Shadow Crimes: E.J. Moran

Shadow Crimes: E.J. Moran

Behind the scenes of many modeling jobs are people that prey on young men and women in order to get them to adhere to what they want and because they have the delusional idea of becoming world famous. Anna McKenna witnesses the death of the mother after she’s victim to someone hitting her in a truck. Anna’s mother is pregnant with a child and the paramedics and doctors cannot save her mother but they do Joey her little brother. Grief stricken her father takes to the bottle and she loses both parents but is lucky to have her grandparents watch over her. Anna now grown-up works with her grandparents each day helping them sell produce. But, someone would come along and buy some peaches and decides on the spot that she would be perfect for her agency. Natasha Burns falls head over heels with Anna’s look and hoped along with her cousin Joy Ellen to convince not only Anna but also her grandparents to give her permission to work Top Form Management. Surprised and yet taken in almost immediately Anna hopes that her grandparents will agree and allow her to make money to not only help them but also pay for the needed surgeries to help her brother and for tutors that Joey needs. Like all young girls that are not worldly and quite naïve Anna thinks this will be the greatest opportunity of her life but there’s a secret that Natasha as yet to reveal and won’t until it’s too late.

Rhonda was home and hoping to rest when her doorbell rings. Letting in this unknown person who approaches her with the line that she wants to be a famous model and he can help her little did she know that she would be taking her last breath but not before she’s brutally attacked. Things spiral out of control and the killer is not found and now Anna will become part of Natasha’s group meeting Anika, Petra and many others whom she befriends. Anna is sweet and the girls try to teach her the ropes but she is often blindsided by her own wants, wills and never realizes that there are people that are trying to use her.

Uncle Mickey is a Detective in the Port Chester Police Department and his parents are the ones taking care of Anna and her brother. Not thrilled with the fact that she would be a model and hesitant to allow his parents to allow her to move into Natasha’s mansion, he becomes her advocate, protector and even date for a special party that is planned. Detective Tansey is the lead on Rhonda’s case and questions several suspects who look good for the murder but one who calls himself by the last name Dunbar making young girls think that he is the son of someone famous.

Not everyone is who he or she appears to be and not everyone should be trusted. Although Natasha cares for the girls but her prime concern is her agency and often their safety comes up in passing especially when some decide to move into their own apartments and fail to check if there is security or a doorman.
Anna loves the auditions and loves the life but meeting several photographers she senses that one or two might not be the right fit for her to post for.

Anna becomes their prime commodity and in dire demand. When Petra meets her uncle she hopes that she will reconnect with him at the party given by Natasha. But, he’s not interested and his concern is his niece. But Petra attends, gets drunk and Anna and her uncle put in a cab but what happened to her wallet?

Petra falls prey to the same killer when he arrives at her door with her bag and wallet. Not realizing that this person had more on his mind she allows him into her apartment and so grateful that he returns her things does not realize that she too will never become famous except in the news as the next victim.

Anna learns of her death and her Uncle becomes more concerned for her but why is he called to the station along with Anna and treated like a suspect? Things take on another turn as she is given an assignment in Milan for a Franco someone that she seems to like and admire. Richie is abusive and allows himself the luxury of being inappropriate with the models and Anna does not want any part of him but an audition is an audition and sometimes she does not realize that she’s in danger.

This killer is delusional and there is someone hiding in plain sight that might just fool the police and readers too as we hear another voice and learn more about someone that feels cheated and unwanted. The time period is the late 70’s and the fashion industry is coming more alive as fashion week is about to begin in Milan. Beautiful and naïve Anna begins after a while to realize that there are underhanded and unscrupulous people who love to convince the unknowing that they can make them famous. Uncle Mickey is smart and realizes after the second murder puts evidence together leading him to believe he knows who the rapist and killer might be. After the Studio 54 party that he attended with Anna, he realizes that someone wants to take out more of Natasha’s models but who’ next? Why Burn’s agency? Anna meets Richie a movie producer who grabs her at Bloomingdales, or the male model named Paul that she befriends or someone else? Models are worth not much when they become expendable but someone wants Burn’s models and her agency gone. Milan is where it might happen but can he convince Lansey to contact the police over there and will they help him catch a killer? The ending is right out of a Jessica Fletcher or Law and Order Episode where the killer is revealed but the ending is not quite what you expect and the final reveal will leave you wondering just what author E.J. Moran still has in store for the models in the agency and for Anna.

Characters that fit their roles and an Uncle who is relentless when he realizes that Anna is the target of a killer but will he arrive there in time or will his efforts fail? The killer lurks but there might be more SHADOW CRIMES in the future.
