Cops Lie: COPS LIE: Leonard Love Matlick Police officers have taken an oath to protect the public. Some focus on following the rules and making sure that their arrests are clean and that they stick to the rules while others do everything in their power to exert their authority at times on innocent victims. Some officers often steal drugs and money and can be seen as we view on many police shows, beating their suspects called skels, aka vagrants, or homeless people that they feel will help them when adding to their arrest records for any single month. NYPD Officer Charles Griffin was a dirty cop. Before he could be accused or arrested he was in an accident with one other cop and two in critical condition. But, when Detective Tony Philadelphia, a homicide detective out of the 9th precinct is given the case to investigate what really happened what he learns will uncover corruption to the highest level of power in the force. The corruption is indicative of what we see everyday in the news and what he and his partner encounter just might endanger their lives and more. Emotionless, uncaring, angry and no remorse these dirty cops not only live as you will learn first hand high on the hog making sure that their family’s are well provided with all the luxuries in life and that their manner or mode of getting overtime, extra pay and selling drugs and stealing from victims is just the tip of the very sad and corrupt iceberg. Tony might be hunting for answers but he is seriously not that innocent and if what was being down was just bribes, or free meals to cops or simple head bashing maybe he would back off. His mind whenever he’s in a bar or near someone hot and his type goes straight to his own gutter and he’s urges get handled. Every time Longo and Philadelphia deal with IAD or any of the upper brass you catch an undertone of deceit as they send off their findings to Organized Crimes, FBI and other law enforcement agencies letting you know that they want the collar for the drugs, money laundering and criminal offenses not yet solved. The coffin cops as these cops are called work out of an old coffin factory and claiming they will put a bug there to monitor their meetings and their transactions there does not mean that anything will be done about so many dirty cops. When Tony sees one cop beating a girl after stopping her for a traffic ticket and claiming she was resisting arrest you begin to wonder just how many other cops are using brute force and lie about what the skel or suspect has done just to get the collar on their record. Ratting out another officer is sure death in some ways but when the mob gets involved Tony uses someone from the past whose family is connected to try and get some credible information from her in the only way he knows how and you can figure that out for yourself. Added in he meets with many other women and seems to have quite a bit of fun in his spare time and during his investigations. The vernacular or language seems credible as it matches what you often hear on the streets when cops talk or on many crime shows. The author shares how forms are filled out, what different forms are used for and how cases are handled when someone is arrested he explains the procedures but no one questions the methods of arrests. With the help of another Detective named Granite both Longo and Philadelphia split up all the possible banks where Griffin might have his safety deposit box but it takes a long time but someone finally calls them and what they find is just the tip of the iceberg. Surveillance on the coffin cops, pictures taken, videos and the events logged and recorded they learn about the dirty cops, their link to the mob as Tony gets in deeper and deeper with Barbara the Mafia Princess who is relentless when it comes to him. Rossi one of the detectives is working with Frankie the guy in charge of the mob and deals with taking down drug lords, demanding they pay protection to learn about raids in advance and each party taking a huge chunk of the pie. When Tony agrees to become a shill for the mob giving them what they want he gets the list of dirty cops in return but what else does he get? As you read about each incident of innocent victims arrested, one woman coming from a child’s party and is arrested when she tells the cops the car in question is not hers, she is punched in the face and then arrested for resisting arrest and back talking a cop, you begin to become leery about even asking them for help or directions. Tony might be considered a good cop but his lower half and his mind are definitely predisposed to his own enjoyment and you wonder just how honest he really is as a cop when he and Longo walk away from what is right in front of them. Barbara, Angela, Claire three women one man who can’t keep it locked up and the end result well you have to read it for yourself. The author shares information about the 9th precinct called Alphabet City based on the names of the streets ABC. It was always a bad area and now at every single street corner there is one of the worst spots in the City for Synthetic marijuana, with users lighting up in broad daylight and passing out on the sidewalks or in traffic. K2 is the street name and is illegal as is real MJ, but people in the areas of Avenue A and East 5th Street find it’s the best place to score K2. Tony and Ed Longo looked around them and saw at least 50 people lighting up and you can tell they are high, not aware of anything and it would definitely not go past any teenager to try it out. Barbara Marino only wants Tony to be the father of her twins and marry her. On pages 196-198 you will learn just how unsolved murders and the evidence are put in a database along with the autopsy reports and the shell fragments from the guns that killed the victim. All they have to do when the gun is found examine the gun by firing it and seeing if the fragments match those of the victim’s. On page 199 you will be enlightened to Griffin’s bookkeeping and how he kept records on the cops whose names were listed, escorts and much more. Tony is supposed to aid with information knowing that a member of the Demarco family namely Demarco is their next hit. The author shares the chain of command or the timeline of how hits are enacted and what happens to the hit man or hit men if they fail. Arrests, summons, traffic stops and much are needed in certain amounts each month or the detective or officer will be demoted to traffic or foot duty. When Tony and Longo approach officers that are committing crimes such as planting drugs, beating skel or suspect it bothers this reviewer that they interfere to a point but leave it to the corrupt officers to write the report and bring the person in to the station. But, no one ever questions the cops and no one according to the blue wall rats them out. A very graphic, telling and definitely disturbing novel that brings to light the inner most workings of the police department right here in New York City and you wonder just how much of what he wrote is fact and what if any is fiction. Tony Philadelphia and Ed Longo what’s next for them and are they representative of all cops? Fran Lewis: Just reviews/MJ magazine
