Creating your present you might hide your past. Remembering what you endured might bring back incidents you’d rather have buried. When Shay reads an article that tells about the death of her college friend,Laurel, it sends her on a quest to find out why and how she really died. Memories can be precious but what she reveals in both the past and present will shock you as three young girls become victims of a man so sick , diabolical and controlling even using mind control to have them submit to his will and tortured. Three friends and one sort of an outsider who blinds the others when introducing them to her father and the cult he created. As Shay tells the story while her best friend Jamie records it as she is on a quest to learn the hidden truths and lies about her past. Living under a different name and hoping her past stays there we learn how the three Frits away from the cult but Shay relives it in the present as she remembers the past and even recreates it in the present. Each podcast taped reveals another journey into proving her self worth and hoping that each man or boy finds her what they want. In the past we meet Don who lures her and her two friends into his lair and inside the Pators who requires submission and punishments in order to repent her wrong doings. The scenes are graphic and the punishments painful and horrific yet all three justify that they deserve it.
In the present she enters a club that requires she submit to someone called the lieutenant and the scenes are right out of a horror movie and are sadistic.
Jamie and Shay share intimate moments as Cal cuts her off because she will not come home. Plus there are missing girls and she returns to take aim at Don who seduced her and her 2 friends with his actions and brainwashing. Shay becomes embroiled in the dark side and often goes back for more. Will she finally untangle herself before it’s too late?
Vengeance is her goal but when she reflects on her actions, dates that went in the wrong direction, crimes she committed and the fact she got away with a lot, Shay never accepted herself for herself. Looking for acceptance and approval from teachers, her mother who was never there for her and her friends. The revelations she and Jamie reveal defines their friendship in many different ways and how each one sees it in the past and in the present. Jamie is with her after making a plea got public help to learn the truth about Laurel’s death. Regrets, determination and guilt line this plot and sone of the scenes are hard to imagine and at times you wonder why Shay fell into so many traps set by others. Wanting to rebel against the norm and yet wanted to do what’s right you wonder where she’ll wind up but after dealing with Don and now with the club she frequents you wonder if she will ever define Shay as Shay. All three plus Nicole in the present fall prey to those men making them feel unworthy , deserving of the punishments and taking aim at the vulnerable.
Lies, betrayals, deceptions, sadistic people, overpowering incidents and two people Shay and Jamie trying to make so many wrongs right but is it possible ?
The ultimate shocking revelation stunned Shay as she’s blindsided and manipulated but why bathe ultimate betrayal? A powerful ending as Shay faces off with Don, the Paters are done,government officials charged, university president involved and the missing women speak out. But what is Shay’s fate? What is her story? Will she get public support? Read her words, relive her past and decide on her present. The author takes us down many paths that are tangled and interwoven as Shay faces one last challenge and revelation that will haunt her and readers.
