Dead Cereus

Dead Cereus: Kira Seamon

An interesting change from the usual murder mysteries as this once primary focus is horticulture and rare plants. An event or Gala featuring the rare night blooming cereus plant is scheduled to open it petals at this Gala at Shellesby College’s Night Lights Gala. Holly Jackson is the main character and hopes yo get a scholarship for an internship but she’s at times a disaster and she accidentally drenched the most distinguished donors and her relationship with William a rock star and more in this field might be in danger. To not be eliminated from this college she has to win the internship but the issue at hand is Ivy Berkeley her competition whose family influential and who does not need the s hoots remain in the school. Plus she has sights on William , Holly’s boyfriend. It gets more complicated as she is told to go to the greenhouse which is one of five greenhouses to lock it up close to midnight. William has valuable plants there and she needed to make sure they were safe and would not go missing. The plant in question grows in deserts. Added in the author focuses on William and is discoveries in grafting techniques as a teen. Ogletree and Dudley are at odds but both present their accomplishments at thus gala but one would not expect the reception of protesters who reveal more about the working conditions at his chocolate factory and we also learn about the grafting techniques and overhear conversations between these two that get heated.

When Holly loses the scholarship rather than take it like an adult she pulls a prank on Ivy that could have killed her, made her fall asleep and the rest and the reaction to this unusual tea you won’t believe. Ivy’s reaction was nothing compared to her father’s but it gets worse. As Holly seems to always be in the thick of trouble when she overhears Dudley and Ogletree arguing and Dudley screaming about their partnership, the grant, the grafting and then stating it was a team project that won them the grant to explore the Amazon and while Ogletree was busy doing soil sampling or using neutron moisture meter, the other was developing the grafting techniques. Professor Ogletree then expounded on the fact Dudley had no part in his discovery. What did he do with the grant money? But even goodwill did not stop Dudley from listing all he lost and more. Insults hurled on both sides and Ogletree knew he was set up by Dudley and you won’t believe the result. Read pages 114-117 and experience it. But just where does Holly fit in this time? She seems to never be on the side of right. Let’s not forget the donors that are at this gala too. But when Ivy returned from the hospital what happens you won’t believe and her reaction to Holly who spiked her tea will leave everyone wanting to know more about the herbs and someone wanting to know more about them. What happens when Ivy wants an interview about her ordeal?

But Dudley and Ogletree have more to say but Dudley takes a cannonball fruit and aims it at Ogletree and the result is dead or alive? Murder she saw! What is her next move and once again she puts William in a tenuous situation and will he cover for her? She watches him drag the body and the main event people were supposed to see The huge corpse flower woke up from its huge slumber. Where will he put the body and what is Holly going to do now?

As Ivy and Holly have an unusual encounter we also learn the punishment given to her by Berkeley which will put her academic standing lower and her need to buckle down and hopefully grow up and skip the hijinks.

Why does Holly tell Ivy about the murder? Why does she want to find the killer? What about what William will say?

An odd friendship between Ivy and Holly and yet in some ways alike. But when Ivy is kidnapped and a ransom is asked, why does Holly decide to save her? Why not notify the police.

Revenge, identity, self-worth, self-esteem, redemption, reconciliation, and learning who she really is and yet has a long way to go, author Kira Seamon created flawed characters, each working for their form of recognition, each dealing with hope, survival, and egos as the truth behind the murder comes to light as Holly tries to safe Ivy and enlists the help of Heather and William but you wonder if she’s ever going to get her head on straight. Holly seems drawn to destructive behavior when she gives the tea to Ivy, when she does not follow the rules set out by Berkeley and often goes in directions that create havoc for others as she’s determined to find Ivy, convinces William not to call the police as a dangerous killer is out there and will she be next?

Events escalated as Holly takes it upon herself after getting a map in the library to try and find Ivy and save her. The scenes are right out of a suspense movie with humor. The scene with her and Ivy at the end is priceless and a point of redemption heartwarming. An ending that is a new start and there is much more in her future. The author added in recipes, history, and meanings of names and acknowledgments . The powerful of flowers, herbs and plants and a special plant called the Cereus.
