So Very Mental

So Very Mental

Love is a powerful word and has many different definitions. Sometimes we love someone because we are told by our parents that we must love our brothers and sisters. Other times because we love a friend or someone that we meet. Howie and Ben are two brothers that came together because of the loss of both parents which turned out to be a positive thing. Ben is autistic and so special, but his father was abusive and is mother no better. Howie felt it was his obligation to care for him when the past. This is a powerful story of two brothers one who needs to be loved and have a life of his own and the other who wanted to block it but what happens will endear you to Ben. Meet Chapstick who is Howie’s lifelong friend and join them for games, baseball, football, broken relationships, and more.

Ben goes out with 2 dated but the third Robyn seems great. Both have locked-in schedules. Hers created by her mother and his Howie. Music, movies and board games and more in common while Howie and Chapstick talk about their differences and similarities in many areas. You can tell Howie is more about himself and makes a serious era concerning Robyn that could change it all. Losing her hurt Ben but he forgave his brother.

As the story continues you realize that Howie is self-centered, and self-absorbed and when Chapstick tells him he’s invited to his ex’s wedding he flips out and their friendship takes a different turn. Why should his friend not go to the wedding and why is it always about him? Then a discussion on the train with a passenger gets tense and the author helps readers understand autism and the spectrum.

The author flashes back to Ben’s history and how he deals and dealt with being autistic and how people viewed him including his parents. Howie meets Rita on a blind date, and it seems at first to go great but when the evening turns to a different route what happens changes it all.

Chapstick and Howie and Pontiac have their mindset on music, the world, movies and more.

Ben lived under tight and abusive conditions and was often stopped from expressing himself and screaming to be heard. Read pages 110-111 to understand autism more. The moment the world stopped pushing Ben he changed and began to enjoy people.

Marsha at the center asked if he’s doing this Thai us takin care of Ben as self dependency and he answered that he enjoys being with Ben and wants to live with him but what he does next you the reader will have to create your own moral and ethical judgment of Howie. What happens when he flashes back to what happened with Robyn? Why is that paramount in his mind and what he does next might turn you against him . Taking his brother’s identity and pretending to be autistic to meet someone who is autistic is that right and is it for the right reason? He fooled the interviewer, and he got a date with a girl named Rosalind and agreed to meet her parents would he fool them and what if the truth comes out?

Meeting her parents at a high-priced restaurant and passing the test and getting a date with Rosalind. He liked her and had to adjust his thinking and answers to questions as he learned about her tastes in foods, music and piano. She was told to play for him, and the evening went well but would there be more? What about the real Ben?

The scenes with Rosalind are compelling as the author allows readers to understand her autism and how Howie/Ben deals with his own way of dealing with his deception. But he really likes her, and the author does let us know what mannerisms Rosalind that Howie has might not understand or like and Ben does not know why at first that his schedule is changed and then Chapstick and the others come into play with music and more.

The final reveal with shock you as the author creates a way for the hidden truths to come out. What happens when Rosalind learns that Howie is not Ben? How does Howie react to Ben and Rosalind and the wedding scene is priceless and just maybe Howie Will realize that self-absorbed and try looking at the world through his own eyes. What music does he like Abe what song will be played the wedding find out when you read So Very Mental with its multiple meanings. Howie will he ever understand himself and find his true him? Will Ben break away on his own and where will they go next?

Professionally researched and well portrayed of the characters that are on the spectrum. Author C.C.Howard hits the mark and go Arsenal! Autistic people are special and have their own way of communicating. This review is dedicated to my nephew CW who proves each and every day that he is smart, handles school and can do anything if he tries.
