his power.

Zephyr his horse and a second for Isabel they manage to travel far hoping to get to Paris but first they encounter many roadblocks, thieves, marauders, dangerous clergy, and a sheriff that just wants a peaceful town but a young man who challenges his deputies and threats, are made to the public at large if they dare to say anything or try and stop these killers.

Isabel is guarding a valuable and holy relic and knows that Lord Tonbridge she hopes to use it for his advantage. Locations very, danger increases and Fox realizes that more assassins will stop at nothing to get that ancient relic at all costs but will he succeed at keeping it safe and Isabel too?

Fighting with his brother, losing the document that had the proof of his birth and the link to the Cardinal. Traveling in dangerous times escaping Bastion snd his men as Bastion cons Tonbridge into going after Fox and Isabel himself with his own agenda in mind.

Lord Tonbridge’s past is shared and now he’s asked an audience with cardinal

Molyneux whose only interest in him is obtain the manuscript that Isabel has and he wants . Deciding to go and seek out her cousin he orders his carriage and Tonbridge has his men follow. On the way the Cardinal brags about the stones from his mine and the poor peasants that work there. Arriving Sir Francis wonders about the visit and the Cardinal comes to the point about Isabel . Convinced she’s a traitor and told about the coffret that holds a valuable item and warned not to open it as it as it is carved on the lid with a lady and a unicorn. Plus even helping him does not discount the debt he might still owe if he does not want to forfeit his land. Heartless and cruel and yet thinking Sir Francois  might win the king’s tournament and give the Cardinal the prize as payment for his debt. Mercenary and unfeeling and more. The deal is sealed if he wins but will he?

A plan to rise Bastion hies wrong, he manages to find and capture Isabel, the plan to burn the manuscript or what appears to be it is set in place and then placing her onto a white palfrey with him. Then the authors create a wild scene where Isabel is riding and the mercenaries were charged to protect her but Fox then she fights Bastion and she and the mercenary are plunged into quicksand. Bastion leaves them does not look back and the rest you won’t believe.

Youssef and Henri rode with them but first Youssef explains the book that Fox has, the contents and what he was asked to include and why. Hoping to find out if his brother was at his cousin’s county estate would Henri and Youssef find out because Bastion has not seen them.

Then flashback to what happens yo James and then ahead to hoping to get Isabel and Fox to her cousin’s estate but there are obstacles. Both hate Tonbridge for different reasons but in the end who will win?

Then Fox and Isabel talk about why he got excommunicated and his father’s reputation tarnished and a lifetime of building it taken by Molybeux who was responsible for his mother’s kidnapping, winding up with the Cardinal and having the proof that the got taken away.

Then a surprise twist as we learn the real identity of the woman traveling as Lady Isabel and who realizes the deception and why. How will this change things?

When Isabel and Fox want to leave Francois arrives and tensions and disputes come about as he wants to turn her in to the Cardinal but truths are told and a decision has to be made will be betray family or stay loyal to a corrupt man whose promises are about as honest as a paper clip that is no longer able to fasten or bind papers together.

The opponents are now ready for the tournament and it’s described in all its grandeur with both sides speaking out but which will win after three days and the heartless death of a clergyman only proves what kind of unfeeling person Tonbridge is.

As we witness the tournament we realize that each member has one goal in mind the prize. Each character only cares about the bounty, greed, avarice and status. The characters have no empathy , warmth or feelings for anyone but themselves. In a works that has laws that don’t matter or are adhered to the title fits perfectly. My favorite character is Zephyr who is kind, compassionate and loyal to Fox. This is about power, ownership, status, debts, positions and greed. A church that prides itself on having people in high positions that are corrupt and disloyal to their oaths and the Pope makes you realize that many of the characters mirror people in our world today.

Tournament won but Bastion sought revenge and the death of Henri would serve him well blaming it on Fox who anyone with scruples would know he was more than just a friend. The authors also allow readers to learn the backstory about the Cardinal and how he used bribes and devious methods to take as it states what he feels is his or will be.

The confrontation is happening and the two men state their cases and the final decision is combat between the two guilty parties and the end result will decide their fate. When the Cardinal learns the result and fate of his son it’s hard to tell if he’s truly upset and now Tonbridge will stop at nothing to get Isabel and Fox is fighting for his life.

The Cardinal will not give up and when the parchment and the icon plus the manuscript are in his possession he’s about to learn just how cunning someone is and one small flea just might help his life or is it the Pestilence and will Tonbridge  his quarry? Lives hang in the balance and Isabel hopes to find Abbesses Catherine who’s rightful place is to have the  Hodegetria and keep it safe for the next person. It is an iconographic depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the child Jesus at her side while pointing to him as the source of salvation for mankind.

Finding Abbesses Catherine was step one to giving her the Hodegetriato safety but Tonbridge was relentless and the final scenes are tension filled, surprises and twists as Fox and the enigmatic women who filled each other to many locations will surprise you with an ending that leaves you wondering if authors Boyd and Elizabeth Morrison have more in store for our knight and this valiant women. In a world that is lawless will he find a way to bring good? From the real life experiences of and both authors who traveled the same route through Europe that Both characters did , although not on horseback. Most of the locations in the book are real places that they visited are real places that they visited and researched in person. Canterbury first, Mont-Saint Michel next, Paris, Avignon and La Sacra di San Michele plus the narrative to have a many involved was Beth’s. Learn more after reading this inspirational book of hope, ancestry, pride, loyalty and history of an exciting time period.
